FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Tena koutou katoa, warm greetings to you all
An enormous thank you to those who were able to join the Board of Trustees and our senior
leadership team  at our Visioning consultation facilitated by Mark Osborne last night.
The Board met following the parent meeting and have planned our next steps forward -
the next step is synthesizing the parent information then going back to our community with
the collated thinking for feedback.
Thank you for sharing your voice to ensure Muritai has an exciting Vision for our children.

After Drop off Walk and Talk

The next Walk and Talk will take place next Tuesday at 9am
Feel free to join me for a chat and a wander around the block, followed by a coffee at
Hive Cafe. Pushchairs welcome, as is skipping the walk and coming straight for a coffee
around 9:30!
Wahine 50th
I am certain you would have been hearing about the Wahine in your household as the
commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Wahine Disaster nears.  It has been a
very special ‘place based’ curriculum focus this term at Muritai School. We have
explored the impact of the Wahine in a wide range of ways across all classes.
We are honoured to be hosting some special events here at school and the students
are preparing for these by learning about the Wahine and the rescue of many survivors
around Eastbourne. You will be able to see the ‘Muritai Museum’ during the Term 1
learning conversations and in the week following these on the 10th -13th of April from
8:30am -3pm.

The Hutt city Mayor has asked to use our school facilities to host a very special event for
those who survived the Wahine many years ago and we are happy to oblige due to such
a significant event.  Please note on the 10th of April, we ask that you assist us with the
later start to the school day of 10am.  We ask this so that the survivors (some of whom
are elderly), and may be returning to Eastbourne for the first time in 50 years, are able to
use the very hall and facilities they may have been rescued and evacuated to.  We want
to ensure a calm, safe environment with adequate parking, for them to take some time
to experience, reflect and remember.

Term 1 Learning Conversations
Please mark your diaries for these which will take place on the 4th and 5th of April.
During your visit, you will also get to have a sneak peek at the Muritai Museum. Booking
information will be emailed out early next week.

Easter Tuesday
Once in a while our Easter break is in the term time, and not in the school holidays.
When this occurs, every state school in New Zealand experiences an additional
day called ‘Easter Tuesday’.  We are not allowed to open on Easter Tuesday, and
so advise Muritai School’s Easter holiday in 2018 is Friday the 30th of March,
Monday the 2nd of April and Tuesday the 3rd of April.

Growth Mindset
At Muritai School we talk a lot about making progress in learning - to improve your
learning, you often need a growth mindset.  Wondering what a growth mindset it?
Check out a great movie to explain Growth Mindset for children

and a fantastic TED Talk by Carol Dweck for older learners

FROM THE SCHOOL

ANZAC Day
The school will again be selling poppies on behalf of RSA NZ this year.  As ANZAC day
falls in the school holidays, poppies will be on sale in the school office on the last day
of school, Friday 13 April.  Bring a gold coin donation to claim your poppy

HOME AND SCHOOL
The Home and School committee are excited to share our fundraising goals with you for this
year. We are focusing our efforts on raising money for the development of the new outdoor
area to replace the old wooden fort playground (specifics to be confirmed). Our aim is to work
towards a target of $15K. We will do this through a variety of fundraisers, such as Pizza
Monday, Disco’s, Cookies and some other exciting things we have planned!  Throughout
the year we may also chose to do specific fundraisers for special reasons. We really appreciate
your support as a school community and without these types of efforts to raise funds our
school would go without. We are also always on the lookout for new committee or friends
of home and school members so if you are interested in joining please get in touch with
Kaye, ksherwin@xtra.co.nz. Thanks again – Home and School.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB
Lucky Book Club issue 2 is now open. Please either fill in the form in the catalogue and
return to school with a cheque made out to Scholastic NZ or go to
https://mybookclub.scholastic.co.nz/Parent/Login.aspx to make an online order.
Orders need to be made by Friday the 6th of April which should allow for delivery of
purchases in the last week of term 1.
Please note that although there is an option to pay cash on the order form we are unable
to process cash orders at Muritai.
Thank you for your continued support.

WINTER CLOTHES DRIVE
Our Charity Ambassadors have organised a Winter clothes drive and are asking for
your help donating clothes for children in need.  Please make sure any clothes you

COMMUNITY NOTICES
Massey University – Child Asthma Study
Massey University is conducting a study looking at the different types of asthma
in children aged 8-18. The aim of the study is to improve the understanding of
childhood asthma and develop better treatment options
for all asthmatics.
The study involves a lung function test and a short questionnaire.
If your child is between 8 and 18 years old, the researchers would be very grateful
if you could take part.
They are looking for children with and without asthma to participate.
Please contact:
Jean Feary McKenzie

Eastbourne Football Club Registrations
Registrations for the Eastbourne FC 2018 season for 7th grade and above are now
closed, however we are looking for one or two more players for the following grades: 7th grade,
9th grade and 12th grade.  The year your child turns this year determines which grade they
would be in (i.e. if turn 9 in 2018 then would be in the 9th grade).  If you are keen to play in
any of these grades (or First Kicks which is for 4 to 6 year olds) and haven’t registered yet
please let us know via info@efc.org.nz asap.
