FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Tena koutou Muritai families,
Welcome back to Muritai School!
We are all so excited to welcome you all back to school tomorrow, alongside 17 new students and their families starting with us for their first day at Muritai. The teachers have been busy preparing the learning spaces, and they are looking forward to reconnecting with all of our wonderful Muritai learners. We have spent the past few days together as a staff Exploring, Connecting and Contributing with our strategic plan, with each other and reigniting our whole school approach in ‘Being the Best we Can Be’ after our summer break!
I wish to extend my condolences to all in our community who have been affected by the recent tragedies in Eastbourne. I know that specifically the passing of local resident Matt Hayes has deeply affected many of you and your children, and we are all thinking of you at this difficult time. Matt was a parent of children at Wellesley and was instrumental in the planning, development and building of the Eastbourne skate ramp. Matt was also a good friend of many parents, staff and students of Muritai, some of whom were present when he passed away whilst surfing due to an unrelated medical event. If you are concerned in any way around your child’s wellbeing regarding this loss, please do not hesitate to connect so that we can offer you, and your child some additional support.
Hats
Please remember to send wide brimmed or bucket hats to school for all children in Year 1-6, as only our Year 7-8 have the option to wear caps as a special privilege, in keeping with our sunsmart policy. It is certainly pretty warm at school in February so a filled water bottle sent along, will be much appreciated by thirsty learners. Please also pop some sunscreen on as extra protection, we do have bottles available in all classrooms for top ups by children during the day.
2021 Classes
I have updated the classroom teacher placements below to remind you all of our change of room numbers, and a slight reshuffle since the end of last year with the news that Deane McKay has won a position with Sport Waikato as a Primary Sector Manager. This news went out to the affected learners' parents and caregivers via email last week.
We are very proud of and excited for Deane, however will be very sorry to see him move on. Deane will be here for the first half of term 1, and we will farewell Deane as a school at the end of Week 4, on Friday afternoon - more details to come a little closer to the time.

COMMUNITY NOTICES
Guitar Lessons at Muritai School - Do you want to learn to play guitar?
I am now accepting enrolments for Term 1 2021, for pupils in years 3 to 8.
These lessons are taken by Charles Hazlewood on Monday or Friday during school time. The tuition is held in small groups according to ability and age. It is educational, and normally a lot of fun!
The school has guitars to use at lesson time, but you will need a guitar to play at home.
I am a very experienced music teacher currently teaching at several schools in Lower Hutt. The cost is $12 per 30 minute lesson, multiplied by the number of lessons held during the term. Usually there would be 8 lessons, so the term fees would be $96.
Please call Charles on 04-934-2759 or 029-9392759 or email at charleshazlewood1@gmail.com
