Dear Parents / Caregivers
As we fast approach the middle of the term the school is going very well. The children have had a great start to the year, they are fully involved in the life of the school and the tone is excellent. The staff are continually commenting on the children's positive attitudes to their work.

Welcome to our new students Harrison Boswell, Cameron Catchpole, Presley Williams.

Despite the incredible value of the swim programmes they do take a chunk out of the school day. Swimming finishes at the end of next week and then classes will be able to really hit their straps for the last  few weeks of term.

At Muritai we value the contribution our children make to our school. We need our children to actively contribute to our environment, not just passively receive from it. Every day we appreciate the little things that many of our children do to make this place special. Along with focusing on their studies this can be as simple an action as being a friend to someone who is on their own, smiling and greeting a teacher, letting people pass, allowing others to be in a game, respecting rules or doing one of our required jobs such as road patrol, librarian or peer mediation. Many children show leadership and maturity from an early age and they tend to display a greater understanding of others beyond themselves. As adults it is easy to miss the efforts of our young ones when they think or care for others we must always remember to recognize their efforts  as we aim to develop an excellent sense of what is 'business as usual' - or our school culture.
The senior staff have enjoyed the challenging task of identifying our student leadership team this year (and have reflected over time of our oldest children) and their contribution, service and maturity in recent years. Accordingly we have pleasure in announcing Celine Malama and Tom Walsh as our head girl and boy this year and they will be supported by Kia Jewell and Gus Reece as Deputy Head Boy and GirlAll these children have a long history of making a strong contribution and providing mature leadership at Muritai, are well respected by staff and their peers and they will do well in this role.

Celine, Tom, Kia and Gus are also part of the school council comprising of Gabby Turner, Harry Crawford and Oscar Sykes.

We have some amazingly talented individuals who are continually promoting and displaying leadership qualities.  Everyone has the potential to be a leader, whether they are leading by example, role modeling, are sports captains, working in the main school, providing encouragement or by being given the opportunity to take on any role of responsibility on request.  Leadership doesn’t always come with a title.

The prestigious house captains role this year are: King – Hailey Griffiths and Xavier Manson
Charters – Rupert McRae and Caela Davy
Sanson – Celine Malama and Moss Grenfell
Cook – Xanthe Winfield and David Balayan

SPORTS NEWS

ATHLETICS
On Friday Mr McKay took a Muritai team to be part of the year 6 fastest school relay event as part of the St Pats Silverstream track meet. The relay involved 5 students (3 boys and 2 girls) each running separate distances e.g. 800m, 400m, 200m, and 2 x 100m. The enjoyable and challenging event saw Muritai come in in 2nd place, just behind the winners Silverstream School. Well done our team of Jack, Macey, Liam, Georgia and Robbie.

Dear Parents / Caregivers
We have had an excellent start to the year. The children have settled extremely well into their classes and are very busy already. Finished work is already making its way onto the walls as teachers and children aim to put some 'life' into their classrooms.

The month of February at school is very much focussed on getting systems operational in a classroom and building that class culture. Each year classes are shuffled around to allow different working relationships to form and with a new teacher there is always a 'bedding' in period where everyone needs to get used to each other. Classes explore treaties (just like our Treaty of Waitangi) that set expectations, to enable everyone to do their very best and sets a productive and safe learning and social environment.

At assembly on Friday we spoke about that key value of respecting others, in particular thinking about how we conduct ourselves around others. In particular we talked about greeting, smiling, kind hands, opening doors for adults and a good friend to others and looking after property.

Classes though have settled quickly and are well into the business of learning.

Congratulations to...
Maya Hahn who won the NZ 10 year old 800m title at the Colgate Games in Tauranga in the holidays. An outstanding achievement.

We welcome...

Pearl Tuohy to our school in room 8.  Pearl is a Muritai School old girl and is currently doing her teacher training. Pearl is here for the next 2 weeks.

Our new students since the beginning of term -Eva Medcalf and Isabella Carroll to Room 2 and Clara Archibald to Room 3.

MATHLETICS
As part of our self review processes we are keen to boost the number knowledge of our children. We have identified the Mathletics programme as an excellent support programme for developing number knowledge. We have negotiated an excellent schoolwide deal for 3 years with Mathletics and will be operating this as part of our school programme this year. A normal licence costs $99 but our deal has the cost per child is $20 per year. This will be invoiced to parents with school donation and the activity fee. It is excellent value and equates to just under 40cents a week to have access. Some families have already signed up with Mathletics and they can liaise with 3P at customerservice@3plearning.co.nz around their circumstances.
You can view the Mathletics website here.

HOMEWORK
Muritai School does set homework, mainly around the core skills of reading, spelling and maths. We are very aware that Eastbourne families lead very busy lives and so we are very flexible, and we are so grateful that even with this busyness our children still read every night. With Mathletics in place that leaves spelling and reading. From time to time year 5-8 children will have  additional work set around completing in class assignments or inquiry. This is usually based around the need for extra time required to complete studies in depth and to produce higher quality work.

FACEBOOK
With many parents now on Facebook we are able to share information and school event news via Facebook. You can sign up to Muritai School's facebook page and therefore get regular updates of events.  Clicking here to join
Facebook is not accessible at school.

TEACHERS MEET THE PARENTS
In 2010, we switched the ‘Meet the Teacher’ to a ‘Meet the Parent’ session. The intent of this was to allow parents to share openly everything about their child that might be useful for teachers to know, especially at a time when teachers are getting to know who is in front of them, their interests and their short to mid term learning needs. So, teachers were listening (not doing all the talking.)

Every teacher is determined to get to know each child and you as parents as quickly as we possibly can. We are fully aware that much of this information can be gained directly from the child, but sometimes parents have a different ‘spin’ on it or additional important information. Our next formal contact is at the mid year when we issue learning journeys, written reports and meet to discuss progress.

Parents are most welcome to meet with teachers at any time to discuss progress. Please feel comfortable to do this as we see the home-school partnership as essential for children reaching their potential.

AFTER SCHOOL CARE
We have changed the financial structure around after school care. MASC is not operating before school care this year and is just focusing on after school care and holiday programmes.

Changes see that fees for permanent enrolments must be paid either in full before the children commence the term or by instalments one week in advance. If you would like to use after school care on a casual basis then you can purchase a 5-visit or 10-visit ticket at the school office. After you have purchased a ticket it will be held by the MASC manager, Mel Dowdall, and ticked off as children attend.  Children must be enrolled on a casual basis through Mel a week in advance.

Our year 3-4  children are to be part of a football coaching programme starting today run by the Kiwisport team from the Lower Hutt Football club. This goes for 8 weeks this term.

Tena koutou katoa

Dear Parents / Caregivers

Welcome to everyone who will be associated with the school for 2012. A special welcome to new children and families joining the Muritai family for the first time The school will open on Tuesday with a roll of 400. It is anticipated that the roll will climb to 440 by the end of the year as new entrants join the school throughout the year.

At Muritai we have a history of promoting a happy environment where our values promote quality citizenship, achievement, responsibility and effort. We have high expectations and academic standards through the delivery of quality teaching and learning programmes. Across the year the children will experience a wide range of extra curricula, arts and sporting opportunities, and they will be challenged in a variety of learning experiences. We promote the realization of individual potential through our core vision  “to enable children to be the best that they can be”.

Over the next few weeks, parents will be given opportunities to involve themselves in the school’s activities. The term diary at the bottom of the newsletter lists the important activities to be held throughout the term. For example, next Friday the 13th of February, the school invites the community to a family picnic commencing at 5.00pm. This event provides a chance to catch up with the school community in a relaxing, fun environment. Bring all the family as well as your picnic and a rug.

We have a powhiri at 10.00 on Tuesday 7th to welcome new staff and children to Muritai School. All parents invited to attend.

Term dates for 2012

Term 1 – Tuesday 7 February to Thursday 5 April
Term 2 – Monday 23 April  to Friday 29 June
Term 3 – Monday 16 July to Friday 28 September
Term 4 – Monday 15 October to Thursday 20 December

During 2012 parents will receive regular newsletters outlining the happenings in the school, listing the important events that are coming up and celebrating the successes of the children. Newsletters are e-mailed to parents every two weeks on a Wednesday (except for short weeks). Please be sure we have your up-dated e-mail address. Some people prefer a paper copy - just let Sue in the office know if you would like a paper version.

The school’s website www.muritai.school.nz also provides access to the newsletters and other items of interest. Teachers, through their class blogs, use the website to share the activities of the classrooms and school-wide events. Please note the website is the school’s main communication line to the community and we urge all parents to be regular visitors to it to gain the important information about the events of the school.

We look forward to welcoming your children back to school on Tuesday and see their happiness and enthusiasm for their school in action.

Replacing Karen in room 5 is Rebecca Saker who joins Muritai after 5 years teaching at Belmont School.

MAKING IT HAPPEN
This year the whole school theme is focusing on an overall concept of "making it happen"'. As it is Olympic year we wanted to focus on the spirit of hard work and commitment to reflect those athletes training to "be the best that they can be" at the London Olympics in 2012. Class work will, at times, reflect back into the concept of how we can make things happen, how we have to work hard to improve and achieve, how we can get things done, and by hard work and effort we can really make a difference.  This fits nicely in with the curriculum – technology, health, science and social studies and, specifically our attitudes in living the key competencies of the NZ curriculum.

MEET THE TEACHER
There we will be a meet the teacher next Thursday 9th starting at 2.00 running through to 8.00. School will finish early at 1.50 to enable interviews to start at 2.00.  We can accommodate children until the normal end of school time if the early finish is an inconvenience to your family.

This is a chance for parents to share information about their child with the new class teacher. Parent/teacher partnerships are vital for the success of our children so we do invite parents, to come and share their goals for 2012 with their class teacher.

Click on www.schoolinterviews.co.nz  and enter the code BDVR3 to make an appointment.  Alternatively, contact Sue or Carole in the office.

It is important that parents know they are able to meet formally with teachers to discuss children’s progress or other issues at any stage throughout the year but please contact the teacher first.

Our school lunch system is on Monday and Friday. Please place the order in the box provided. These start next Friday.  A menu/price list is on the website.
