FRIDAY 14 AUGUST 2015

Naumai e te whanau o te kura Muritai
Tena koutou katoa
The end of week 4 already! Welcome to Amy Mouat and Lily Brien who have joined the Muritai family this week. I am sure you will thoroughly enjoy your time at Muritai School.

What a miserable start to the week it was but we managed to get through those wet days and enjoy the last couple of days where we could get out and run around. The children are to be congratulated for their conduct this week - they have been exceptional, when cabin fever and frustration could have been the norm!

We have had between 40 and 60 children a day away this week. There are lots of colds, sniffles and flu around at the moment so we are pleased that you are adhering to our advice to keep sick children away from school. School is quite intensive and if children are not well they find it very difficult to focus and maintain concentration in amongst 25 other children.

Just a reminder to call in to inform us if your child is going to be away from school. We have been making about 10 calls every day to track down children who are absent where we have received no notification. Please make sure that you call into our absence line on 562 8409.

We have our school disco tonight. Thank you to our wonderful group of parents at the Home and School who have done all the organisation and decoration to make it happen. It will be a fun night. Please, please, please collect your child, or make arrangements to have your child collected from the school hall.

Thank you to Kate, Nick, Dianne and Paul….who helped plant our new orchard on the field. These fruit trees - apples, pears, plums and feijoas were donated by the Hutt City Council and hopefully they can get their roots established, we can keep little fingers off them and the trees safe from rugby balls, etc. It is always a challenge but one worth having to add to the things we have at Muritai and adding to our school character.

We have received news recently that Stu Devenport, our associate principal of the senior school, has won the position of principal at South Makirikiri School in the Manawatu. Stu has been at Muritai since 2007 and has been an influential member of our teaching staff. Stu will finish up at Muritai at the end of this year and begin at his new school in 2016. We are all thrilled for Stu to be taking the next step in his career, and at such a highly rated country school as well. Congratulations Stu!

TOWARDS 2020.
The Board of Trustees and the staff have been working on planning ahead to develop some strategic ideas to take Muritai forward to the year 2020. The Board would like to invite parents to a ‘forward thinking session’ on Monday the 7th September from 7.30pm. If you would like to come along and be part of the process we would love to see you there.

To help start your thinking have a look at this wonderful talk on education from 2013 by Sir Ken Robinson.

YEAR 5-8 SCHOOL PRODUCTION
As it is week 5 next week we are starting the run in to this year’s arts production which this year sees us trying something a little different. Usually every 2 years we do a Wearable Arts show but in line with our ‘passions’ projects this year we are offering children some extra opportunities to produce a show that encompasses not only Wearable Arts but also drama, photography, visual arts and percussion.

Show dates are the 15th, 16th and 17th of September

ONTV
Capital E - The Wahine Experience.
On the 5th of August, eleven year 7 & 8’s ferried across the harbour to spend the morning at Capital E to make a news report about the Wahine disaster.

We already had our roles assigned as we’d done this at school along with writing our interviews and news reports. We then met Peter who was the director of the show. He showed us the layout and explained how the show would run. Then we moved through to the wardrobe area and got changed into the appropriate clothes, practiced and rehearsed.

Finally we filmed the whole show in one go from start to end, everybody did really well whether they did an acting role or did the camera and sound. It was very interesting learning about this historical event that happened in Wellington, the sinking of the Wahine.

For lunch we walked to a food court in the city. The only rule was that we had to spend our own money on whatever we bought. We then got to walk around the circular foodcourt. Most of the students ordered sushi. After everyone had eaten their lunches, we headed over to the ‘Frank kitts’ park on the waterfront to pass time. We observed and took photos of a sleeping sea lion that was resting on some rocks.

After going to the beautiful Frank Kitts park, we then walked to the museum and looked more into the interesting Wahine disaster. Then headed into a room showing a long and fascinating video of the Wahine disaster, after the video, everyone was allowed to go and explore the intriguing museum. Clicking all the interactive buttons and touring the whole museum was so much fun, I’m sure we’d all love to go there again.

Then we went back to the ferry to end the amazing trip we’d been on. Luckily the ferry ride was sunny and not bumpy. And once everyone had gotten onto the ferry, they got some fresh cold ice blocks to end the stunning day.

The Capital E trip was such a blast! Everyone had such a good time, filming the Wahine disaster, going to the food court for lunch, then Frank Kitts park afterwards, and going to the museum. We would all like to thank Mrs Hooke, Peter and everyone who helped for making this day happen.

NUDE FOOD WEEK IS COMING
As an aim to reduce waste at our school and our impact on the environment, our enviro team are encouraging students to reduce their lunchbox waste.

You can help by choosing foods that are not single wrapped, using reusable lunch containers and cutting out Gladwrap where possible.  Initially we are encouraging children to take their waste away so they can see how much each of us as an individual or family create. Then to try and reduce that by choosing lunches that encourage zero waste. We will celebrate our changes with a total 'Nude Food' week in the next few weeks.

Thank you for supporting this student led initiative.
The Enviro Team.

Keep encouraging your children to learn their basis facts ready for the Fact-A-Thon next week.

ACTION REPLAY
Next week the “Action Replay” campaign launches across the Hutt. This campaign aims to gather donations of quality sports gear and recycle them into Hutt communities where deprivation is high. This project will help young people and families into a range of opportunities, reducing the risk of non-communicable disease and create happier communities.
Can you help? During the week August 17-21 there will be containers in four locations. We are interested in any item which you perceive will create a new opportunity for somebody to be active (but probably not ski gear, wooden tennis rackets or kayaks).
You might also earn browny points at home for (early) spring cleaning.
Your donation will go straight to where it is needed.

Much more on the project is visible here. http://bit.ly/1KPrDCC
