FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Tena
koutou Muritai families,
Bangers and Maths
We
were incredibly surprised and delighted by the amount of parents and students
who attended our Maths evening last week. Our school hall was bursting at
the seams, and our BBQ chefs were sizzling sausages as quickly as they could!
We have had great feedback following the evening too, which tells us that this
sort of evening is useful for parents to get updates around new ways of
teaching and learning in different focus areas. Our focus on Mathematics this
year as a staff was briefly explained on the evening : mathematical discourse,
rich mathematical tasks, integrating mathematics, groupings for teaching and
collaboration. After the session in the hall the fun had in classrooms
was superb! Thank you all for getting involved and learning some new maths
games alongside your children. We will
hold further parent meetings in 2020 including another maths evening. I will also create a video of some of the
key points for anyone who was unable to make it on the night for our
website.
Thank
you for your support and interest in our teaching and learning at Muritai
School, it’s a big effort for teachers and our Maths team to put on an evening
like our ‘Bangers and Maths’ and it feels so rewarding when we get the
attendance and feedback we received. I hope you are enjoying your maths
games packs for home learning - if you did not get a games pack for your
family, please pop in and ask at our office as we have a few left
over.

Health Consultation 2019 (- still open for another week)
At
least once every two years, boards of trustees are required to produce a
written statement about how the school will implement health education. The
legislation requires schools to:
-
inform the school community about the content of the health education
components of the curriculum
-
consult with members of the school community regarding the way in which the
school should implement health education
-
describe, in broad terms, the health education needs of the school's students.
Following
the consultation in 2017 we made significant changes to our programme and
created a streamlined 2 year overview of Health, PE, Sport and EOTC.
Please follow the link below to see our odd and even year overview and to add
any thoughts for our consideration for 2020 and 2021’s programmes in this
important curriculum area.
Playspace Update
All of our ‘Playspace design Model’ finalists are now being
housed in the library. You are more than welcome to come and see them. The
library is open throughout each day and after school most days till 3.15pm.
During next week the final judging will take place -
selecting aspects, parts or even whole designs that will actually be passed
onto the playground experts and then built in the new year!

Hats
We have noticed
quite a few children coming to school without their hats. As a Sunsafe
school, we require students to wear wide-brimmed hats whenever they are outside
and involved in school activities and any child without a hat must remain in a
shaded area. Can you please ensure your child brings a named hat to
school during Term 4 and Term 1.

COMMUNITY NOTICES
Hutt City
Libraries Summer Reading Challenge 2019-20
·
International research shows the 'summer slide' (where reading
gains slip over the long summer holidays) is a major barrier to ongoing
literacy achievement
·
Tamariki who have access to books and learning experiences during
the long holidays show less of a decrease (or even an improvement!) in their
reading levels when they return to kura/school
·
The Big Read motivates tamariki to read books and participate in
activities. Our friendly librarians are always available to provide support
Any child aged
0-12 years can sign up for the challenge at any of our eight Hutt City
Libraries from 1 December.
The entire
whānau can join in, this year we have The Little Read for ages 0-5 years; The
Big Read for ages 5-12; and Explore, Read, Relax for rangatahi and adults. It’s
a great way to support your child’s reading and help them maintain the reading
achievements they have made throughout the school year, even while on holiday!
More details at
library.huttcity.govt.nz and at all Hutt City Libraries.
