FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome to the first newsletter of 2017 and the first from myself as Principal. I have enjoyed a wonderful first two days and a lovely welcome to Muritai School.
Yesterday was a very positive start to the year for us all as we welcomed your tamariki back to school. A special welcome to all of our new Muritai learners and families, we trust that you will quickly all be feeling settled, making new friends and launching into your learning to ‘Be the Best You Can Be’ at Muritai School.
Our Muritai staff have been working hard over the break to design the learning that is taking place in our busy learning spaces this week, and taking part in a week of professional learning themselves prior to the school year beginning. Thank you to our teachers for spending so much time setting up our students for success by taking the time to create such special learning adventures. We certainly are a lucky school!
Thanks goes to Carole and Jo in our office who have been back at work since the 16th of January to ensure the whole school was ready to ‘hit the ground running’ on day one of the year. Thanks also to Dan, Sue and our wider support staff who have also put time and energy into creating the conditions for all of our success. What a team!
Remember there is no school on Monday the 6th February due to Waitangi Day.
Our school has a facebook page - if you ‘like’ it, you’ll be able to follow some digital messages and sharing over the year: https://www.facebook.com/MuritaiSchool/ Keep an eye out next week for some sharing from our first two weeks at school….
And lastly from me - the Muritai newsletters in the past have had a catchy title e.g. our previous Principal Andrew Bird’s newsletters were called ‘Bird’s Eye View’, and Acting Principal in 2016 Maureen Buckley’s were called ‘Maureen’s Musings’. Now I appreciate that with a last name like ‘Power’ there are going to be many weird and wonderful suggestions that you creative types can come up with so please, do send me your suggestions and then next week we can share some of the popular suggestions and perhaps have a vote. There is no expectation that the newsletter needs to have my name in it, so any original suggestions are welcome. Please send all suggestions to Principal@Muritai.school.nz - I look forward to seeing what our new newsletter will be called.
FROM THE SCHOOL
NETBALL CONVENOR NEEDED
It will soon be netball season and the school needs a convenor to look after the Muritai teams. The convenor needs to attend meetings at Hutt Netball and forward emails and notices to all teams ensuring all Managers and Coaches informed . If you are keen to help, please contact Jo or Carole in the office. Unfortunately the school does not have anyone able to do this job this year and Muritai netball will be reliant on a volunteer.
Many Muritai students are catching the Route 83 public bus to travel to Pt Howard, Lowry Bay and other bays. There is, however, a school bus (for students use only) which leaves from Muritai School on the Oroua Street bus stop then collects San Antonio School before travelling to the Hutt Rec, opposite Sacred Heart College.
HOME AND SCHOOL
Muritai Home and School committee is an enthusiastic, energetic group of parents who support Muritai School throughout the year.
Our objective is to provide a link between the children, the home and parents/caregivers, the school and Board of Trustees. We also support the school through fundraising and social events.
Joining the Committee is a great way to meet new friends, particularly for those who are new in school or the area and who have an interest in the activities of their children at
It is a fantastic way to support your school and become involved in your children's education.
We are looking for a new chair person, Treasurer and secretary for 2017 and some additional new members.
Please contact Hannah Watkins via email at email@example.com or mobile 0221306640 if you are interested and would like more information. Happy to meet you and discuss what we do.
Thank you, Home and School
SCHOLASTIC LUCKY BOOKS
Throughout the year your child will be coming home with Lucky Book Club catalogues. If you are interested in making purchases please either fill in the forms in the catalogue and return them to the office by the due date or you can make your order online at mybookclub.scholastic.co.nz When purchases are made the school receives reward points which enable us to buy new books for our school library which we appreciate greatly.
The first issue for the year is open now and orders need to be made by Friday the 17th of February. Please note payment for orders handed into the office can only be made by credit card or cheques as payment is made directly to Scholastic.
All orders made online or through the school are returned together usually 1 - 2 weeks after the date the orders were due in and will be given to the child unless we are told otherwise.
Thank you for your support.

*** Important information for those wishing to play in Premier League teams
Last year we successfully formed an alliance with the Stop Out Sports Club, whereby both Clubs worked together to field combined teams for Junior players that wished to play in the Junior Premier Leagues (10th grade and above). We will continue with the alliance again this season, with players chosen for Premier League teams through a series of trials. There will be three trials which each player wishing to play in a Premier League team will need to attend. Trial dates have been confirmed, however we are still to confirm times with Stop Out. Dates are as follows:
- Sunday, 12th February
- Tuesday 14th to Thursday 16th February (early evening) – different grades will trial on different nights.
- Saturday 18th or Sunday 19th February
Please note Eastbourne/Stop Out Alliance teams require an extra commitment from both players and parents (e.g. two trainings per week, travelling further afield to matches which are played anywhere in the Wellington region (including the Kapiti Coast) rather than the Hutt Valley only, and additional costs for extra junior development coaching and various tournaments). If your son or daughter wishes to trial for a Premier League please ensure you tick the box on the registration form, and email email@example.com so we can ensure you receive the trial times when they are confirmed.

Heart Foundation Annual Street Appeal – we need your help!
The Heart Foundation’s 2017 Wellington Region Street Appeal will take place on 17/18 February 2017 and we need your help!
The Annual Appeal is the Heart Foundation’s opportunity to raise crucial funds needed to continue our work in beating heart disease and stopping people dying prematurely from heart disease. One person dies from heart disease in NZ every 90 minutes, many of these deaths are premature and preventable. Volunteer and help us fight back!
We are now recruiting volunteers to help with the 2017 street appeal. We have various locations where we will be collecting across the region (Wellington, Porirua, Kapiti, Hutt Valley) so if you want to help us please email MaryL@heartfoundation.org.nz back and let us know your preferred area. We would love to hear from you!
