Naumai e te whanau o te kura Muritai
Tena koutou katoa

The time is right for our mid year holidays. Children and staff have put in a very big effort over the last term and there is not much left in the tank.

Thank you so much for being part of the parent interviews. I strongly believe that face to face contact is the best way for parents to be kept informed of student progress. We were very pleased to see so many parents attending. Teachers certainly were very positive at dinner last night and thought the interviews were going extremely well and parents were receptive to their ideas. At the beginning of term 3 we will establish a new goal setting process for the students and their teachers to work towards and achieve. We encourage you all to stay in close touch with your child's teacher as we go forward.

STAFFING
Next term we are starting a new entrant class in room 16. We welcome back Jess Savage to Muritai.  She starts the term with 7 children which will grow quickly to 16 by the end of the term. We also welcome back Hayley Skilton at the end of week 3 when Sheena Naik goes on maternity leave.

We also say goodbye to Paula, our Speech language therapist who has been doing booster sessions at Muritai this term and to Louise Hannigan, our long-time group Special Education Liaison rep, who works with us with our highest needs children. Both people have been wonderful connections for Muritai and we will miss them.

NEW STUDENT
Next term we have a new student starting at Muritai who is visually impaired. Shannon is a delightful year 6 student who is going into room 11 with Murray McMillan. Shannon can do all the things that the other children can do, although she needs a cane to help her get around the school. We are all looking forward to her arrival.

SCIENCE FAIR
I hope you enjoyed the opportunity to see the year 7-8 science fair while it was in the library and room 22. The displays were very impressive and the culmination of some very good work by our oldest students. Congratulations to our winners Carlotta Fegert (Y8 - 'What is the best way to make cut flowers last longer') and Frankie Middleton (Y7 - 'Dust mites').  Results:
  • Year 8 - 1st - Carlotta Fergert; 2nd - Jack Wellwood; 3rd - Finn Connell
  • Year 7 - 1st - Frankie Middleton; 2nd - Amy Flynn; 3rd - Dorrie Brennan, Margarita Montes de Oca
BASKETBALL
Our year 8 team, the "Muritai Monsters" have performed with distinction in the very competitive Hutt Valley league.  They made the final and went down 32-30 to Naenae Intermediate in a very hotly contested game of basketball on Wednesday night. Well done boys!

CROSS COUNTRY INTER-ZONE RESULTS
After lots of postponements our top runners had the chance to test their skills in the Wellington regional cross country event held yesterday. Well done to all our athletes who continued training hard for this challenge - we are very proud of your success. Four of our athletes made the top 6 so congratulations to:
  • Gus Reece  - 6th year 8 boys
  • Maya Hahn  - 3rd year 7 girls
  • Macey Caughley  - 3rd year 5 girls
  • Charlotte Humphries  - 4th year 4 girls
ASB 'OLYMPIC' FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT
Two teams from year 5/6 represented Muritai at the ASB football 'Olympic' festival. Both the boy's team (representing Spain), and the girl's team (representing USA) went through the festival unbeaten.

SCHOOL DISCO
The kids had a fantastic time last Friday night at the "Reports are out, one more week to go disco". Thank you to our Home and School team for running the event, a fun time was had by all.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
Thank you for supporting our book fair. Through the sale of the books we have managed to acquire over a $1000 of books for our school library. A big thanks to Jo Salisbury and her team of helpers for their work on Wednesday and Thursday evening.

VOLUNTEERS AT SCHOOL
We have lots of the Muritai family in the school at the moment helping teachers and children and we want to say thank you so much to our volunteers for spending some of your precious time with our children. People are in the school doing hooked on books, sorting and repairing resources, attending to sports uniforms or working with children in classrooms. It is a huge help and really makes a difference.

WORLD VISION
Once again our children have excelled themselves over 'the 40 hour famine' weekend and have raised $2709.40 for the children of Mali. Children do a lot of thinking about other people and their way of living when they involve themselves in something like this so it is a very worthwhile activity. Well done Muritai!

PARK AND CROSS SAFELY TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN
Parking wardens will be visiting Muritai School shortly to keep the area around our entrance safe for everyone getting to and from school.

Double parking or stopping on broken yellow lines can make it difficult for the road patrol to see approaching vehicles, and for other drivers to see children crossing.

For the safety of your child and their friends;
  • Slow down around our school
  • Always observe all parking restrictions near our school
  • Always cross at the patrolled crossing
  • Walk to school, or be prepared to park a short distance away and walk. This will reduce traffic congestion.
Our new Police Constable, Dave Tweedale, has also asked that we remind parents to use the crossing and set a good example for the children.  If you are crossing between the diamonds on the road, please use the crossing.

FACEBOOK AND TWITTER
With many parents now on Facebook we are able to share information and school news events via Facebook. Presently we have about 90 'friends' which is made up of just 40 current school families.

You can sign up to Muritai School's Facebook page and therefore get regular updates of events.  Click here to join up on Facebook.

Alternatively, if you are not on Facebook you can also receive these updates straight to your cellphone via Twitter. Simply text 8987 and type in follow MuritaiSchool and you will receive updates, simple messages, reminders, cancellations direct to your cellphone.

Welcome to our new students, Damon Edwards and Hollie Ridley-Gibbons to Room 2.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT REPORTING
We are just putting the finishing touches to our reporting to parents. On Friday written reports and student learning journeys will be issued. The learning journeys provide evidence of the children’s achievement.

This written report places your child’s achievement against a 5 point scale ranging from well below to well above against the expected year levels of the NZ curriculum. Rather than just focussing on reading, writing and maths we aim to cover all areas of the curriculum, including work and study skills and the key competencies.

Next week we have parent interviews. We will be using the Learning Journeys and other work samples to guide the parent interview and relate and explain your child’s progress towards meeting the year level national standards. It is important to note that at this mid-year stage these are a prediction as to  how students are tracking against the national standard (which is an end of year judgment).

We see the learning journey as being a very important part of reporting for the children. It gives them a chance to share their achievements with you and it gives them a chance to reflect on their own growth together with the teachers and their peers.  The language used to put the journeys together helps them self-review their own progress and achievement.

The key thing however is to continue those ongoing conversations about your child's strengths and weaknesses and understand future learning goals for the next phase of learning. You will then be able to take the portfolio home, hopefully with greater meaning and allow your child to then share their quality work with you.

So in summary our triangle of reporting is as follows –

  • Written report – a visual representation of your child’s achievement against the NZ curriculum objectives at their year level.
  • Learning Journey – a sample of student work put together by the children and their class teacher to reflect their learning journey so far this year.
  • Parent interview – using samples of work this is a discussion, with samples, of a student’s strengths and next learning steps. This will involve informing you how your child is tracking against the national standard in reading, writing and maths.

This method of informing parents with up to the minute notices has been invaluable to schools and parents in Christchurch.  In the event of a major earthquake or other natural disaster, most schools would lose power and would be unable to contact parents.  However, using a smartphone, schools are able to update Facebook at any time and alerts are sent out automatically.

SCHOOL DISCO
The School disco is tomorrow, Friday 22 June with times as follows:-
Year 1 - 3      5 to 6
Year 4 - 6      6.15 to 7.45
Year 7 - 8      8 to 9.30

SPORTS STACKING CHAMPIONSHIPS
On Saturday 21 July the first ever Wellington Open Sports Stacking Championships will be held in the Memorial Hall in Wainuiomata.  We will have several students competing for age group titles.  Tournament begins at 10am through to 5pm.  Anyone who would like to support our students and see the sport in action, there is a gold coin entry fee.  The students would love to see you there.

READING EGGS
Some classes in the Junior School have been trialling the ReadingEggs programme and have found it very worthwhile. The children have certainly been enjoying the interactive animations, fun games, songs and rewards and are highly motivated to keep on practising

Reading eggs is an online programme that helps children with their reading and spelling. It involves a series of one-on-one lessons that allow the children to progress at their own rate. Reading Eggs goes from 3 to 7 year olds and is followed by Reading Eggspress for 7 to 13 year olds. Please visit www.readingeggs.co.nz to view sample lessons. We are able to offer parents a greatly reduced cost of $10 per subscription through to February next year.  If you would like to purchase Reading eggs through the school please send your money to the office by Monday June 25th.

SCIENCE FAIR PROJECTS
Over the past term our Year 7 and 8's have been working hard on their individual science investigations.  We have been blown away with the hard work the students have put into their projects and are most impressed with the extremely high quality of their work.

All the science projects will be on display in the Library on Monday next week and then moving to the senior school on Tuesday where they will remain until the end of the week.  You are more than welcome to come and view them.

HEAD LICE
Unfortunately we have noticed an alarming number of children with head lice in the school recently.  Please be vigilant with your own children, check their heads regularly and if you find any head lice or eggs at all, treat them immediately.  Children may come to school once they have been treated.

There are several specialised shampoos and Robicombs available from the chemist.  Due to the life cycle of Head Lice, it is important to check the hair for up to 3 weeks and treat accordingly.  You can also use a specialised fine-tooth comb, put lots of conditioner into the hair of the child which stuns them slightly and carefully comb through the entire scalp.

You may also like to use the services of Nitsy Pixies which is run by one of our parents.  They offer a revolutionary treatment to kill head lice and their eggs without using pesticides or other chemicals.

ARRIVAL TIME FOR STUDENTS
We have noted that several children have been arriving at school at 8am or sometimes earlier.  Although classrooms are open at this time, staff are just arriving for the day and are not able to supervise children.  Please ensure that children arrive after 8.15 to ensure their safety.

RUGBY REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS
Congratulations to Xavier Manson, Henry Griffiths, Ben Grenfell and Louis Rutherford who have been selected to represent Hutt Valley at the Central Zone Rugby Tournament in July.  Good luck to them all.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS
Muritai School has raised $1788 to date with the sale of Entertainment Books this year.  Thank you to everyone who bought a book/s.  Congratulations to Mia Weber whose family won a complimentary accommodation voucher from Rydges, Wellington.  If you have missed out on purchasing an Entertainment Book or would like to purchase additional copies, we still have a few books available in the office.  With the school holidays approaching, don’t forget that there are lots of fantastic offers for the family to enjoy.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAMME
With less than two weeks before the holidays start, please ensure that you have booked your children into the Muritai Out of School Care Holiday programme if you would like them to attend.  There are lots of fun activities to keep them occupied, including bowling and laser strike, a trip to Maidstone Park, coloured sand creations, water fun at H20 Extreme and much more.  We regret that we are unable to take any enrolments during the holidays due to staffing numbers and organising trips.  To enrol, please complete the on-line brochure or pick one up from the office.  Enrolments must be received by this Friday 22 June.  If you have any queries, please contact Mel on 562 7718 or masc@muritai.school.nz

6 June 2012

Welcome to Joseph Keenan, Che Brunskill, Petra Wilson, Quincy Buckley and Liam Eldridge-Fright all in Room 2.

It has been an interesting couple of weeks in education since the Budget announcements. The school newsletter is not the platform to discuss the politics of education, that comes through the Board of Trustees, but clearly there are some interesting times ahead. The Board has provided some commentary in their newsletter published on Friday and no doubt will keep you informed on developments affecting Muritai School as the details come to hand.

I talked to the school at assembly on Friday citing two examples of performance achieved through practice. Our cross country team, led by Mr McKay, trained hard everyday before the zone sports and were rewarded with the top school trophy. As the smallest school in the cluster it is incredible how Muritai consistently places in the top 3 overall team position time and time again. In training we noticed a healthy internal competition and collegial respect between the team members and this was commented on by teachers from other schools at the event - having a strength in numbers certainly!

The other example of performance is the gains we are making during classroom maths time. Maths is a core subject  and not everyone's favourite (often commented on by parents about their understanding of maths). This year we know that the children are doing much more practice in maths using mathletics than last year and because of that we are seeing gains in their confidence and their accuracy in the classroom, just four months into the programme.

So while we think school is about learning new things everyday, often it is really about practising the things we have to know to make sure we have them entrenched before we move onto the next thing. You may like to have a discussion at the dinner table about this - the old saying that practice makes perfect is a little old fashioned in today's instant world, but it makes a difference in the long term. Our athletes preparing for the Olympics will show the benefits of hard work next term in London.

Housekeeping
From time to time it is good to remind everyone about things....

Late to school - as it gets colder we are noticing children are arriving later and later. Children should be at school by the first bell at 8.40. Our goal is to be learning by 9.00 but some children arriving at 9 are disrupting the learning environment with their late arrival. 20 children were late to school today (arrived after second bell of 8.50).

Lost property - this is a persistent problem at Muritai and our lost property bins are overflowing with 62 unnamed sweatshirts, jerseys and jackets. Please be tough on your children in regards to looking after their personal gear. We are also aware of items that have been in lost property and been taken by either children and/or parents, even though it is not theirs. Sometimes it takes a couple of days to realise that clothing is lost and it is sad when people search for expensive items and they are not there.

Short shorts - a recent fashion trend in young girls is to wear shorts that are extremely short. In the olden days we used to call them hot pants (I am not sure why!).  Managing clothing is tricky for us as we don't have a uniform, but we are encouraging the girls to be modest in their clothing choices and so they may wear the 'short' shorts but with leggings underneath. We have spoken to the girls in year 5-8 about this.

PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS
We will be holding Parent/Teacher Interviews at the end of term as follows:-

Wednesday 27 June from 2.30pm to 8pm
Thursday 28 June from 2.30pm to 7.30pm

School will be closing early on both these days at 2.15pm with the first interviews starting at 2.30pm. You can make a booking at School Interviews, putting in the code WGFAJ and following the prompts. Alternatively, come to the school office and Carole or Sue will make the booking for you.

If you have a child in Room 2, you will have been contacted by Margs Mills or Maureen Buckley as interviews will be held over the next few weeks rather than on these two particular days.

If your child catches the bus, this will be at the normal time. Children waiting for buses or unable to be picked up at 2.15 will be kept in the school hall where a DVD will be shown.

YOUNG LEADERS DAY
On Monday 28 May Year 7 and 8 students of Muritai School had the opportunity to attend the National Young Leaders Day at the Michael Fowler Centre.  They had a group of inspiring speakers who talked to us about being the best we can be and sparking our potential as leaders.

First was Nick Tuatasi.  He served as a New Zealand policeman for 25 years and received many awards. His talk was very inspiring because he told us about SPARK.

Next was Jamie Fitzgerald. Jamie Fitzgerald taught us to find out what keeps you going when you want to stop. He said, “The first steps should always be harder than the last steps” He has walked across Antarctica and rowed from New Zealand to Australia. He told us to keep going because if you never give up you’ll get there eventually, it doesn’t matter whether it’s first or last. You have got to get to the finish line and you should be proud that you have accomplished whatever you were doing.

Speaker three was Cassandra Treadwell. Cassandra Treadwell started up an organisation called “So They Can” for people living in Kenya. At the young age of 16 Cassandra wanted to get involved with helping kids in Kenya. She has helped so many people. She said that people were trying to “hold her back” from doing what she wanted to do by saying “You will never be able to help with your busy life” and “You have four kids, there is no way you will be able to fit in any time for them” but look at her now! She’s helping thousands of people in Kenya by rebuilding their village.

The second to last speaker was Cam Calkoen. He was a funny and bubbly person with a disability (cerebal palsy), he overcame his fear of public talking, he was scared because of the way he talks. Cam was really inspirational.
The last speaker was Dave Atkinson. Dave was really funny, but while he was being funny he actually gave some advice that was really helpful. He made the talk enjoyable while he was explaining what being a leader is about and being a good leader is really important. He said this:

1: Stick up for what is right.
2: Choose good friends.
3: Live for others.

Dave Atkinson was my favourite speaker; he really did put the words in the right way for kids to understand. Over all the day was a really good and enjoyable experience. I would definitely love to go back as it really did get through to me what they were trying to say.
By Elspeth Morley.

COFFEE FUNDRAISER
Our Year 8's are fundraising for their Abel Tasman Camp which is taking place at the end of the year.  The approximate cost for the camp is $400 for each child.  For many families that is a big ask, especially when they have to pay for more than one child.

They will be selling coffee, tea, hot chocolate and home baking every Friday from 8.20 to 8.50 in the school foyer for the rest of this term and possibly Term 3.  We would really appreciate if you are able to support them.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR The Scholastic book fair is coming soon. If you haven't already made a note of the dates the book fair is open please do so now. We only have the Scholastic books in our library to view once a year. This is a great opportunity to see what you are purchasing and purchases can be taken on the day. The book fair runs in conjunction with the parent teacher interviews, on both Wednesday the 27th, and Thursday the 28th of June. Scholastic give the school a percentage from the sales made, enabling our library to provide new books for our students.

We are still looking for one person to help coordinate the book fair and also helpers who can spare an hour on either Wednesday or Thursday between the hours of 2:00 and 7pm to supervise and help with sales at the book fair. If you are able to help in any way please talk to Carole or Sue at the office. Thank you for your support.

NETBALL FEES
The netball season is well underway with children playing in the second half of the season.  Our teams are all doing well and hopefully getting a lot out of playing as a team.

There is a cost for playing netball which is paid up-front by the school and reimbursed by the parents.  Unfortunately, there are still some outstanding fees due to the school and would ask that if you have not already paid your child's netball fees, that you do so as soon as possible.
