The school Head and Deputy students have already represented us at the opening of the Eastbourne Heritage
Trail last Sunday, where they joined with some senior students in singing a waiata to open the event to all of
us in attendance. If you have not yet seen the Heritage Trail stands, do take a look at them as you walk
around Eastbourne, they are a wonderful asset to our community.

I was proud to attend the Eastbourne Community Board Awards last week where one of our own teachers
Mrs Buckley was given a special award!

Maureen was acknowledged for her long service at Muritai School  and as the award states “Mrs Buckley is a
wonderful teacher, loved by generations of Eastbourne School children and their families”.

We firmly agree with the ‘Eastbourne Order of Excellence’ and congratulate Mrs Buckley on a well deserved
acknowledgement!

One of our Muritai parents were also acknowledged at the Eastbourne Awards - Sally Bain was recognised for
her work with all of her environmental efforts and involvement over a long period of time in Eastbourne and
Bays.  Congratulations Sally from all of us at Muritai!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Tena koutou katoa, warm greetings to you all

Welcome back to school for 2018! We hope you all had a safe, fun and relaxing summer and holiday season packed with plenty of beach time and spending time with your nearest and dearest.  It has been nice to have a couple of short weeks to begin with children easing into a term filled with learning adventures! We hope you all had a fantastic extended Waitangi Weekend and took a moment to be thankful that we live in such a special country!

Thank you for supporting us with the extra day on Monday which we used as a Teacher Only Day with the entire staff -  office staff, support staff, library and teaching staff all spent time looking into the vision, mission and values of Muritai School. We were working with Mark Osborne, a well known education consultant as we began to dig into our future thinking for Muritai School. It’s really important to gather all voices, and your voices will be heard too, as we are now confirming dates with Mark to meet with our parents and our Board of Trustees later this term.

We have had an absolutely wonderful start to the term and year with the return of our energetic tamariki. Thank you for welcoming our new students and staff to Muritai - we are delighted to welcome the following staff to the Muritia whanau: Kate McLean (teaching in Room 10), Holli Williams (teaching in Room 14), Jenny George (teaching in Room 21), Gretchen Campbell and Hannah Watkins (part of our support staff superstar team).

Safety Message from the Community Constable:
Please see the flyer below around tips for child safety brought to us from our friendly Community Constable.  We encourage you to go through these as a start of year organisation reminder of getting to and from school.  We are so lucky to live in such a safe environment, however empowering children with the knowledge of what to do if something unusual is occurring is incredibly important.

Alistair Blair Trust:
We are so fortunate to be the holders of the Alistair Blair Trust.  Alistair was a past pupil of Muritai School who sadly passed away in a tragic accident in his early adulthood.  His family keep his memory alive annually by supporting the children and families of Muritai school who may be facing financial hardship.  The Trust Account is managed by our Board of Trustees and all recipients are highly confidential.  If you or someone you know are unable to take part in a school opportunity due to finances, you may like to be considered as a recipient.  Please direct all queries to myself Principal@Muritai.school.nz
In 2017 the Alistair Blair Trust donated $400 to enable a child to attend the Abel Tasman camp.  We as a school community once again thank the Blair family for their ongoing generosity to the children of Muritai School.

Learning partnership survey:
It was excellent to see so many of you at the Learning Partnership Meetings this week.  If you were unable to make the times available, please do take the time to connect with your child's teacher around your thoughts and goals for 2018. https://goo.gl/hqmCMH
We would love your feedback on the Learning Partnership Meetings - please take a moment to share: https://goo.gl/DMfzT5
