FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Tena koutou Muritai families,

We were delighted to have such a great turn out to our Makahika Camp evening for our Kereru team on Tuesday evening. Thank you all who came out on such a dreadful evening weather wise! I know Sally the director and owner of Makahika kept us all well informed (and entertained!) as she explained the additional measures she and her team have put in place for our year 5-6 school camp to go ahead at Alert Level 2 in Week 9.

We have our fingers and toes crossed for our Masked Parade going ahead in Week 10 on the 23rd of September - if the Alert levels do not allow us to host the event as planned, we will provide some alternatives to view and appreciate all of the hard work that has gone into our masks and planned performances.

Thanks also to those who attended our online ‘Starting School at 5’ evening on Wednesday night.  We hosted this meeting online after being unable to host the face to face meeting for the past two terms due to Alert levels, and it was a great success.  If you missed the session and have a 5 year old starting with us in term 4, there will be a repeat of the session next Wednesday (9th September) at 9:30am.  Check your emails for details or contact jrichards@muritai.school.nz for an electronic invitation.

I was saddened to hear recently of the passing of one of Education's most loved authors, advisors and commentators, Sir Ken Robinson.  He said out loud what we as educators always wondered about around education and schooling.  He was certainly well received - the first TED talk I’ve linked here has had over 67 million views, and is as relevant today as it was when recorded in 2006. Sir Ken Robinson: Do schools kill creativity?  You may remember the TED talk we added to the parent consultation survey earlier this term, Sir Ken’s talk on Changing Educational Paradigms: RSA ANIMATE: Changing Education Paradigms, they are certainly both worth a watch.

As Alert Level 2 continues on I know the extra measures to life may seem tiresome.  I want to thank all of the staff for their constant messaging ensuring hygiene routines followed, the extra duties we’ve all picked up in the classrooms each day from 8:15, and at the gates for sign-in/out.  Thank you to all of our parents and caregivers who are daily either waiting outside the gates, or carefully signing in by highlighting their name at the provided stations.   Thank you also for providing masks to those children who travel on buses, and ensuring they are set up for success with the equipment that is now required. I continue to be grateful to you all for the combined efforts in keeping us all safe and well in these unusual times.

Kāhore taku toa i te toa takitahi, he toa takitini - We cannot succeed without the support of those around us.

Ngā manaakitanga,

Bec Power, Principal
