Tena koutou katoa, warm greetings to you all

Health Consultation
We are seeking your thoughts on our current Health and PE Curriculum programme at Muritai School.  It is recommended that schools seek community views specifically on Health and PE every two years, and your thoughts are important to us in moving forward with our curriculum design for 2018-2019.
Please follow this link to further information around our existing Health and PE programme and  the survey questions, we estimate the survey will take you no more than 5 minutes.

Learning Ambassadors
Last night at our Board of Trustees meeting we were joined by our Learning Ambassadors who took us through a discussion and initial review around ‘Howie’ and our school values.  The Ambassadors also presented to the Board the ‘7 Principles of 21st Century Learning’ (from the latest OECD Report) and discussed their understanding of these.  I felt very proud of our students who were able to articulate and review some complex educational beliefs and theories to a group of Board members and our Senior Leadership Team.  We look forward to now discussing these as a staff and then gathering your thoughts as a community as we continue to explore current  best practice in teaching and learning.

Onesie day:
We have had a very exciting Onesie/PJ day today raising money for Wellington Free Ambulance.  One of our superstar learners  Luke Butler and his class, Room 11, have raised over $800 by hosting the day and baking and selling treats at morning tea time.  Thanks to our community for supporting our day - we looked very impressive on the field during our fire alarm evacuation this morning - almost like there had been a mass breakout from Wellington Zoo!

Muritai & Wellesley Sports Exchange
I watched the Wellesley – Muritai annual soccer and rugby fixture this week and was impressed by the way the Muritai teams played the game and carried themselves. It was an absolutely freezing Eastbourne afternoon and it was exciting to see so many Muritai students and parents on the sidelines cheering our teams on! I was very proud of the Muritai teams and also pass on our thanks to Brett Fastier who prepared our students for the exchange. Congratulations Wellesley - see you again next year!

Age appropriate Social Media Use:
Below are two excellent links if you’d like to explore what social media your children are able to access.  We as a school do not promote social media use for students during school hours, and I’d like to specifically remind parents that Instagram is recommended for the ages of 12 and above.

Introducing one of our learners -  Ollie:
I’ve been working with Ollie’s mum to create this video to introduce Ollie to our school community.  We wanted to share a little about Ollie, for you to better understand why you might see him videoing, and some tips to interact with him around the school.  Meet Ollie - https://youtu.be/uKIjZxmwGkU

Kind regards
Ngā Mihi

Hoop Club Eastbourne
As the kids were finishing up their Saturday Hoop Club session with shooting drills they were pleasantly surprised to see Steven Adams towering in the door frame watching them! It was inspirational for the kids and parents to hear from a kiwi basketball role model!

Thank you to Greg Halford and Rodger Thompson and his team for making this visit happen.

COMMUNITY NOTICES
It’s getting to that time of year when the Daffodil bulbs are popping up all over the Wairarapa district, a sunny little reminder that spring is almost upon us, bringing with it the annual Carterton Daffodil Festival on Sunday 10th September. What is now for many a time-honoured tradition, the festival includes the picking of daffodils at Middlerun, a historic property in Gladstone. As in 2016, there will be FREE buses departing  throughout the day starting at 10am from Broadway, to shuttle eager festival goers to and from Middlerun.
The Daffodil Express Steam Train, enroute from Wellington, will be arriving at 10.40am at the Carterton Railway Station before proceeding to Masterton. The short trip between Carterton and Masterton offers local residents and visitors a taste of the historic steam train, whilst still making the most of the festivals activities. To book a round trip Carterton to Masterton return email: carterton.rail.museum@xnet.co.nz to book a Wellington return trip visit http://www.steaminc.org.nz/ .
The festival will be as wonderful as ever with the Big WaiArt Sale, live music, the Daffodil Express Steam Train excursion and all the fun of the fair!

Eastbourne Junior Cricket Club
2017/18 Registration Open for Year 1-8 players
Online Junior Cricket Registration has opened for the 2017/18 season. All the details and online registration can be found at www.eastbournecricket.org.nz.

Kiwi Conservation Club
To get spring off to a positive start, come and join forces with Places for Penguins for the 2017 Wellington South Coast clean-up!  All of the family can help with this one so here are the details:-
Location: Tarakena Bay, Moa Point Road, Wellington
Date: Saturday 16th September (back-up rain date is Sunday 17th so check the facebook page for any updates before you set out)
Time: 10.30am-12pm )followed by a BBQ at Lyall Bay 12.30pm)
What to bring: Please bring your own gardening or rubber gloves so that we avoid using more rubber gloves!
Plastics on our beaches and in our oceans are an increasing threat to these fragile habitats. If we all work together, we can achieve great things as shown by photos from last years' clean-up on the facebook page (Wellington South Coast Cleanup) so do come and join us if you can.  We will be running our photo competition again for the strangest items you find on the beach. There will be some giveaways and of course the BBQ at Lyall Bay afterwards to reward you for your efforts:)
Groups will be working all around the south coast on that morning so if you stop off at another location that's great too!

VOLUNTEEERS NEEDED FOR MATIU/SOMES ISLAND
Our volunteer group, the Eastbourne Forest Rangers Inc,  provides guiding services on Matiu/Somes Island.  Over recent years we have had the pleasure of guiding many Wellington school groups on their educational visits to the island.
We now need more volunteer guides, especially those who are able to guide mid-week.  If you are interested in becoming a Matiu/Somes volunteer guide, commencing later this year or early next, we would welcome hearing from you.   I will be pleased to discuss this request further or to provide any additional information required.
Please contact me on efrtours@gmail.com  or  027 242 9211
