FRIDAY 16 FEBRUARY 2016

Naumai e te whanau o te kura Muritai
Tena koutou katoa

Dear Parents / Caregivers

Welcome to Brita Perez-Benet who has started at Muritai in Room 1 - I'm sure your time at Muritai will be very successful.

SCHOOL LEADERS
We are pleased to announce that for 2016,  Emma Littlefair and Tom Griffiths have been chosen to be our school leaders and they will be supported by Abigail Brownsword and Joshua Toomath. These four students have been excellent role models in their time at Muritai and we are confident they will represent the student group with distinction.
We have some amazingly talented individuals who continually display leadership qualities.  Everyone has the potential to be a leader, whether leading by example, role modeling, are sports captains, working in the main school, providing encouragement or by being given the opportunity to take on any role of responsibility on request.  Leadership doesn’t always come with a title.
YEAR 5 / 6 CAMP - MAKAHIKA
The year 5 and 6 syndicate are heading off to camp in a few weeks time.  The staff and students are looking forward to this new experience.  Information will be coming home with students today.

UNICYCLES
The senior school have a number of unicycles which have been very well used over the years and were looking a little sad.  Justin Bangma has very kindly serviced them all for us and students are out unicycling around the Senior School developing their skills.  A big thank you to Justin of Bang Bikes for all his help.

DREAMWORKS EXHIBITION AT TE PAPA
Yesterday the Y5/6 syndicate visited Te Papa to see the DreamWorks exhibition where the students were able to take a fascinating journey from original sketches through to grumpy ogres and friendly dragons.
The students were able to learn and experience first-hand how stories are developed for an animated film, the design process behind DreamWorks characters and worlds and how modern animation techniques and technologies work.
The students’ absolute favourite part of the exhibition was the ‘virtual’ ride on the back of ‘Toothless the dragon’.  For more information about the exhibition you can visit the following website: http://www.tepapa.govt.nz/WhatsOn/exhibitions/documents/Dreamworks.html
It’s well worth a visit!

MOVIE FUNDRAISER - THE LADY IN THE VAN
We are raising funds for extra learning resources.  Come and enjoy a fabulous movie with us - The Lady in the Van on Monday 29 February, 7.30 for an 8.00pm movie.  Tickets are $20 each and are available from the school office.  To view the trailer, go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlN1b0ok4D0

FREE SUNGLASSES
Visique is giving away free sunglasses to new entrant students for the12th year in a row. Muritai  School has been given vouchers for these free sunglasses. Simply take the voucher with your child to Visique City to be fitted.  Visique also looks after the eye health and vision of older students, visit Visique Petone at 245 Jackson Street to find out more.

READING EGGS
Learning to read is one of the most important skills children can learn.  Reading Eggs makes the learning to read journey fun, interactive, and highly rewarding for ages 3-13 – and it’s based on solid scientific research.
Reading Eggs supports your child’s learning to read with carefully designed on-line reading games and activities that are easy to follow, self-paced and highly engaging for learners.
If you would like your child to subscribe to this, please send along an envelope with your child’s name and room number together with $22 to the school office before Friday 26 February.  The subscription lasts for a year, ending in February 2017.  If you would like further information, please contact Maureen Buckley via e-mail (buckley@muritai.school.nz)

LUCKY BOOK CLUB
The first issue for the year is out now. Each term Scholastic put out two catalogues that provide a wide range of books and activities for all year groups. Orders can be placed online, or by filling in the form in the catalogue and returning it to the school office by the close off date.  Books are sent to the school and handed out to the students usually a week after the close off date.

We are very thankful for your support of using the Lucky Book Club, as each order means our school is awarded points, allowing us to purchase new books for our school library.
Scholastic offer a very user friendly website if you wish to view catalogues online: http://www.scholastic.co.nz/schools/bookclub/clubs/student.php (this link will take you directly to the catalogues page).
If you wish to use the online ordering system please go to: https://mybookclub.scholastic.co.nz/
Your order information is provided to the school so you are not required to send back any forms.

If you wish to use the catalogue paper form please ensure your child's name and classroom number is filled in to help us with delivery of books. Payments can be made by cheque (made out to scholastic nz) or by credit card only.  Unfortunately we cannot accept payments of cash.  Issue one orders need to be returned to the office by Friday the 4th of March.

CARNIVAL 2014 TEAM
For the last couple of Carnivals we have had a fantastic team lead the organisation of this event.  This year we need a new energetic and enthusiastic group of people to run this event.  The last team put together a comprehensive manual to keep it simple.  Each Carnival makes approximately $50/60,000 and is therefore an extremely important fundraiser for the school.  The last Carnival donation paid for our new pods of MacBook Airs and IPads for student learning, with previous donations being for our library which is now up and running.

If you are interested in being part of this team, please let Jo or Carole in the office know.  Without your help there will be no Carnival this year!
