FRIDAY 19 AUGUST 2022

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Naumai, Haere Mai, Welcome

Despite this current wet weather, it has been great to be out and about in our community once again. Students from Team Kororā have been exploring our local beach searching for different rocks that will be part of an art project while other classes from around our school have been visiting Eastbourne Library.

The weather has provided motivation for some wonderful poetry done by our Year 2 students in Room 5. Here are two of them for you to enjoy.

Our thoughts are with the families and staff, both current and past of San Antonio School on their imminent closure at the end of this year. This is a sad time for everyone, especially having been part of our community for eighty six years.

MURITAI SCHOOL ART EXHIBITION - ART ATTACK

Excitement is building as the students are busily preparing art works based on our current inquiry “To Infinity and Beyond” to share with you. Tickets $5 for adults available at the school office.

 CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to Izzy Longson, Tayla Pretorius and Elodie Dent from Year 7 who, after many dedicated months of very cold, early Saturday mornings have passed their Whistlers netball umpiring course and exam. They showed great commitment and maturity studying with older students and adults alike. We look forward to you sharing your knowledge with our younger students next term and perhaps even testing your skills in the upcoming, much anticipated, teachers versus students netball match!

125th CELEBRATION 2023

The date for this wonderful celebration has been set - it is Friday March 24th and Saturday March 25th so please mark your diaries now and register your interest on the form accessible from our website. An exciting programme is being planned so that trips down memory lane can occur along with everyone invited to see our school in action. Please let me know if you wish to be part of the committee that is organising this or just join us in the staffroom on September 15th at 4 p.m. at the next meeting.

SCHOOL ASSEMBLY

Today the Kererū Team hosted our school assembly and showcased some of the wonderful learning that has been taking place in their area of the school. This fabulous artwork was shared by Room 9. They have created this based on the work of Jen Stark, a Los Angeles based artist known for her brightly coloured public murals, many of which feature drip like forms.

Room 9 also shared this maths problem with us. Can you solve it? There are over 100 different ways - how many can you do?

Room 10 has been learning about the work of Hundertwasser. These are some of the amazing artworks that were also shared today.

CYBER SAFETY

Thank you to those parents who attended the screening of the documentary ‘Our Kids Online’ earlier this week. It was certainly thought provoking. We will be doing a repeat at a later date for those of you who missed it.

ROAD SAFETY

With continued absences of both adults and students it has been increasingly difficult to get continued cover for our crossing on Muritai Road. If you are able to assist please contact Jess Richards jrichards@muritai.school.nz

On another note, complaints from the police and bus company have been received about double parking on Oroua Street. We know it can be very congested, especially in wet weather but please ensure you park in the correct spaces. Our students' safety is paramount.

KAPA HAKA

Students from across our school are taking part in Kapa Haka in the hall with Whaea Hilary and Ruth Hooke. Parents and whānau are very welcome to join them in the hall each Wednesday morning from 8.30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Our performance group is going from strength to strength each week as they prepare for performances at Hutt Fest and Eastbourne Library later this term, which is very exciting.

HOME AND SCHOOL NEWS

Thank you to those of you who purchased the amazing cookbook. Our local Eastbourne library has also purchased one that will be available for borrowing. A second copy is going to the archives in Petone which is very exciting. Details of the next fundraisers involving sunhats and Pizza Mondays will follow shortly.

LOOKING AHEAD TO TERM 4

There will be a Teacher Only Day on Friday 21st October adjoining Labour Weekend so mark your diaries for a four day weekend.

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2023

If your child/ren is leaving Muritai School at the end of this year, can you please email either me buckley@muritai.school.nz or Jo bentley@muritai.school.nz to let us know as soon as possible as we are about to begin planning for classes and staffing?

Have a wonderful weekend with your family and friends. Spring is just around the corner.

Room 3 had a wonderful morning out and about in Eastbourne yesterday! We donned our raincoats and gumboots and braved the rain for a fabulous visit to Kindy. The child really enjoyed re-connecting with the kindergarten environment, teachers and children. Afterwards we heading to the library for a lovely story time with Barbara. The children also had a chance to explore and select their own books!   We will welcome students from both kindergarten and Barnardos back into our school for a visit for the first time this year.

DAFFODIL DAY - TAUTOKO TE RĀ DAFFODIL
Our Year 7 and 8 Charity Ambassadors have organised the annual ‘Daffodil Day’ appeal. Donations of a gold coin brought to school by your child next Friday August 26th will be exchanged for a daffodil to be pinned on them. All proceeds raised go to supporting the Cancer Society.

MICROWAVE
Does anyone have a microwave that they are willing to donate to us to use in the hall kitchen? If so, please contact Carole lowe@muritai.school.nz

SPARE PAINT
Do you have any paint (suitable for use outdoors) that you don’t need any longer and would like to donate it to our school? It can be small amounts including test pots. The students are doing a range of activities to help beautify areas around our school and we need some different colours to do this. If you have any please contact me regarding the colours that we need. buckley@muritai.school.nz

LOST PROPERTY
Current lost property will be displayed outside for collection next week. Any items that are not claimed by Friday August 26th will be given away. I am also looking for parents who are willing to work alongside Sue in the library to help send clothing back to the correct students. If you can help out please contact me buckley@muritai.school.nz

CAN YOU HELP?
We have some bean bags in our library that need to be refilled. We have the beans but need someone to physically fill them? If you can do this please contact Sue in the library fieldes@muritai.school.nz
