FROM THE PRINCIPAL

The cooler weather has arrived and with it, many extra jackets and warm extras are being worn to school - and our lost property is overflowing! Please make sure you have all clothes worn to school named and then if misplaced we can return it to the children, if not, we cannot! Please do pop in and check our many bins of clothing if you are missing an item at home.

Support Staff Day
On Wednesday we celebrated Support Staff Day here at Muritai School.  Our support staff are such an important part of our organization, who make our lives, and the lives of our learners brighter every day.
We acknowledged them with a treat for morning tea on Wednesday made by our local HIVE cafe, https://www.facebook.com/hivecafe/ and beautiful buttonholes made by Floret - Flowers by Mel Halford https://www.facebook.com/flowersbymelhalford/

Staffing Update
At the end of term we will farewell Christa Pitman (our Friday teacher in Room 8) who we congratulate as she has won a full time position at Wellesley.  Lisa Allen will be working in Room 8 on Fridays in Term 3 and 4.

We will also farewell Carolyn Murphy who works in our support staff team as a literacy support.  Carolyn has won another local position and we wish her well in her new adventure!

We thank Christa and Carolyn for their time and dedication to our students at Muritai school, and as locals, know that they’ll stay in touch!

All Blacks Tribute
Did you happen to see the very popular movie on our Facebook page? Deane McKay and a group of our students prepared a dedication to the AB’s for this weekend - https://www.facebook.com/MuritaiSchool/
It’s an absolute must watch, featuring some special Eastbourne landmarks!

WHAT NOW?! Reminder:
During the afternoon of the 22nd June we are hosting WHAT NOW at Muritai.  Feel free to come down in the afternoon for the gauntlet challenge, which will see the the house leaders match up against the staff team - trials have occurred and training is in place for the staff, it is certain to be a must see! When I know the time that the gauntlet is likely to occur, I will post the details on our school Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/MuritaiSchool/

Kind regards

Elder Abuse Hits Close to Home
Age Concern is raising awareness of elder abuse during Elder Abuse Awareness Week from 15-22 June 2017 which begins on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on 15 June 2017.
Something many people find shocking is that elder abuse often happens within families. Many older people feel ashamed their own flesh and blood are treating them badly and this shame or stigma means people don't always report abuse. This is one of the reasons it stays hidden. It’s not ok - Age Concern New Zealand needs help stopping elder abuse in our communities. We need your support to speak up and make sure we all play a part protecting our older Kiwis.
Unfortunately Age Concern elder abuse statistics show that:
75% of alleged abusers are family members
50% of the alleged abusers are adult children or grandchildren
50/50 - alleged abusers are as likely to be female as male
Please seek help if you suspect any abuse is happening - www.ageconcern.org.nz.

MASSEY UNIVERSITY - CHILD ASTHMA STUDY
Massey University is conducting an important research study looking at the different types of asthma in children aged 8-18.  The study aims to examine the causes of childhood asthma and therefore improve treatment options for all asthmatics.

The study involves a lung function test and a short questionnaire.

If your child has asthma, please consider being part of this study.  Please contact Jean Feary McKenzie 0800 080 078 or asthma@massey.ac.nz
