FROM THE
PRINCIPAL
Welcome back to term 3 to all of our
Muritai families - an especially warm welcome to those new families joining us
and also to Stephanie Lamborn who is teaching in Room 8. Steph is an
experienced and passionate teacher who is excited to be part of our team here
and is already enjoying life at Muritai School.
If you see Steph or any of our new Muritai students and families around,
please make them feel welcome!
NZEI (New
Zealand Educational Institute)
Thanks for your support last term with
our teachers attending NZEI meetings. At the meeting, teachers were asked
to vote on action in response to their last contract offer from the Government.
Members felt the offer did not address workload issues, extra learning
support concerns or ways to stem the growing crisis in recruiting and retaining
teachers.
As some of you will be aware from
ongoing media coverage, teachers are continuing to fight for a better deal for
our kids. This will likely include some form of industrial action on Wednesday 15th August. Our Board of Trustees is currently seeking advice
from the Ministry of Education and the School Trustees Association about how
best to proceed on this day. We will communicate more with you when we have
further information. We know this could be potentially inconvenient if school
does not function as a normal school day but we really appreciate your support.
Teachers are advocating for better conditions that will make for better
learning for our children.
Teachers are campaigning for
- Better conditions
for our children - such as increased staffing
- More
resources/staff to support children with additional learning needs
- For better pay,
including a pay jolt to salaries for teachers to address the teacher
shortage in New Zealand
Thank you for supporting better
conditions in education - both at Muritai and across New Zealand.
Te Ora i Te Huringa - Living the Change
Our term 3 school wide unit is underway
with teams beginning to inquire and investigate aspects of Sustainability:
Learning to think and act in ways that safeguard the well-being of people and
the planet. There is a flurry of excitement and anticipation building as
we prepare for our learning to be demonstrated or ‘Contributed’ within our
Muritai School Production that will take place at the end of term 3!
Muritai School Vision, Mission and
Values - How we act and how we learn:
Last term we completed our final survey
loop with parents around our consultation process for refreshing our Vision,
Mission and Values at Muritai school. This followed the parent consultation
evening in Term 1 facilitated by Mark Osborne which determined the draft
Vision, Mission and Values.
A huge thank you for the 91 parent
responders to the survey.
The results of the survey are as follows:
:
At the last Board meeting the Board of
Trustees moved that the Vision for Muritai School is to: ‘Be the Best we Can
Be’, and the Mission is ‘An inclusive community of creative, courageous,
connected explorers’.
Values: our school values will
contribute to the way in which we act and learn at school. Over this term
each class will explore these new values in our learning and our actions, and
we will bring you updates as we become experts with these.
This week Tui team have been sharing on
our Muritai Facebook page their Values leaning in action - please find a few
snippets below from their week…
What’s that?!?? We have new Muritai Values! Over
the next 3 days Tui Team are being introduced to these.
Today we are learning
how to be an EXPLORER, how to be curious, creative and critical thinkers and
how to ask questions and seek to find answers!
On the second day of our values introduction Tui
Team learnt how to be CONNECTORS. We had to collaborate, communicate, and
connect with others to complete a range of balance tasks.
Today we learnt to be CONTRIBUTORS! This afternoon
we were kind, considerate children who like to find solutions and take action!
We made kindness cards to give to people around school, letting them know that
we appreciate them!
Reporting to Parents: Mid Year written
reports
Our mid year written reports will
come home next Friday afternoon, and will demonstrate the learning that your
child has been involved in so far this year. We received such rich survey
information from parents, students and staff in the redesign of our mid year
reports and we’ve tried to encompass all parties’ wishes in the revised format.
We also invite further feedback on the format once you’ve received these
reports next week.
The reports no longer have a focus on
National Standards, instead have a focus on progress towards the New Zealand
Curriculum learning levels.
This New Zealand Curriculum chart
demonstrates that the Curriculum levels are across years and demonstrate a
broader expectation of progress. The reports will not be demonstrating if a
learner is ‘Below’ or ‘Above’, however will instead provide information on the
achievement of the curriculum level in Reading, Writing and Maths at mid year.
The major focus for the reports will be
the personal achievements and next steps for your child, as well as comments
written about them as an individual.
As always if you would like further
information as to your child’s achievement or learning progress you are welcome
to contact their classroom teacher at any time throughout the year.
A huge thank you to all of the staff who have
worked very hard over the past month to write these detailed reports.

FROM THE
SCHOOL
Netball - the Marshmallows
Our Intermediate netball teams did very well in the first round of the
season with the Muritai 1 winning their grade and the Muritai 2 team coming
first equal. For Muritai 2 (better known as the ‘Marshmallows’) this was
a pleasant surprise as they had decided to play as a social team this
year. They have had a lot of fun and
also success so far. Congratulations to both our teams and we wish them
well in the following round.
ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS
We still have a few entertainment books which have not been returned to
the school or not paid for. If you still have a book, please either
return to the school as soon as possible or make payment for the kept book.
The organisers will be contacting families with outstanding books in the
next week. Many thanks for all your
support with this fundraiser.

COMMUNITY
NOTICES
Hei Listen! is one of the collections available on the new
online HEIHEI website you may have seen advertised on TV lately. HEIHEI is a collaboration between NZ On Air and TVNZ and launched in May this year. It carries a wide range of free mainly local content
for primary-aged children on a safe, non-commercial platform. It has a
free downloadable app and can also be accessed on tablets and pcs.
Hei Listen! is an
online collection that’s all about a listening experience for children. We're
encouraging young people to take a break from watching a screen, and instead
inviting them to engage their ears and their imagination. We want them to hear
their own voices and have their worlds reflected and extended.
Our aim is to create a collection within the HEIHEI
site that offers a rich mix of audio-based stories, features, jokes, poems,
games, music, interviews, and sound fun. It gives children a voice and contains
creative material by and for children. Our audience age groups are 4-6 years
old, and 7-9 years old. We do include work by older children too but our
primary target is pre intermediate school chidlren.
Here's a link to our two pages Hei Listen! Iti and
Hei Listen! Nui -
Scroll along the stories and snippets and you'll
hear work by Muritai pupils such as Ori, Amandine, Mia, Charlie, Taylah,
Archie, Macy, Eleanor, Sofia, Alex, Devon and Lauren. There'll
be plenty more to come! It's Lauren's voice on the promo too.
Though we're a listening space, we do feature
photos and art work by children and there's plenty on offer from Eastbourne children to enjoy.
I've been extremely lucky to have such a creative,
patient and generous group at Muritai School and would especially like to thank the teachers who've been so helpful. I
hope I can keep visiting and collecting more audio and art work!
