Naumai e te whanau o te kura Muritai
Tena koutou katoa

Welcome to our new children who have started at Muritai lately...Morgan Donnelly, Sebastian Thompson, Levon Anderson, Finlaeic Forde, Silas Brunskill, Noah Turner, Akhil Chittenden, Lucy Wray.

We are nearly into the last week of the year.

I have enjoyed the busy hum of the school over the last 2 weeks watching the children changing from traditional learning to more outside the classroom based learning. Seeing children moving from one thing to another with big smiles on their faces in anticipation of their next learning experience is a real treat.

ERO
We enjoyed sharing our school with the Education Review Office a fortnight ago. The review officers were very impressed with what they saw and were able to look closely into our practice, how well our children are engaged in their learning, and what we are doing to enable Muritai students to be the best that they can be. Feedback to the Board of Trustees was extremely positive and summary details will be in the Board newsletter out next week.

STAFFING
As already notified we say goodbye to Raihania Chadwick and Murray McMillan at the end of this year. Replacing them at Muritai in year 5-6 is Carl Woodhams, who joins us from Waitomo Caves School, and Shelley Frith, who joins us from Karori Normal School. Janelle McKay will continue as a classroom teacher in year 2 next year. Richard Dobson returns to teaching in year 3-4 after a year doing reading recovery and Gabrielle Heath takes on reading recovery/release teaching for 2015. Carol Algar moves through from year 4 to year 5-6 and Mikaela Cody moves from year 2 to year 3. Jess Savage and Annabel Smith are on maternity leave for 2015.

Staff have worked through class placements for 2015. This is an enormous task and takes a huge amount of time and effort  to get the best fit for your child.  There are many variables relating to the teaching and learning needs of every child that require careful consideration when making these placement decisions. The reality is that we have placed 414 children into 18 rooms and so it is impossible to realise an individuals preference of a teacher or friendship group, while needing to allocate all children into classrooms across the whole school.  Please trust our professional judgements regarding class placements.

As we approach the end of the year we have confirmed our 2015 plans. As always we have some subtle changes that were required but still maintain the strength of the school.

Nina Schneider
This Friday we say goodbye to Nina Schneider who has spent the last few months at Muritai School. Nina is heading to Teachers College in Germany in 2015 and has taken the opportunity to come to New Zealand and work in a school in preparation for her professional career. We are so grateful to Nina for getting in touch with us – she has been absolutely wonderful in her time at Muritai and we know that she will make an outstanding teacher back in Germany.

EOTC WEEKS
Although it is pouring with rain today it has been a wonderful experience for the children to be involved in the education outside the classroom challenges over the last fortnight or so. The teachers have done well to mix learning, fun and teamwork together and the children have just been superb in their enthusiasm to make the most of these opportunities. As always we have relied heavily on parental support to help make things work and for that we are particularly grateful. There are numerous photos on class blogs or our school Facebook page of each groups experience.

UKULELE PERFORMANCE AT KINDY

After completing 5 sessions of learning the ukulele, a group of Year 7 and 8 students went to the kindy to give them a concert and what a truly lovely time everyone had! We played selection of songs from our repertoire then played some songs that the wee guys knew and got them to sing along with us. They then performed for us, which was incredibly cute! It was delightful to see our big children interacting with the kindy kids - they didn't want to leave! We plan to keep this relationship going with the kindy in 2015 and develop it further.

REGIONAL ATHLETICS

Congratulations to our athletes who competed in the Wellington regional athletics competition. Our participants produced an outstanding performance and concluded what has been another excellent year for sport
at Muritai.

Year 4 boys relay team - 1st - Luca McKay, Harry Rookes, Fraser Belliss, Tom Brownsword, Joe Dickson
Year 7 girls relay team - 1st - Macey Caughley, Helena Cvitanovich, Angelina Hardy, Sofiya Dickson

HUTT HIGH BAND
Last Thursday the seniors were treated to a concert from a group of Hutt Valley High Year 10, ex Muritai boys and they just blew us away! Gus Reece, Dorian McRae and Louis Sutherland were all in a band in their final years at Muritai and have continued to play together at Hutt High. Tane Rolfe who left at the end of Year 6 also played and sang for us and we all agreed they were a bunch of super talented young men. Their passion for music is huge and it was wonderful to see how far they've all come. I am certain we will be hearing more from these boys in the future! Grace, their music teacher, does this every year and gets the students to return to their Primary schools and perform. She spoke to our students about the importance of signing up for groups and clubs and trying out as many things as you can.

COMMUNITY CAROLS
A group of Year 3 and 4 students will be performing a couple of numbers at the Eastbourne Community Carols service on Sunday 14th at 5.00pm. This concert is held annually at the Muritai Hall and is always a lovely occasion for families with young children. There will be a sausage sizzle and a surprise visit from Father Christmas. Many thanks to the students who will represent our school.

Eastbourne Carnival
What a wonderful event on Sunday for the Eastbourne Carnival. The good weather does help make the day extra special and we were blessed on the day with sunshine and warmth. The day went without a hitch and that is a huge credit to the organising team led by Sally Bain. The work and the hours they have put in was rewarded with a fantastic occasion and we are immensely grateful for their efforts.

It looks as though we will net between $50-$55,000 profit from the day which is quite exceptional. The children have raised $2000 for KidsCan through their initiatives so it is nice to be able to pay it forward.

We are hugely grateful to the team of parents who got together to help on the Saturday and the Sunday to make it such a memorable day for Muritai.

Library Opening

Last Friday we celebrated the beginning of a new journey for our school library. It is a beautiful building and it was a lovely ceremony and we were pleased when Sue Fieldes and our oldest and youngest children, Hannah Moffitt and George Saunderson, cut the ribbon to officially open the building. Our thanks to our architects McKenzie Higham, the building team Tracy Smith Construction, our property managers Barry and Natasha at Posseniskies, and Kevin Curren, our MOE property officer.

Staff
Sadly at the end of this year we say goodbye to 2 of our staff who are both taking their young families and moving south to be closer to their parents. Raihania Chadwick, after 8 years at Muritai, is moving south to Wanaka and Murray McMillan is moving to Nelson after 3 years at Muritai. Both Raihania and Murray will be sorely missed by children and their colleagues. We are currently recruiting to replace them and will advise the community when we have made appointments.

ERO
This week we are hosting the Education Review Office who is reviewing the school. They meet with the Board of Trustees and senior leadership team on Friday to give feedback of their findings on school performance.

Central Zone Athletics / Inter-zone athletics

Building Project
With the new library up and going the building team have moved onto phase 2 of the project to convert the old library back to a classroom and build the deck off the middle block. Phase 2 should be finished by the end of the school term.

Next week the big gum tree between the new and old library will be coming down. It has faded badly over the last 12 months and presents a danger within the school environment. We will be planting trees in front of the middle block and will carry this round to replace the big gum tree. While we don't like taking trees out at Muritai, it carries significant risk to our people, including children.

Blue Day - Diabetes Awareness
Last Friday we dressed up in blue to support people who live with type 1 diabetes. We were lucky to have Lesley from the Diabetes Association talk to the school and explain how diabetes affects the body and how we have to look after ourselves to stay fit and healthy. We raised $502.

Wednesday 12th November

Naumai e te whanau o te kura Muritai
Tena koutou katoa

As we approach the mid point of the term we see an exciting fortnight ahead of us. By the end of week 7 we will have opened our new library, held the Eastbourne Carnival and completed our latest ERO review.

This Friday at 2pm we will be opening our new library. After many years of planning we are finally able to open this beautiful building and welcome our children into it to enjoy for many years to come. While we open the library to allow it to be used, its first actual tenancy will be as a classroom. Room 16 will move in there as we need to start our latest new entrant group with Liz Sullivan teaching this class until the end of the year.

The builders have moved onto the next phase of the project, which is to return the old library back to a classroom for 2015, build a deck out the front of the 2-story block and improve the access way to the south end of the building as well as a new formal entrance from Oroua St.

The organising team have done a terrific job on the Eastbourne Carnival for this year. We are so lucky to have such an outstanding team on board. Funds raised this year will go towards our ICT resources as we look to purchase new and replace old devices for our children.Everything is in place for the day and we just need 3 things now to make it work.
1.    Spread the word - tell your friends, work colleagues and the like, to get as many people to Eastbourne as possible. If 12,000 people all spend $5 inside the school then we make $60,000 for things for our children.
2.    We still need volunteers. The gaps are listed in the school foyer and this is filling up slowly, but positively.
3.    A fine day!

As we move into the last 5 weeks of term there is no let up for the staff and no let up for the children as well. Teachers are hard at work continuing class programmes through to the end of the year.  They are also required to complete important work to close off the year with reports being written, assessment folders completed, class lists assembled and preparation for 2015. As always however, if you have any concerns please feel free to contact them to discuss any issue you may have.

We are looking forward to our ERO visit in week 7. I have sent off the first wave of documents for the pre-review and felt pleased with the considerable progress the school has made since our last ERO visit. Our evidence shows the children are achieving really well, in good spirits and we are continuing to improve as a school in nice incremental chunks. It is all part of our strategic growth.

Recently we asked our children to give us feedback on a 'student survey' and we were pleasantly surprised to get a significantly positive review from our children. They really do feel that Muritai is a great place to come to school. Having said that there were some key issues raised and some comments that allow us to continue to work on building strong and effective relationships between the children to ensure all children feel safe and are happy in their school day!

NEW MURAL IN SENIOR SCHOOL
We were able to put up our latest mural art work in the senior school yesterday. A 'big' effort was required to put this together by our senior children. Thanks to Nancy Barclay and Lisa Allen for your co-ordination and expertise, and to our caretaker, Roger and the Menz Shed for their installation. It really is a wonderful piece of work for all to enjoy!

ATHLETIC SPORTS
The Y3-8 Athletic sports day was AWESOME!...Mr McKay organised amazing weather (and a great schedule) and all of the students did a great job competing and supporting one another. There was  a lovely atmosphere all day and it was an inspired choice to do the relays at the Rec!

Congratulations to our year group champions...

Year 3 - Rosa Blair and Marcus Ruane
Year 4 - Ella Young and Rory Moffat
Year 5 - Emily Jones and Jack Evans
Year 6 - Samantha Woolley and Theo Jones
Year 7 - Helena Cvitanovich and Lincoln Moffat
Year 8 - Brianna Kirkham & Milly Griffiths and Jake Murphy

Relay results...

Y4 - 1st Room 12, 2nd Room 8, 3rd Room 7
Y5/6 - 1st Room 15, 2nd Room 16, 3rd Room 13, 4th Room 14
Y7/8 - 1st Room 23, 2nd Room 24, 3rd Room 22
House Relay - 1st Cook, 2nd Sanson, 3rd Charters, 4th King

Best of luck to the year 4-6 athletics team competing next week at the Central Zone sports.

PEDAL READY
The Y5/6 syndicate has been involved in the 'Pedal Ready' cycle skills programme over the past 2 weeks.  It has been a fantastic programme for all students as it has given them lots of up to date cycle safety skills as well as a huge amount of confidence in riding their bikes.  It has been a very positive experience for all and we are hoping to continue with the programme in 2015.

BLUE DAY FOR DIABETES
Tomorrow, Friday the 14th, we are holding a Blue Day for Type-One Diabetes. We are helping to spread awareness in the community by asking students to dress in blue (you can dress up too if you want!) and bring in a gold coin donation to go towards helping youth with Type-One Diabetes. Try and make your costume as funky as possible.

Type One Diabetes is an 'auto-immune' condition which cannot be prevented but can be managed through a combination of medication, healthy food choices and exercise.  It is often confused with Type-Two Diabetes.

So, please dress up in blue, bring a gold coin, and help us raise awareness of diabetes in our community this Friday!

CRICKET WELLINGTON COACHING FOR YEAR 3-4
Lee and Esther from Cricket Wellington came to Muritai School to promote Cricket.  Lee used to play for the Firebirds cricket team and knows his cricket!

Lee took us for wicket relays and we practiced running, throwing and catching.  We learned how to hit the wickets with underarm and overarm throws.  Our non-throwing arm we used for aiming at the wickets.

Esther taught us how to catch the ball correctly by making a basket with our hands.  We had to follow catching sequences in our teams and it was very tricky to remember the sequences at times.

We had lots of fun and would love them to visit us again soon!

RICHIE HACKNEY
Local Personal Trainer Richie Hackney has been coming in to school to work with the children from years 5-8 teaching fitness and boxing. It was really exciting because he is a professional boxer and he really knows what he is talking about.

Richie was fantastic.  Together we worked on our fitness and the correct way to exercise.  He told us about what muscle groups we were using and we spoke a lot about the importance of exercise.  Mr Bird would love him because he constantly reinforces that we need to be the best we can be. We were challenged but had a huge amount of fun doing it too.

A few of us have now joined his boxing group that he runs after school and love it.
