FRIDAY 1 JUNE 2018

Kia Ora, Talofa Lava, Greetings, Malo e Lelei, Kia Orana, Bonjour, Nǐ hǎo, Hallo, Hola, Kon'nichiwa,
Namaste, G’day mate

A warm welcome to Lara Corsi and Lauryn Bullock to room 2 this week.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Talofa lava, warm greetings to you all - this week is Samoan language week.

We have had a busy time with Cross Country events, and I have been privileged to spectate
our students demonstrating grit and determination to challenge themselves in our school
cross country last week,  and then again with 77 representatives who qualified for the zone Cross
Country event held yesterday.

Our unique Muritai cross country course provides challenge and fun - however the cold and
windy conditions last Thursday really put our students to the test!

Well done to all students who challenged themselves, and to parents who donated time for
marshalling and coming along to these events to support our learners.

Muritai Vision, Mission and Values
Today you will receive a survey via email that is our final ‘loop back’ to parents following the
synthesis of the information following the term 1 parent consultation hui.  I encourage you
to vote and have your voice heard on our final options for the future Vision, Mission and
Values for Muritai School.

Māori and Pasifika Parent Hui
Last night we held a hui in our library to consult with our community in order to develop
the strategic direction for our Māori and Pasifika learners.  We enjoyed meeting each
other, greeting with mihi and pepeha, learning about our school’s commitment to Te tiriti
o Waitangi and some guiding documents that we use as a school to guide our teaching
and learning programmes in Te Ao Māori. We spent time hearing from our community
around how we can best communicate with whanau, what tools or skills our staff might
need, and how we can support ‘being Māori’ at Muritai school.

We had very rich discussion, and wove the parent thinking together while we enjoyed
some kai.  Our next hui will begin to unpack how we can develop a strategy with these
beliefs and ideas alongside our Muritai whanau.

Thank you to all who attended, we are delighted that you could come, and to have begun
this journey with you.

Guitar Group
Our students who learn guitar performed at the Eastbourne Library last Friday to
acknowledge NZ Music Month.  The ‘gig’ was very well attended by friends and family,
and if you were lucky enough to attend, you will know the students were fantastic! Thank
you to our guitar tutor Charles, and to our hosts the Eastbourne Library who created the
opportunity for our Muritai guitarists to shine.

Remember Monday is a public holiday as it is Queen’s Birthday Weekend.  Enjoy the long
weekend, and we look forward to seeing you back on Tuesday.

FROM THE SCHOOL

SE ZONE CROSS COUNTRY
The SE Zone Cross Country was held yesterday, Thursday the 31st of May.  The weather conditions
could have been better, yet it was certainly a better choice of days compared to the originally
planned Tuesday of this week.  Muritai had 77 students from Year 4 to Year 8 participate in this
event having already run very successfully at the school cross country to qualify and should be
commended for making this event. All runners gave it their best throughout the day and did
Muritai school proud. Official results are still to come in, however, we can celebrate a number
of successes throughout the day. The Muritai students displayed excellent levels of team
camaraderie and amazing levels of sportsmanship towards other participants. We look
forward to the Inter-zone event on the 19th of June. This is for those runners who made the
top 15 in each heat in the SE zones.

MAYORAL VISIT
Mayor Ray Wallace visited the school this Monday, talking to teachers and children about
their learning.  Well done to our school leaders who organised an afternoon tea and tour of the school.

TEAM KĀHU STEM
Team Kāhu recently visited the Roxy Cinemas in Miramar courtesy of the Docs4Schools
programme which offers free screenings of documentaries from the DocEdge Film Festival
for primary schools.  The students watched Point of No Return and were treated to a Q&A
sessions with the directors to follow.

They then visited Weltec for a rotation of incredible demonstrations and ‘hands on’
activities in their laboratories - with the focus being exploring how testing materials relates
to engineering in ‘real life’!

Enormous thanks to our wonderful parent helpers: Mary, Dechen, Emily, Sarah, Kathryn,
Hayley, Jo and Mel and the incredible team at Weltec who made such an incredible day
possible.

METLINK SCHOOL SERVICES
We have received the following information from Metlink School Services:
We’re improving our region’s public transport network so that it will take more people to more
places, more often.  From Sunday 17 June 2018, there will be changes to Metlink school and
We’re also rolling out new-look Metlink buses and bus transfers at no extra cost within 30 minutes
when using Snapper. The final fare you pay will be based on the number of zones you travel on
your entire journey, even if you have to catch more than one bus.

The colour of Metlink school buses are also changing. Please remind your students to check the
route number and destination, rather than the colour of the bus, before they get on-board.
Changes to how students pay to get to and from school
Classic Coaches 10-trip tickets are being discontinued
From Sunday 17 June 2018, Snapper will replace 10-trip tickets on school services that are
currently run by Classic Coaches in Wainuiomata and Eastbourne.  If you buy a Classic Coaches
10-trip ticket before 17 June, you will still be able to use this on Metlink buses until 30 June
2018. The alternative for students using Metlink buses from 17 June is to pay using a
Snapper card with a Child Concession applied. From the start of Term 3 all students
travelling on Metlink bus services will need to pay using a Snapper card. The Classic
Coaches 10-trip ticket will no longer be accepted.
School term passes are being discontinued
If your students use school term passes for Metlink and NZ Bus services, these will continue
to be accepted until the end of Term 2, Friday 6 July 2018.  From the start of Term 3,
Monday 23 July 2018, school term passes will be discontinued and students using Metlink
services will need to pay using a Snapper card with a Child Concession for Metlink buses,
or use Metlink rail 10-trips and monthly passes on Metlink trains.
School service changes – Hutt Valley
A number of school bus services in the Hutt Valley are changing from 17 June 2018.  Please
refer to the maps and timetables for your school in the attachment.
There are also some minor changes to Metlink public bus timetables from 17 June 2018. Please
refer to https://www.metlink.org.nz/on-our-way/hutt-valley/ for information about these changes.
Please note that there will be a mix of new and existing operators in the Hutt Valley, so new drivers
will need to learn the routes and any unique operations at your school.
If there are specific arrangements you have with the current operators relating to afterschool pick
up operations, such as managing the buses on school grounds, please contact us at schools@metlink.org.nz

FRIDAY 18 MAY 2018

Kia Ora, Talofa Lava, Greetings, Malo e Lelei, Kia Orana, Bonjour, Nǐ hǎo, Hallo, Hola, Kon'nichiwa, Namaste, G’day mate

A warm welcome to Kelli Jewell in Room 16, Keegan Field in Room 2, Charlie Ledingham Room 3 and Fraser Halman in Room 2 this week.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Tena koutou katoa, warm greetings to you all

Gaming conversation - Fortnite
You may or may not be aware of the popularity around the digital game called Fortnite - Battle Royale.  Never before have we seen a game reach across every gaming platform including XBox, Playstation and as an app on any device.  At school we as a staff have been hearing much about this game from students of almost all ages, so it has caused us to dig into some thinking and considerations around the conversations and links to learning implications it may have at school.
We have had some rigorous discussions and looked into research around the game as a teaching staff over the past two weeks, and we have decided to not connect Fortnite to any learning conversations or activities e.g. writing recounts, due to the violent nature of the game, and the online chat facility.
We will leave the discussions and conversations around whether your child is allowed to play the game or not up to you, however we encourage you to check out some of the literature surrounding the game - for example Common Sense Media recommend a rating of 13+ as an age to play the game.  https://www.commonsensemedia.org/blog/parents-ultimate-guide-to-fortnite#whatisbr

Bullying Free Week - Kia Kaha
This week is the nationwide Bullying Free Week.  Today is Pink Shirt Day where students have arrived wearing pink to take a stand against Bullying.  In New Zealand, Pink Shirt Day aims to create schools, workplaces and communities where all people feel safe, valued and respected.

Thank you for coming along to our parent meetings last week around our Kia Kaha programme.  Constable ‘Blue’ McCaffery outlined the programme and we answered any queries from parents in attendance.  If you would like any further information on this programme, please see your classroom teacher.

We continue to strengthen our response to bullying as a staff by developing our school wide behaviour management plan. We have consistency as a staff and clear expectations as teachers and students around what is expected, and how we address behaviour we don’t want to see at Muritai School.

Written Reports Mid Year
Thank you for your generous feedback on the reporting survey.  We have had an enormous amount of feedback which we will review along with the staff and student voice in the development of our written reports.   In Term 2 we will create a mid year reporting format, then ask for further feedback on the format following these going home in preparation for our end of year written reports.
