MASK MAKING
On Tuesday we had 18 students out at HRSA Athletics - the perfect opportunity to do some mask making with our remaining students!
The goal: To create an African themed mask entirely out of paper & card using our class success criteria & three paper techniques (fringing, curling, spirals, pleating, chains, fanning, folding for symmetrical shapes).
The process....

YEAR 5 AND 6 MAKAHIKA CAMP
The Year 5 & 6s are off to camp in 12 days!  Just a few reminders for you...The cost per child for camp this year is $235. Payment for camp needs to be made to the school office before camp week. If you have any issues with making this payment please contact the school office or your classroom teacher as soon as possible.  It would also be advantageous for you to begin collecting all of the things from the 'camp gear list' that are needed.

ICAS
Letters were recently emailed out to parents with forms for the up-coming ICAS exams.  If your child would like to take part in any of these exams, please ensure you complete the form and return to the office no later than Thursday 14 April.  Extra forms are available in the office.  Unfortunately there will be no late entries as the school has to order the exams at this time.

HOT DOGS VOLUNTEERS
The Home and School Committee would like to offer hot dogs again for the children every Wednesday during Terms 2 and 3.  This is a very popular fundraiser for the school.  All of the proceeds go directly to the school benefiting our children.  The children love getting their economical hot lunch every Wednesday ($3).

In order for us to offer this option, we need parent volunteers.  Last year, volunteers were only on duty one or two times per term.  Being on duty is very simple.  There are detailed instructions, and volunteers with less experience are partnered with someone who has done it before.  The time commitment is minimal from 11:30am to 1:30pm.

If you would be willing to volunteer during Terms 2 and 3, please see Carole or Jo in the school office .   Unfortunately, if we don't have enough volunteers, we will not be able to continue this important fundraising event for our children.

AFTER SCHOOL CARE
After school care has a selection of awesome activities this term.  Activities will rotate every 3-4 weeks to give all children the opportunity to try everything.  All children are given the option of free play and the use of a selection of games, craft materials and sports equipment, etc if they do not wish to participate in a planned activity.
Activities include:
Sports - Each week we will have one day dedicated to Sports. Children are free to play sports any day but on this day for 3 or 4 weeks we will focus on the same sport with some fun games and drills planned to help build skills and improve technique.
Indoor/Outdoor Games - One day each week we will have specially planned indoor / outdoor games that are fun, challenging and sometimes just a little crazy!
Hands On – This will run on the same 2 days as the Sports Programme and Indoor / Outdoor games day and will include general activities such as cooking and crafts that can be done in one session.
Special Project - These will include activities that run on the same day over 3 or 4 weeks.  This will take place on the 3 days we do not have ‘Sports / Hands On / Indoor / Outdoor Games.  Special Projects this term are:
·       Wool craft – Make a dream catcher or funky felted wool wrist bands.
·       Recycled Paper – Make your own paper pulp, press it and dry it then put it to use with some cool creations.
·       Mad Science – Great fun science based activities each week.
Special Projects coming up next term will be:
·       Wood work skills – Upcycling old pallets.
·       Driftwood craft - Making mirrors and candle holders.
·       Detective skills – Create a secret identity and personal detective kit.

Contact Mel at masc@muritai.school.nz if you would like your child to participate in any of the fun things we have planned or if you have any ideas for activities you would like to see happening at MASC.
