Thursday 8th May

Kia ora koutou,

Welcome to Luca Corsi who has started in room 3 this week.

As we near the end of week three we are well ensconced in the term 2 learning programme. It looks as though the weather has turned a little so a reminder for the children to have slippers for indoors and warm clothing and wet weather gear if necessary.

Bayer Science Fund
We are pleased to receive a grant from the Bayer Science Fund for $1800. This is to allow us to acquire a tunnel house, do some propagation work and grow plants for our gardens from seed.

Start times for the day.
Can I gently remind people that we really want the children to be arriving at school at around 8.30ish. Our first bell goes at 8.40am and children come in to get ready for the school day - it also allows the children to catch up with their friends before school. The 8.50 bell is when we start our administration to kick off the learning at 9.00 sharp. Kids arriving late disrupt the class and staff are experiencing parents coming into the rooms with their late children. While this fussing is going on it is difficult for the teacher to retain the children's attention.

Wacky Hair Day - Well done to the students who came to school with their wacky hair on Tuesday. Working with the East Harbour Kindergarten we raised $1007.40 for the Red Cross Nepal  Appeal funds.

Year 7/8 Sparks - Personal Passion Projects
For the first half of this term our Year 7 and 8 pupils are spending Friday mornings focusing on their passions. Each student developed a proposal to present to their teacher on a project they would like to carry out for 5 weeks. They were required to plan and manage their time effectively, think about what resources they required, problem solve to overcome challenges and reflect on the progress they are making. There is a huge variety of projects that the students are working on from fishing, cooking and movie making through to science and history inquiries, teaching PE skills and visual art projects. The teachers have been blown away with the motivation of all the students and how well they are managing themselves in a less structured classroom environment. We will keep you posted with progress throughout the rest of the term!

Entertainment Books
Muritai School is pleased to offer parents the opportunity to purchase the 2015/2016 Wellington and Manawatu Entertainment Memberships again this year to help us raise funds towards our fundraising.

You can choose from the popular Entertainment Books or the Entertainment Digital Membership which puts the value of the Entertainment Book into your iPhone or Android smartphone.  For only $60, you will be helping our fundraising with $12 from every membership sold contributing to our fundraising.  A copy of the Entertainment Book will be sent home with your child shortly.  If you do not wish to receive a book, please send an email to michelle.fisher@xtra.co.nz stating “I do not wish to receive a Book” in the subject line.  To purchase securely online or to order an Entertainment Digital Membership, visit www.entbook.co.nz/10409n4

Planting Bee
Our last gardening bee did a wonderful job at tidying up the gardens at the school. We are now looking at planting and making our garden look beautiful.  Please come along and help us, meeting at the Oroua Street entrance between 1pm to 4pm on Saturday 16 May.  Bring your own spade and lots of enthusiasm.  We will be having a sausage sizzle at the end of the afternoon.  If you need any information, please contact Kate Brownsword on 027 562 0177.

Year 5-6 Zone Football
Muritai School competed in the central zones football tournament on Tuesday the 5th of May at Sladden Park in Petone. All our teams displayed fantastic sportsmanship and experienced many wins, draws and a few losses too. Every team played exceptionally well, however the Muritai Spurs and Muritai Hammers had a nail biting final competing against each other in the last round of the tournament. A special thank you to all the parents who transported children to and from the tournament, the supporters and the team supervisors.

Non-official Results:
Y6 Boys (A Grade) - Muritai Gunners, 4th Place
Y5 Boys (B Grade) - Muritai Spurs, 1st Place
Y5/6 Boys (B Grade) - Muritai Hammers, 2nd Place

Y5/6 Girls (C Grade) - Muritai Nix, 4th Place

Capital E
On April 29th, our Y7-8 technicraft group went on the Eastbourne ferry to Capital E OnTv Studio to film a movie about Gallipoli. When we got there we went into the public lounge area (where we waited to do the filming). It was filled with all sorts of random items and tunnels and was very fun to explore. Then we ventured upstairs to the OnTv studio. They had a filming room with green screen, a sound room and a costume / make up room. After much rehearsing we started filming. The documentary covered the beginning of WW1, the landings, the trenches, diseases, technology, truces and how it ended. We did three run throughs and then chose the best one to be the final one. Everyone found it most informative and had a lot of fun at the same time. The group did their job amazingly and the final film looked very good. Once we had finished we went to the food court to buy lunch and then to Frank Kitts park to eat. On our way back to the ferry we stopped in at the City and Sea Museum and had a quick browse. Being involved in this project and filming at OnTv was an awesome experience and we would love to do it again.
Thanks to Mrs Hooke for organising the trip and Suzanne Levy for accompanying us.
