FROM
THE PRINCIPAL
Kia
ora koutou,
The
weather has really started to warm up and there is a distinct feeling of Spring
in the air here at school. Please remind your child to bring their hat
every day to school, to keep them safe in the sun. Many of our daily activities take place
outside and we would like to keep them safe from the harsh New Zealand sun.
Today
we had over 80 students attending the South East Zone Athletic Sports -what a
brilliant day they will have had in the sun. Keep an eye on our school
Facebook page for up to date athletics results.
Classes
and Staffing 2019
Thank
you for the information you have sent regarding your child's class for 2019. We
are working through this information and will now begin to place the students
in classes for 2019.
We
are currently in discussions with our staff as to their teaching level for next
year, and will bring this information to you when we have our syndicate teams
decided.
We
will be farewelling Janelle McKay and Carol Algar at the end of the year
as they have won positions in other schools - congratulations to both of you!
We welcome Felicity Lovell from
Waterloo School, Jessica Williams from Redcliffs school, Greer Dalziel and
Kelly Williams to the Muritai teaching team.
Building Projects
The old dental clinic has now been transformed and
so that we stop calling it ‘The old Dental Clinic’ we are currently referring
to it as ‘The Cottage’! If you have a great alternative suggestion for this new
meeting space’s name, we would be pleased to hear any ideas. You will find our staff temporarily using
this space as our staffroom for the remainder of 2018 as our staffroom
renovations are now underway. Please
take extra care around the construction site entrances.
Teacher only Day - Term 4 2018
In Term 4 we have our final Teacher
only day of 2018. This will be Friday the 23rd November, and
school will be closed. Our final Teacher Only Day this year will be used
by teachers for professional development together as a whole staff, and also a
portion of the day as administration and report writing preparation time for
teaching staff.

FROM THE BOARD
Last week the New Zealand Education Institute (NZEI) announced that members of the Teachers and Principals Union are planning a week of rolling strikes in November. This will see a full day strike across the Wellington region on Friday the 16th November 2018.
The Board have considered guidance from the New Zealand School Trustees Association (NZSTA) and the availability on non-union member teaching staff to safely supervise children. As such, we have decided to close Muritai School on this day if Union members do strike. The Government and Union have entered mediation and will continue to try and reach a deal prior to 16th November. If the strike is cancelled we will let you know as soon as we are able.
Teachers and Principals across NZ have voted to strike as they believe key areas such as support for children with special needs, class sizes in years 4-8, professional release time etc have not been addressed by the Government. An overview of the claim and process to date can be found at https://campaigns.nzei.org.nz/time/sept-offer-ptca-ppca-2/
On behalf of the staff and Board of Trustees, we thank you for your support and apologise for any inconvenience that occurs to students and parents should the strike go ahead.
Our sincere thanks to you all. Ngā mihi nui,
Bec Power - Muritai School Principal
Nigel Cass - Muritai School Board of Trustees Chairperson

We are
really excited to be bringing our Kelly Club before and after school care
programme to the Muritai School community, from Monday 12 November. Kelly Club have been operating throughout NZ
for over 9 years, and our motto is “Kids Home Away from Home”.
Children
who attend our programme get to do a wonderful array of different things in a
fun, safe and caring environment. Things like, sports and games, arts and
crafts, baking and cooking, science and discovery, along with structured free
play after a long day at school.
We can't
wait to meet the school community and get our programme started at Muritai

COMMUNITY NOTICES
Hutt
City Libraries Summer Reading Challenge 2018-19
·
International research shows the 'summer
slide' (where reading gains slip over the long summer holidays) is a major
barrier to ongoing literacy achievement
·
Tamariki who have access to books and
learning experiences during the long holidays show less of a decrease (or even
an improvement!) in their reading levels when they return to kura/school
·
The Big Read motivates tamariki to read
books and participate in activities. Our friendly librarians are always
available to provide support
Any
child aged 0-12 years can sign up for the challenge at any of our eight Hutt
City Libraries from 1 December.
The
entire whānau can join in, this year we have The Little Read for ages 0-5
years; The Big Read for ages 5-12; and Explore, Read, Relax for rangatahi and
adults.
It’s
a great way to support your child’s reading and help them maintain the reading
achievements they have made throughout the school year, even while on holiday!
More
details at library.huttcity.govt.nz and at all Hutt City Libraries.
