Tena koutou te whānau o te kura Muritai.
Dear Parents / Caregivers
A big welcome to Emma Miller in Room 1 who has started at Muritai in the last fortnight.
School ProductionThe school has been a hive of activity as staff and students busily choreograph and rehearse performances in preparation for this term's school production. Although many of our students are natural performers there are some students who will find performing to a live audience both challenging and exhausting. Staff are working very hard to ensure all 400 students have their time on stage. This is most easily achieved with group performances working together to tell a story. A quick acknowledgement to Kirsten Berry who is this year's Production Director for her excellent leadership and outstanding organisation. If you have yet to purchase tickets I recommend you get in quickly as we only have a limited number of performances. To purchase tickets please see Sue and Carole in the office - Adults $7.50, Seniors and Children $5.00 and Pre-schoolers $3.00. Finally a big thank you to all those who have either offered or who have been assisting teachers in preparing sets, backdrops and costumes.
Staffing
Sarah Drinkwater is off on maternity leave at the end of next week. We wish her and her husband Dougs the very best of luck for the safe arrival of their first born. Taking over from Sarah in Room 9 will be Jess Savage. To help Jess settle in to her new role she will be working alongside Sarah from next week to learn routines and get to know the children. We are all looking forward to meeting Jess and would ask that you all welcome her to Muritai.
ArtSplash and DanceSplash
Recently we had a large number of our Y4-6 students involved in either the ArtSplash or DanceSplash performances. These shows are held every year at the Michael Fowler Centre and provide a wonderful opportunity for students to be involved in the performing arts together with other schools in the Wellington area. A huge thank you to Ruth Hooke for her continued dedication and hard work putting together these fantastic performances. A special thanks also to our former student teacher Sabeshan Gnanan for all his inspiration and expertise in choreographing and teaching the Bollywood item performed at DanceSplash.
Cycling Safety
Finally, a quick reminder about cycle safety for our students. It would be greatly appreciated if you were able to take some time to talk to your child/children about cycle safety and the dangers presented when biking on the footpath. Recently we have had a number of near accidents with cars coming out of driveways and pedestrians having to jump out of the way as students cycle to and from school on the footpath. Children old enough to use the road should do so or, if using the footpath, they need to slow down and take greater care considering possible dangers and people using the footpath.

YEAR 5/6 SOCIAL INQUIRY
Last week the Year 5 and 6 Team invited some speakers to assist them with their social inquiry process. On Wednesday Nancy Barclay explained how she was involved in the process of widening the footpath between Windy Point and Days Bay. They learned about the need for consultation between different groups in the community. On Thursday two members of the Eastbourne Community Board, Derek and Ian shared their plans to upgrade the village. The Year 5 and 6 students discovered that plans take a lot of time and cost a lot of money before they become reality.
JUNIOR DUATHLON
JUNIOR DUATHLON
On Monday 16th August the Year 0, 1 and 2’s took part in a Junior Duathlon (run and bike, or scooter). The students were split into year levels and gender race groups.

Once the runners entered back inside Muritai school, Mr. Bird, Mr. Skilton and some parents assisted the children in putting their bike helmets on and giving the students a push start around the muddy bike track.
Students were timed on their race for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place getters, with everyone receiving a participation award. Teachers and spectators were very proud of the positive attitudes we saw on display during and after the event. Well-done Juniors!
