FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome to ‘Power to the People’, our most popular suggestion for our school newsletter name!
We may change the name around from time to time, and look forward to having some fun with our newsletter ‘brand’.

I hope you’ve been enjoying the Summer weather! We’ve certainly been making the most of being outdoors here at school, on trips and especially in the pool.

With the sun out we’ve seen an increase in the amount of children scootering and cycling to school - it’s important to model correct behaviour as far as road laws in parking, crossing the road and biking around our school community.  Please help us to remind and model to the children ways to keep themselves safe, and this includes the NZ Transport Rules for cycling.  Check out this useful website which reminds us:
  • Cycle helmets must: be worn; meet an approved standard and be securely fastened.
  • Cycles must have brakes and reflectors.
  • Cycle lights must be on when it's dim or dark.
  • Doubling is not allowed unless there is a special seat called a pillion fitted and there are footrests for the passenger. The legs of small children must be protected from the wheels. Passengers must wear cycle helmets.

We encourage cycling, scootering and being active, please let’s remember these rules to keep us all safe too.

Lastly from me - a wee peek inside our past few weeks at Muritai...https://youtu.be/IYDYauTxu4o

Kind regards

SCHOOL LEADERS 2017
Our heartfelt congratulations go out today to our fabulous new team of school leaders for 2017.

It was an exceptionally tough job to choose from the multitude of wonderful applications we received and we are already impressed with the leadership shown by all the members of the Senior School over our first few weeks.

Looks like we are in for a very promising year!

Head Boy:  Angus Flynn     Deputy:  Oscar Zuijderwijk
Head Girl:  Millie Watkins    Deputy:  Lily Sambrooke

ICAS AND GREAT KIWI COMPETITION EXAMS
Although we have traditionally offered students the opportunity to participate in the ICAS exams, this year there is another option: The annual CEM Great Kiwi Science, English and Mathematics competitions.
These tests are organised by The Centre for Evaluation & Monitoring at the University of Canterbury.  They are skills based and designed by New Zealand teachers for New Zealand students.  As a result, they more closely align with with our New Zealand Curriculum.
The competitions cater for students of all abilities in primary, intermediate and secondary educa

tion and measure the performance of students in each curriculum area.
We are keen to explore these as an alternative option to the ICAS exams in future, so for this year we will be offering the choice of both.  We would welcome your feedback (borgonje@muritai.school.nz) around this to inform our decisions for next year.

Notices for both these competitions will be coming home today.  Please complete and return them to the office before the dates mentioned on each notice.  Late entries will not be accepted for either competition.

SENSORY GARDEN
Our planned sensory garden has now come to fruition. It is situated on the field beside the STEAM room and is ready for everyone to enjoy. It has been planted with a variety of plants especially chosen to incorporate each of the five senses. Special thanks to Kate Brownsword for the design, planting and donation of the plants and to the MENZ shed for the construction of the garden box.

READING EGGS AND READING EGGSPRESS
It is now time to renew or take out subscriptions to Reading Eggs and Reading Eggspress. These programmes are for students aged three years old through to thirteen and make learning to read and spell interesting by engaging them in fun online games and activities that build on each child's individual successes. The students really enjoy the games, songs, collecting golden eggs and other rewards along the way as they feel proud of their achievements and are motivated to keep improving their learning. If you would like a subscription for your child or children please send along $30 to the school office before Friday March 10th. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Maureen Buckley.

Yoga offers children a form of movement and physicality that can be athletic or gentle but non-competitive. It builds strength, balance and flexibility. It teaches mindfulness in stillness ( I always include some quiet meditation in class) and mindfulness in action. The yoga teachings include principles of compassion for self and others, discipline and self-study. Kids' yoga classes are playful, imaginative and age-appropriate weaving games, song and story in the practice of the poses.

EASTBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB 2017 SEASON – REGISTRATIONS NOW OPEN
The Eastbourne FC welcomes all returning players and those new to the club to register for the 2017 winter season which will kick-off on Saturday 1st April.  Registrations for all grades from First Kicks to Masters can be completed online on at www.efc.org.nz from now until the Monday 20th February.  More information on grades and their formats can also be found on our website, or if you are unsure please send us an email at info@efc.org.nz
*** Important information for those wishing to play in Premier League teams
Last year we successfully formed an alliance with the Stop Out Sports Club, whereby both Clubs worked together to field combined teams for Junior players that wished to play in the Junior Premier Leagues (10th grade and above).  We will continue with the alliance again this season, with players chosen for Premier League teams through a series of trials.  There will be three trials which each player wishing to play in a Premier League team will need to attend.  Trial dates have been confirmed, however we are still to confirm times with Stop Out.  Dates are as follows:
  1. Sunday, 12th February
  2. Tuesday 14th to Thursday 16th February (early evening) – different grades will trial on different nights.
  3. Saturday 18th or Sunday 19th February
Please note Eastbourne/Stop Out Alliance teams require an extra commitment from both players and parents (e.g. two trainings per week, travelling further afield to matches which are played anywhere in the Wellington region (including the Kapiti Coast) rather than the Hutt Valley only, and additional costs for extra junior development coaching and various tournaments).  If your son or daughter wishes to trial for a Premier League please ensure you tick the box on the registration form, and email info@efc.org.nz so we can ensure you receive the trial times when they are confirmed.

ERFC Registration
Get down to Eastbourne Rugby Club on 2 March. Meet the Hurricanes players and registers for 2017!  Or register now at www.playrugby.co.nz
