FRIDAY 22 NOVEMBER 2019

Kia Ora, Talofa Lava, Greetings, Malo e Lelei, Kia Orana, Bonjour, Nǐ hǎo, Hallo, Hola, Kon'nichiwa, Namaste, As-salāmu ʿalaykum

A warm welcome to Emma Gellatly and Eddie Evans to Room 1.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Tena koutou Muritai families,

Bangers and Maths
We were incredibly surprised and delighted by the amount of parents and students who attended our Maths evening last week.  Our school hall was bursting at the seams, and our BBQ chefs were sizzling sausages as quickly as they could! We have had great feedback following the evening too, which tells us that this sort of evening is useful for parents to get updates around new ways of teaching and learning in different focus areas. Our focus on Mathematics this year as a staff was briefly explained on the evening : mathematical discourse, rich mathematical tasks, integrating mathematics, groupings for teaching and collaboration.  After the session in the hall the fun had in classrooms was superb! Thank you all for getting involved and learning some new maths games alongside your children.  We will hold further parent meetings in 2020 including another maths evening.   I will also create a video of some of the key points for anyone who was unable to make it on the night for our website.

Thank you for your support and interest in our teaching and learning at Muritai School, it’s a big effort for teachers and our Maths team to put on an evening like our ‘Bangers and Maths’ and it feels so rewarding when we get the attendance and feedback we received.  I hope you are enjoying your maths games packs for home learning - if you did not get a games pack for your family, please pop in and ask at our office as we have a few left over.

We have once again had enormous success at the national school awards for media and digital excellence (MADE).

Health Consultation 2019 (- still open for another week)
At least once every two years, boards of trustees are required to produce a written statement about how the school will implement health education. The legislation requires schools to:
- inform the school community about the content of the health education components of the curriculum
- consult with members of the school community regarding the way in which the school should implement health education
- describe, in broad terms, the health education needs of the school's students.

Following the consultation in 2017 we made significant changes to our programme and created a streamlined 2 year overview of Health, PE, Sport and EOTC.  Please follow the link below to see our odd and even year overview and to add any thoughts for our consideration for 2020 and 2021’s programmes in this important curriculum area.

Playspace Update
All of our ‘Playspace design Model’ finalists are now being housed in the library. You are more than welcome to come and see them. The library is open throughout each day and after school most days till 3.15pm.
During next week the final judging will take place - selecting aspects, parts or even whole designs that will actually be passed onto the playground experts and then built in the new year!

Ngā manaakitanga,

Bec Power, Principal

COMMUNITY NOTICES

Hutt City Libraries Summer Reading Challenge 2019-20

·         International research shows the 'summer slide' (where reading gains slip over the long summer holidays) is a major barrier to ongoing literacy achievement
·         Tamariki who have access to books and learning experiences during the long holidays show less of a decrease (or even an improvement!) in their reading levels when they return to kura/school
·         The Big Read motivates tamariki to read books and participate in activities. Our friendly librarians are always available to provide support

Any child aged 0-12 years can sign up for the challenge at any of our eight Hutt City Libraries from 1 December.

The entire whānau can join in, this year we have The Little Read for ages 0-5 years; The Big Read for ages 5-12; and Explore, Read, Relax for rangatahi and adults. It’s a great way to support your child’s reading and help them maintain the reading achievements they have made throughout the school year, even while on holiday!

More details at library.huttcity.govt.nz and at all Hutt City Libraries.

2020 Classes
Thank you for all of the parent feedback and information that you have provided regarding our class placement consultation period for the 2020 classes.  We are now underway in the creation of our class makeups.  If your child will not be with us in 2020, please let us know asap.  We are trying to place at least one friend alongside each child and need to ensure we have the correct number of children in each room as we design the classes - similarly, if you are intending to enrol another child with us, please do enrol them asap so that we can ensure we have enough teachers!

We have also finished our recruitment for 2020 and have our teaching teams introduced below.  These are of course our classroom teachers only, not our entire teaching staff.

Our 2020 teaching teams are as follows:

Kororā (Year 0-2)
Jess Richards
Kea Maritz
Marzena Simpson
Nadia Henderson
Alison Furminger

Tūī (Year 3-4)
Holli Willams/Jamie Power
Kate McLean
Kelly Williams
Michelle Hollard/Jess Davidson

Kererū (Year 4-6)
Felicity Lovell
Greer Dalziel
Alice Daykin-Pont
Conor Burke

Kāhu (Year 7-8)
Jon Mackie/Ruth Hooke
Kate Salisbury
Amy Newman

You will spot three new teachers in our teaching teams - Nadia, Conor and Amy.  We are excited to introduce these fantastic teachers to you and they are all very excited to be coming to Muritai School next year.  With three new arrivals that must mean that we have three departures -  next year Deane McKay is taking a year’s leave to explore teaching in the Northern Territories of Australia with a focus on working with indigenous children. We wish Deane all the very best as he provides some much needed experience and educational service in this area. We farewell Steph Lamborn who is moving to the UK to travel and teach overseas  and lastly Chantel Lyons is pleased to announce a ‘baby Lyon' will be joining the Muritai family early next year, and Chantel has taken the majority of 2020 off as parental leave.

Ngā manaakitanga,

Bec Power, Principal

FROM THE BOARD

Just a quick note from the Board of Trustees to let you know we have decided not to opt-in to the School Donation scheme that the Government is introducing next year.

Whilst the scheme is for all schools, it is only decile 1-7 schools that will receive funding from Government of up to $150 per child as long as parents and caregivers are not asked for donations.

As a decile 10 school we are not eligible for this funding. As most will know our school donations are an important part of resourcing and enabling Muritai learners to be the best they can be.

If anyone is interested in more information there was a stuff article about it recently: https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/education/115519668/scrapping-school-donations-closer-as-government-clarifies-rules

Thanks, Muritai School BOT.

SPORT
Summer Netball
This term we have three netball teams playing at Taita Courts for the next 6 weeks. They are two weeks in and loving it. Thanks to Jane Llyod-Evans for kick starting this and giving more children the opportunity to play Netball!

Touch Rugby
Wow what a start to the season! Our first game was last week with the majority of the teams having a win on the board. The children are loving it. We have 118 children playing, so over a quarter of the school! It's great to see all the Muritai school sports uniforms dominating the view at Hutt Park on a Friday night.

Athletics
This week was our Inter School Athletics competition. Muritai had 81 students qualify and ready to set their mark against the other schools in the zone.

The day was not as bright as we would have liked it, a lot of cloud cover overhead and a LOT of wind. With all this to deal with our students still excelled with 52 qualifying for the Inter Zone competition which will be held on Tuesday 19th November at Hutt Rec. Attached arel the students that qualified and their results which is something to be proud of.

Thanks to all the parents that came along and helped on the day. We will need you again on the 19th!!
