Naumai e te whanau o te kura Muritai
Tena koutou katoa

Dear Parents / Caregivers
We have had an excellent start to the year. The children have settled extremely well into their classes and are very busy already. Finished work is already making its way onto the walls as teachers and children aim to put some 'life' into their classrooms.

The month of February at school is very much focussed on getting systems operational in a classroom and building that class culture. Each year classes are shuffled around to allow different working relationships to form and with a new teacher there is always a 'bedding' in period where everyone needs to get used to each other. Classes explore treaties (just like our Treaty of Waitangi) that set expectations, to enable everyone to do their very best and sets a productive and safe learning and social environment.

At assembly on Friday we spoke about that key value of respecting others, in particular thinking about how we conduct ourselves around others. In particular we talked about greeting, smiling, kind hands, opening doors for adults and a good friend to others and looking after property.

Classes though have settled quickly and are well into the business of learning.

Congratulations to...
Maya Hahn who won the NZ 10 year old 800m title at the Colgate Games in Tauranga in the holidays. An outstanding achievement.

We welcome...

Pearl Tuohy to our school in room 8.  Pearl is a Muritai School old girl and is currently doing her teacher training. Pearl is here for the next 2 weeks.

Our new students since the beginning of term -Eva Medcalf and Isabella Carroll to Room 2 and Clara Archibald to Room 3.

MATHLETICS
As part of our self review processes we are keen to boost the number knowledge of our children. We have identified the Mathletics programme as an excellent support programme for developing number knowledge. We have negotiated an excellent schoolwide deal for 3 years with Mathletics and will be operating this as part of our school programme this year. A normal licence costs $99 but our deal has the cost per child is $20 per year. This will be invoiced to parents with school donation and the activity fee. It is excellent value and equates to just under 40cents a week to have access. Some families have already signed up with Mathletics and they can liaise with 3P at customerservice@3plearning.co.nz around their circumstances.
You can view the Mathletics website here.

HOMEWORK
Muritai School does set homework, mainly around the core skills of reading, spelling and maths. We are very aware that Eastbourne families lead very busy lives and so we are very flexible, and we are so grateful that even with this busyness our children still read every night. With Mathletics in place that leaves spelling and reading. From time to time year 5-8 children will have  additional work set around completing in class assignments or inquiry. This is usually based around the need for extra time required to complete studies in depth and to produce higher quality work.

FACEBOOK
With many parents now on Facebook we are able to share information and school event news via Facebook. You can sign up to Muritai School's facebook page and therefore get regular updates of events.  Clicking here to join
Facebook is not accessible at school.

TEACHERS MEET THE PARENTS
In 2010, we switched the ‘Meet the Teacher’ to a ‘Meet the Parent’ session. The intent of this was to allow parents to share openly everything about their child that might be useful for teachers to know, especially at a time when teachers are getting to know who is in front of them, their interests and their short to mid term learning needs. So, teachers were listening (not doing all the talking.)

Every teacher is determined to get to know each child and you as parents as quickly as we possibly can. We are fully aware that much of this information can be gained directly from the child, but sometimes parents have a different ‘spin’ on it or additional important information. Our next formal contact is at the mid year when we issue learning journeys, written reports and meet to discuss progress.

Parents are most welcome to meet with teachers at any time to discuss progress. Please feel comfortable to do this as we see the home-school partnership as essential for children reaching their potential.

AFTER SCHOOL CARE
We have changed the financial structure around after school care. MASC is not operating before school care this year and is just focusing on after school care and holiday programmes.

Changes see that fees for permanent enrolments must be paid either in full before the children commence the term or by instalments one week in advance. If you would like to use after school care on a casual basis then you can purchase a 5-visit or 10-visit ticket at the school office. After you have purchased a ticket it will be held by the MASC manager, Mel Dowdall, and ticked off as children attend.  Children must be enrolled on a casual basis through Mel a week in advance.
