FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Tena koutou katoa, warm greetings to you all

It's been a wonderful start back to our final term of 2107, with the weather warming up and summer sports getting underway.  We look forward to athletics happening on Monday the 30th October with weather conditions looking favourable for a great day of outdoor fun and competition.
MADE Awards
One celebration I must share with you is hearing the news that 8 of our students have been named as finalists in the national Movie and Digital Excellence (MADE) Awards!

Congratulations to our finalists - there are only 5 finalists nationwide across each age group, so we are feeling very proud to have been so successful.

Creative Digital Image photography finalists:
Finlay Lewis - “Metal Marks”
George Saunderson - “Basking in the Sun”
Tilly Saunderson - “I Spy in the Sky”
Ruby Fenwick - “Stepping Out”
Bella Diamond - “Follow the Yellow Brick Road”
Zac Walker - “Skylight”

Commercial finalist:
Room 11 - "Kick Booing into Touch"

Documentary Finalist:
Luke Butler - “Final Onesie Documentary”

The awards evening held in Tauranga is coming up at the end of week 4, so we will certainly let you know how our finalists go! Good luck to all.
2018 Classes
At this time of year we begin the the intricate and delicate science of collating the 2018 classes.  This involves the advertising for teaching positions, communication with outside specialist agencies, talking with current teachers and listening to the voices of all stakeholders - including parent voice.

Although at Muritai we do not take parent requests for class placements, if you have some information you think we would find useful about your child, you are welcome to provide us with this.  In order to ensure the timeframes are met within the process, we ask that any information that you want us to take into account is provided to me over this week - by the 3rd November.  You can email your thoughts to my address below, or call the office should you need to make an appointment. See you at athletics day on Monday, - remember your hats!

Kind regards
Ngā Mihi

FROM THE BOARD
Improving student wellbeing
Community consultation last year indicated concerns about student wellbeing and a desire for better emotional-social support at Muritai.  After discussions with the board, which regards student wellbeing as a priority, teaching staff  interviewed every student 1 on 1 about how safe they feel at Muritai.

While most - 89 percent - did, 11 percent did not, in an emotional sense rather than physically.
Bec Power and Deane Mckay then visited three schools with different approaches: Petone's Wilford School and Porirua's Papakowhai School, which both run the Finnish preventative anti-bullying model KiVa; and Moera's Randwick School which uses a Postive Behaviour 4 Learning model based on restorative justice discussions when things go wrong.

Our senior leadership team is now drawing on different threads to develop a unique "Muritai model" of wellbeing, to add to existing initiatives like peer mediators and kahikatea leaders.

We hope this will be launched at the beginning of 2018, with professional development for staff, and intend to create a deeply supportive school culture for all students that we can all be proud of.
