FROM THE PRINCIPAL
What an amazing day we had with our WHAT NOW visitors last week. Eastbourne turned on a crisp and clear winter's morning for our beach filming, and a freezing cold and wet Wellington afternoon for our staff Vs students gauntlet race and for some spray foam cannon fun - it truly was four seasons in one day!
It was an incredible opportunity for Muritai School to be selected for this day, and we are delighted with how our school community was able to be showcased on national television. We don’t yet know when it will be screened on What Now, however as soon as I hear I will update you all, as I know you would like to see our superstars in action. My favourite part of the day was that it was entirely child centred, as in the adults didn’t answer one question about our school, the day was focussed on capturing our students on film, and the great learning opportunities and fun we have at Muritai School.
Here are a few highlights of the day to share.
Learning Ambassadors
Annette Borgonje - (Associate Principal of the senior school) and I have begun working alongside some of our senior students who have been selected as Muritai’s learning ambassadors, to bring student voice to our ongoing improvement journey in ‘being the best we can be’ as educators. This week we have met and discussed learning at Muritai, and as we dig deeper they will be a part of leading future consultation and decision making with our students, our staff, you our community and even our Board of Trustees. Here are some pictures of these great learners and thinkers in action.
Concerns and Complaints
It is useful to have a clear process for all workplaces (- including schools) around concerns and complaints. Recently our Board of Trustees and staff have been creating a flowchart to assist you if a concern or complaint arises. Should you have a concern or complaint that you would like to bring to our attention, I invite you to follow our revised process as is pictured at the end of the newsletter. POLYFEST
Many students at Muritai have participated in the World Vision Famine this year and it is time to collect their sponsorship money and send it to school. I would love to hear about what students did for their challenge as well.
It was a great day at the Inter-zone Cross Country championships on Tuesday 20 June. The conditions were perfect for running, no wind and the sun was shining. Everyone put in 100% effort in to their race. They represented the South East Zone and the school with pride.

POLYFEST
Preparation for Polyfest continues for our Kapa Haka group. They are looking fabulous and are ready for their performance next Thursday 6 July at 6pm. All tickets have been returned to Koranui School and any tickets left over will be available at the door.
PERSONAL PASSION PROJECTS
Our senior school students have worked on their ‘PPP’s’ over the past 4 weeks. These are self selected learning projects and we have a whole range from Hairstyles over the ages, Creations with LED lights, Mini-sculptures, Art, Cooking -the list goes on. Everyone is welcome to come and view these projects next Wednesday evening during our Celebration of Learning from 3pm to 6pm.
ROBOTICS
Children in Room 11 have been making robotic bristlebot bugs using appendages printed with our new 3D Printer. They are lots of fun and look marvellous.
WORLD VISION FAMINE 2017

The deadline to get fundraising in is fast approaching. Please make sure we have all your fundraising in by next Thursday 6 July (end of Term 2). I can still bank it after if that is not possible.

SCHOOL CHOIR
Did you know that Muritai has a new auditioned choir for singers from Years 5 - 8? We meet weekly and we are lead by Mrs Hollard and Mrs Hooke, both with a great love and wide experience in Performing Arts. We learn a range of different songs, both from New Zealand and other countries. The choir have performed twice in our school assembly so far this term and we are currently preparing a piece which we hope to combine with some of our talented student instrumentalists. We are so excited about our choir and what we will accomplish in Term 3. Watch this space!
SPORTS
Interzone Cross Country Champs

We had some amazing results, with 7 of our students qualifying (top 10 finisher) for the Regional championships in Masterton in 2 weeks time: Congratulations to Aubrey, Rosa, Lola, Mia, Ollie, Fraser and Elodie.
A special mention to Mia Campbell - 1st Year 6 Girls and Lola Campbell - 2nd Year 6 Girls.
Basketball - Year 3 Team - Muritai Magic vs EHS Bulls - Final !!!!
In a tense and competitive final Muritai Magic came out victorious against the mighty EHS Bulls ! The game was the best we have seen all season, the teamwork was outstanding, defense impressive, and the passing skills of the players second to none.
Thanks to Trish Theobald and Rodger Thompson for their excellent coaching and to the parents for their passionate support from the sidelines. Look out next season as the Muritai Magic will be casting their spell once again !
CALENDARS,
Orders for calendars, diaries, etc need to be into the office by Wednesday 5 July at the latest please. If you need a new order form, you can get these from the office. These make great presents for grandparents, family and friends as well as for yourself.
This year the school will also be selling Smencils (scented pensils) - the world’s only gourmet scented pencils made from 100% recycled newspapers.
HOME AND SCHOOL - DISCO
The Home and School Association are beginning of organise the school disco which will be held on Friday 11 August. Look out for notices early next term with all the details.
PARENT CURRICULUM INFORMATION EVENING/ AFTERNOON - JUNIOR SCHOOL
How to support your child in their learning sessions will be held on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. for an hour in room 3 and repeated again on Thursday afternoons at 1.30 p.m. The dates for these are as follows

A fun and inspiring small group parenting course for parents of children aged 6-12 years.

HUTT CITY LIBRARIES - BEYOND THE PAGE FESTIVAL

We are getting excited about Beyond the Page festival being held across Hutt City, Upper Hutt and Wellington City libraries in the July school holidays. There are many great events for children and youth to attend. Further information is available at https://beyondthepage.nz/
We can now announce that our Te Reo Wainene o Tua – the sweet story of yesteryear, Māori storytelling event presenter is Mātai Rangi Smith (Rongowhakaata, Ngāi Tāmanuhiri, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Te Wairoa).
Experience the wonder of oral storytelling in te Reo with Mātai. An amazing opportunity for tamariki and rangatahi to experience full immersion Māori language storytelling. Open to all ages, this will suit those that have Te Reo as well as those that don’t but love a great story!
