FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Tena koutou katoa, warm greetings to you all
This week has certainly been a celebration of The Arts at Muritai with our own fabulous Art Exhibition in our school hall, and the Artsplash Choir and the Artsplash Dance groups performing at the Michael Fowler Centre. Thanks to the wonderful teachers at Muritai, our children have so many opportunities. Thank you also for coming along and supporting these events, it’s so special when we see our children shine.
I’m writing to you from the New Zealand Principal’s Conference in Queenstown where we’ve been focussed on houora- wellbeing for our students, our teachers and the Principals in each of our schools. We’ve been treated to some of the very best speakers in New Zealand from a wide range of backgrounds and topics each day and also visiting local schools. A highlight for me was Mike King speaking on self esteem as an antidote to suicide, and also listening to the current Minister of Education Nikki Kaye - at the time just 48 hours out from our next election. The Principals of New Zealand then were able to address the Minister and it was a rare opportunity to discuss what we want from the current Government for the schools we each represent.
Thanks to the great team at Muritai for keeping the school humming whilst I’ve been at the conference.
Thank you
Thank you to you all for enabling the entire staff to meet together just last Monday by picking up your students early. Your support meant we were able to meet as an entire teaching and learning team including student learning ambassadors, our support staff from the office, library, grounds and classrooms as well as our teachers and Board of Trustees representatives. As a learning community we will continue to explore future focussed thinking over the coming terms, including some sessions for parents. I will advertise these with plenty of notice in the newsletter.
Health Consultation
It’s not too late to have your voice heard on our Health consultation. We are seeking your thoughts on our current Health and PE Curriculum programme at Muritai School. It is recommended that schools seek community views specifically on Health and PE every two years, and your thoughts are important to us in moving forward with our curriculum design for 2018-2019.
Please follow this link to further information around our existing Health and PE programme and the survey questions, we estimate the survey will take you no more than 5 minutes.
End of term Farewells
Next week is our final week of the term, and we are saying goodbye to one of our special teachers, Mikaela Cody who started at Muritai back in 2008 as the senior leader of the year 1-2 team. Mikaela is very sporty and has been one of our sport co-ordinators organising netball, swimming sports, athletics, touch and basketball amongst other school events. During her time at Muritai, we have seen her get married to Bert, travelling to Rarotonga for their wedding and then taking maternity leave twice with Eva and then Zara. She is a bubbly, vivacious and fun teacher and we wish Mikaela all the very best as she moves into Early Childhood teaching as her next career move. Room 7’s teacher for Term 4 will be announced to Room 7 parents early next week, and will pop in for a visit or two with the children before the end of this term.
Room 6 - Writing Whizz kids!
Last week I was invited to see the wonderful learning going on in Room 6 with their writing - I can tell you that I was very impressed with what our year 2 students are able to produce! The learners were very proud to share their incredible writing - If you’re going past Room 6, stop in for a peek at their beautiful writing display and you too will be amazed by our talented writers.
Kind regards
Ngā Mihi

FROM THE SCHOOL
ARTSPLASH CHOIR
Eighty two of our students (year 3-6) performed in the Artsplash Choir Concert on Wednesday evening and they were truly outstanding! They sang their wee hearts out , dance, rapped and generally had an excellent time whilst being on the stage of the Michael Fowler Centre. It is such a wonderful opportunity for our students to be singing with a live band as well as an orchestra and to participate in an event of this calibre and size! You can have a peek on our facebook page.
A dance group of Year 5-8 students perform on tonight (Friday) for Artsplash Dance. They are looking good!
'Arts are Alive' at Muritai! The Visual Art Exhibition has been wonderful this week and we have also had art exhibited at the Artsplash Exhibition

Well done to Ben Murphy, Marta Perez-Benet, Francisca Zaballa and Ming Bao, our year 8 team, who came 5th and Cooper Watson, Poppy Neal, Charlie Watkins and Alex Irvine who came 14th.
Many thanks to Tania Watkins and Beatriz Perez-Benet for taking our teams!
TOUCH RUGBY
The team lists have been sent out. If your child returned their permission slip to play touch rugby and have not brought a notice home please email Mikaela at cody@muritai.school.nz and she will email you a list. There are about 4 teams who do not have coaches. We are desperately seeking coaches as there are about 4 teams without a coach and unfortunately we will not be able to register the teams next week if they do not have a coach. If you are able to coach please email Mikaela by Tuesday 26th September.
FUNDRAISING FOR ABEL TASMAN CAMP
As you may know, the Year 8 students are furiously fundraising for their Abel Tasman camp! We have very gratefully received a few quality gifts which we hope to put together to create a Christmas Raffle. If you have any delicious treats or quality gifts that are unwanted and worthy of a raffle prize, please would you consider donating them to the Year 8 group so that they can organise this event? Any donations can be made to the office, Annette Borgonje or any of the Senior School teachers.
YEAR 7 / 8 SPEECH FINALS

Six finalists from across the Year 7/8 Syndicate shared their speeches to compete for Year 7 winner and Year 8 winner: Mila Rose Daniel-Oakshatt, Emmylou Nickel, Holly Churchman, Oscar Zuijderwijk, Molly Mathewson and Cella Connell.
A huge congratulations to our winners -
Year 7: Emmylou Nickel

We would like to thank Bec Power and Sue Fields for sharing their expertise as our distinguished judges!
PERSUASIVE WRITING
The Year 7/8 students' have been exploring Advertising this term in our 'Who's Leading Who' Inquiry. As part of this the students were asked to complete a persuasive speech, a piece of persuasive writing and an advertisement. Ollie chose to do a persuasive piece for the school community to encourage them to buy his 'Personal Passion Project' - Homemade Chilli Sauce.
By Ollie Fastier
Dear Parents & Caregivers
Is there anything missing in your fridge?
Well, if you say yes, I have the thing for you!
Try my new chilli sauce.
Buy this extra healthy snack that will leave you wanting more.
You will be also supporting Ollie Fastier. Also it's encouraging learning. It's better than the shops such as (Kmart, 4square and the dairy) because it's cheaper and more flavoursome!
This chilli sauce is healthy, it’s got very healthy ingredients such as veggies. The chilli sauce gives you stronger muscles. It is homemade and contains no nasty stuff.
This is very delicious. It’s good for dipping food. Great for dipping chips and crispy chicken. If you want a recipe, contact Ollie by going to Room 23.
So in conclusion that's why you need to try Ollie’s healthy, delicious chilli sauce. SO BUY IT NOW!

BASKETBALL
On Tuesday the 12th of September three of our basketball teams, Muritai Magic (Year 3), Muritai Strikers (Year 4) and Muritai Thunder (Year 5/6) played in the Interzone basketball tournament at Walternash in Taita.
We played 5 games against other schools from around the Hutt Valley.
Muritai Magic were versing year 3 and 4 teams. The first game we lost 22 to 8 and that team got a trophy, they were a challenging team. Then we had to wait and watch the finals. The year 5 and 6 team and the year 4 team played. The year 4 team got 2nd in the Interzones, great job! The Year 5 and 6 team tried their best like us! It was a fun day.

NETBALL
The Year 4 team worked extremely hard this season gaining skills such as team work, and learning what each player had to do on the court. They persevered through very cold and wet conditions, each team member should be proud of their efforts. You should all be very proud of yourselves as I am sure your teachers, school and family would be as you all did exceptionally well. Please give yourself a pat on the back!

The Hungry Caterpillar Project - books needed!
Eastbourne local and former Muritai School pupil, Ella Tait, has created a book drive called the Hungry Caterpillar Project to provide books for children who may not have any of their own.
She and a friend are collecting books for primary-age children (2-12 year olds) . The books will be going to a new home, so must be in good condition (you must be willing to give them as a gift to someone) or, better still, new - even one or two could make such a difference.
Books can be dropped into Harcourts Eastbourne until 7 October. For more information, visit their Facebook page
