Naumai e te whanau o te kura Muritai
Kia ora koutou

The school has a spring in its step this week after the All Blacks success during the weekend. There is a lot to admire from New Zealand sporting organisations. The way they work as a collective and the way we consistently perform well on the world stage is the envy of many more populated and wealthier countries. It appears many of our athletes are well grounded and their humility enables them to work effectively in a team, rather than as a collection of individuals. It is something we often reflect on as a staff here at Muritai, about our teamwork and indeed how well we are shaping our classes as teams, rather than as individuals. Lately the All Blacks have set the benchmark as to how an organisation can perform consistently at a high level and so by watching and understanding their organisation can guide us to be successful as well.

After a wet couple of days this week, Friday has dawned as an absolute cracker. It is very quiet here today with many of the children in town at the All Black parade. Next week is week 5 and then the following week swimming starts. Wow! Time is marching on but we are very proud of the way the children are retaining their focus and doing their best.

Thank you for your contributions to the Board survey. It is now closed. We received 40 responses.

ATHLETICS
The year 3-8 school thoroughly enjoyed a windy athletic sports on Monday. It was great to be out seeing the children giving everything a go and doing their very best. I was stationed at the high jump, which is not everyone’s cup of tea, but was so impressed with firstly the overall enthusiasm of the kids to have a go but also how earnest they were at trying to achieve personal bests. We do see lovely examples of sportsmanship throughout the day from our children and we received a complimentary email from a parent about the actions of one of our students Elodie Bain who stopped in the middle of the sprints to help a fellow competitor who had tripped and fallen. This is a wonderful quality from Elodie, to put the welfare of others before her own self and we really respect and celebrate her kind actions.

As always in a competition there are winners and for 2015 our school year group champions are:

Year 3 - Emma McRobbie and Monty Potter
Year 4 - Rosa Blair, Mia Campbell and Ethan Baxter
Year 5 - Alexandra Irvine and Fraser Bellis
Year 6 - Grace Manson and Henry Evans
Year 7 - Tessa Treadwell-Burke and Tom Griffiths
Year 8 - Helena Cvitanovich and Tom Flynn

Many children qualified to compete for Muritai at the Y4-6 central zone sports on Tuesday 17 November.

CELEBRATION OF LEARNING
An important date for your diary is Monday 30 November. The children will be hosting you for their celebration of learning that afternoon from 3pm until 6pm. Please place this date in your diary so you can join in the celebration.

HUTT VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL LEADERS
We are very proud of 3 of our ex-students who have been appointed to leading roles at HVHS next year. Hazel Sisson and Troix Kokich are Deputy Head students and Abby Barclay is Cultural Captain. This is a very good return as Muritai only makes up about 6-7% of the year 9 intake but consistently contributes students to the leadership team in year 13.

Chatting Children
You may have noticed a new Mural on the end of Room 17.  This was completed by the Muritai Art Ambassadors.  This is a little bit to describe the meaning and story behind it.

‘Chatting Children’ is our adaptation of Philip Trustum’s “Gossiping Women”.  We had been looking at Philip Trustum’s work in class, and we had already made our own single piece of art (using his style), we had loved the whole process of adding random shapes and colours, so when the opportunity came to create a mural, we had to choose his style.

Of course, we didn't copy Philip Trustums art, we simply incorporated his style into our mural.  At first we found it difficult because we wanted a mural that would reflect our school, the children, the teachers and our beautiful community and setting we have here in Eastbourne… A LOT to fit in!

But then we chose to make it more compact, and just base it around the amazing relationships we have between student/ teacher and student/ student.

Here at Muritai, we value the key competencies; Relating to Others, Thinking, Participating and Contributing, and Managing self.  We decided to have different characters doing things that we all do at school, painting, gardening and relating to each others, etc.

On the first board we have a female teacher literally “pouring” knowledge onto the childs flower (his mind) and helping it bloom and grow. On the second, we have two children interacting with each other, they are seemingly completely different but still get on.  And on the last board, there is another teacher playing a game with a student, at Muritai we enjoy sport, so of course we had to incorporate it!   If you step back and look at all three murals put together, you can see the two teachers on the outer boards guarding and supporting the students, giving them a safe and healthy environment to learn in.

We are incredibly proud of our work we have done over the past months, and we hope you love it just as much as we do.
