Dear Parents / Caregivers
As we fast approach the middle of the term the school is going very well. The children have had a great start to the year, they are fully involved in the life of the school and the tone is excellent. The staff are continually commenting on the children's positive attitudes to their work.
Welcome to our new students Harrison Boswell, Cameron Catchpole, Presley Williams.
Despite the incredible value of the swim programmes they do take a chunk out of the school day. Swimming finishes at the end of next week and then classes will be able to really hit their straps for the last few weeks of term.
At Muritai we value the contribution our children make to our school. We need our children to actively contribute to our environment, not just passively receive from it. Every day we appreciate the little things that many of our children do to make this place special. Along with focusing on their studies this can be as simple an action as being a friend to someone who is on their own, smiling and greeting a teacher, letting people pass, allowing others to be in a game, respecting rules or doing one of our required jobs such as road patrol, librarian or peer mediation. Many children show leadership and maturity from an early age and they tend to display a greater understanding of others beyond themselves. As adults it is easy to miss the efforts of our young ones when they think or care for others we must always remember to recognize their efforts as we aim to develop an excellent sense of what is 'business as usual' - or our school culture.

The senior staff have enjoyed the challenging task of identifying our student leadership team this year (and have reflected over time of our oldest children) and their contribution, service and maturity in recent years. Accordingly we have pleasure in announcing Celine Malama and Tom Walsh as our head girl and boy this year and they will be supported by Kia Jewell and Gus Reece as Deputy Head Boy and Girl. All these children have a long history of making a strong contribution and providing mature leadership at Muritai, are well respected by staff and their peers and they will do well in this role.
Celine, Tom, Kia and Gus are also part of the school council comprising of Gabby Turner, Harry Crawford and Oscar Sykes.
We have some amazingly talented individuals who are continually promoting and displaying leadership qualities. Everyone has the potential to be a leader, whether they are leading by example, role modeling, are sports captains, working in the main school, providing encouragement or by being given the opportunity to take on any role of responsibility on request. Leadership doesn’t always come with a title.
The prestigious house captains role this year are: King – Hailey Griffiths and Xavier Manson

RED AND BLACK DAY
Thank you to everyone who brought in a gold coin donation last Wednesday for the Red and Black day. I am sure you all enjoyed dressing up too. I know I certainly did. It was great you made the effort. Because of your donations, we managed to raise $300 for Sumner School in Christchurch. Hopefully they can put this towards something lovely... we all know they deserve a little treat after the year they have had.

On Friday Mr McKay took a Muritai team to be part of the year 6 fastest school relay event as part of the St Pats Silverstream track meet. The relay involved 5 students (3 boys and 2 girls) each running separate distances e.g. 800m, 400m, 200m, and 2 x 100m. The enjoyable and challenging event saw Muritai come in in 2nd place, just behind the winners Silverstream School. Well done our team of Jack, Macey, Liam, Georgia and Robbie.

Plunket Appeal Week,5 - 11 March 2012
Do you have or have had a Plunket baby? Have you reaped the benefits of our wonderful nurse and have you and your children enjoyed the friendships that come from the PIN groups?
Our main fundraising event is coming up very soon. We are looking for some wonderful volunteers to help us with our collecting during the Appeal Week. We also need more co-ordinators to ensure that we have everywhere in Eastbourne covered.
The money that is collected will remain for the use of the Eastbourne Plunket Branch and thus benefit all the pre-school children in Eastbourne. Obviously many hands make light work, so the more volunteers we have the better.
If you can’t help out, please look out for our collectors during the Appeal week. Please give Michelle a call if you can help on 04 562 8877.
