FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Tena koutou Muritai families,

I hope you all had a wonderful Queen’s birthday weekend last weekend - winter has most certainly arrived in Eastbourne this week, and days like today remind us of the ability for the weather to change suddenly! Let’s hope some of this sunshine carries through to the weekend ahead.

Board of Trustees
As our voting has just closed at noon, and we await the final postal votes before announcements can be made next week, I want to acknowledge and thank our current Board of Trustees.  Nigel Cass (Chairperson), Miki Szikszai, Andrew Saunderson, Mary Longmore, Louise Marsden and Deane McKay finish their current trusteeship next week, when the new Board take office on the 14th of June.  It has been my pleasure to work alongside them as trustees over the years, and on behalf of the community I thank them for their care, their commitment and their mahi in enabling Muritai School to grow from strength to strength under their governance.

There is one final meeting for our current board, a social/transition/handover catch up to welcome our new Board into office on the 20th June - our current nominees may like to pencil this date into their calendars.

PB4L
As you would have read in our last newsletter, Muritai School is excited to be part of the PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) initiative offered and funded by the Ministry of Education this year.  PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective.

Our first task was to write our ‘purpose statement’ for PB4L.  We have done this in as a PB4L team, then have gone out for consultation with our full staff and Board of Trustees.  Following this, our PB4L team (Chantel, Dean, Kate, Steph, Michelle, Felicity and myself) have worked through the feedback received, and we now present the purpose statement for parent feedback as the completion of this consultation.
We now invite you to complete this survey as part of our consultation process on our PB4L purpose statement. Your voice is important, as it will determine the PB4L focus for Muritai School.

PB4L Purpose Statement draft:
At Muritai School, we Explore, Connect, and Contribute to develop a school wide culture where we can Be the Best we can Be. We do this by having visible inclusive expectations to ensure our learners thrive as they progress and achieve in our community-centred school.

(The survey link is open for one week - and closes on the 14th June)

Staffing
Next week we farewell Nicolette Fisher as she has won a position at East Harbour Kindergarten.  Nicolette has worked with us for over two years at Muritai, starting as a beginning teacher, and is now transitioning to the Kindy as a fully certified teacher.  We wish Nicolette well for her move down the road, and although we are sorry to lose Nicolette, we are excited - along with the Kindy, as to the opportunity this offers our wider school community to further boost our connection between Kindy and School.   Room 2 will continue to be taught by Liz Sullivan, who takes over the main teaching role, supported by Margs Mills.

The junior syndicate will farewell Nicolette at their junior assembly on Tuesday afternoon.

Generous Donation to Muritai School

We have such an amazing community at Muritai school! One of our very generous families won a laptop in a recent competition.  They have decided to anonymously donate the computer to another family who may be in need of a laptop and who possibly don’t have the means to purchase one at this time.  If you would like to nominate a school student, school family who may be in this position (you are welcome to nominate yourself) please email me by the 21st June with the details at Principal@Muritai.school.nz

Ngā manaakitanga,

Bec Power, Principal

FROM THE SCHOOL

Strike for Climate Change
“2 4 6 8 SAVE THE EARTH IT’S NOT TOO LATE!”
On May 24 2019 we, Nicolas Walcott and Cameron Johns, participated in the Wellington Climate Change March.
“We felt like we had to march on parliament to get the government to do something.”
“It was very crowded marching but I felt like we achieved something.”
We learnt that we only have 12 years to act before our actions will do nothing to stop climate. These are the things you can do to help to stop climate change:
  • Get an electric car.
  • Get a hybrid(half petrol half electric) car.
  • Pick up plastic.
  • Vote for people who care about the environment.
  • Drive less
  • Ride a bike.
  • Use public transport.
  • Use renewable-eco friendly power.
  • Try not to buy plastic.
  • Stop idling.
  • Don't litter.
  • Donate money to organizations that care about the environment.
  • Support the environment
