Kia ora koutou

Thank you for your support with our Teacher Only Day last week - we realise that school closing for the day can cause an impact on your family, and an inconvenience to you all.  The reason for the TOD so early in the year was for our teaching staff to attend a day long workshop with Kath Murdoch - an international expert we had flown in from Melbourne.  I engaged with Kath some 18 months ago and this was the first date she had available!

We were delighted to share the day with other teachers  from Island Bay, Cashmere Avenue, Boulcott, Maungaraki, Redwood, and Douglas Park.   Kath is an experienced teacher, author, university lecturer and popular consultant who has worked for many years in schools across Australia, New Zealand, Africa, America, Asia and Europe. She is respected around the world for her work in the field of inquiry based learning and integrative curriculum. As I mentioned, I had been attempting to access Kath’s expertise for some time,  and she was certainly worth the wait.  The staff were ‘buzzing’ after the day, and enthusiastic about getting back into classrooms on Monday to use some of the strategies that we all learned or were reminded of.

It was also great to connect our teachers with a wider group of colleagues and connect to other school leaders.  All of these schools are refreshing their approaches to inquiry alongside their curriculum redevelopment following their revisioning process.

Lost Property - Is This Yours?
Thank you for the incredible response from my last newsletter regarding the lost property pile! We have a keen and dedicated group of parents that I am working with around the lost property we continue to have at Muritai School.  We met to brainstorm some solutions and created a strategy for 2019 - a very proactive group of Muritai parents and I have some excellent property return and display initiatives underway.
You may have seen the lost property is now positioned in full view in the office foyer and is called the ‘Is This Yours?’ area.

We encourage all parents to support their children to only wear clearly named clothing to school.  We endeavour to return all lost clothing to its owner’s class regularly. Unfortunately lots of the ‘found’ clothing is not named. Please do stop by the garment rack in the foyer to check if anything belongs at your house.

We are also spreading the ‘managing self’ message by reminding children to take their belongings home, please do remind them to come to the foyer if they have misplaced something.

Staff News:

Some of you may know Jess Davidson who worked at Muritai for several years, first as a teacher and then as the Associate Principal for the year 3/4 syndicate.  Jess was planning on returning to New Zealand and Muritai School (from maternity leave) this year but unfortunately, just before Christmas on the 23rd of December, Jess’s husband Julian, sadly died from a sudden heart attack.  Jess and her family had no warning, and are of course utterly devastated (Freya is 4, and Jack just 18 Months). The timing was particularly cruel being right on Christmas, and also as all of their belongings were halfway back to New Zealand ready for their return to us.

The school is supporting Jess where it can, and staff have been in contact with Jess over the past couple of months.  A Give-a-little page has been set up for Jess to provide some financial support during this difficult time which can be accessed at https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/julian-alan-davidson-loving-husband-and-dad-gone

After Drop off Walk and Talk with Bec:
Each fortnight I host a chat and a wander around Eastbourne with a coffee to follow at Hive Cafe. Our next walk and talk is on Tuesday 26th February.
Pushchairs welcome, as is skipping the walk and coming straight for a coffee around 9:30!

Learning Partnership Meetings
Thank you for the fabulous attendance rates at our recent learning partnership meetings.

If you were not able to attend either of the two afternoons, please contact your teacher directly to set up a meeting or perhaps a chat over the phone.  The learning partnership meetings are an important start to the home and school partnership that we grow over each year, and a chance for you to connect and develop a relationship with your child’s teacher.

We value your thinking and opinions on how the learning partnerships ran this year - please click on the link to provide any feedback.

Kind regards

FROM THE SCHOOL

SWIMMING SPORTS
We have our Swimming Sports day next Thursday 28 February.  Our Year 3-8 children will be heading off to Huia Pool at 9am and our Korora syndicate will be swimming at our local Eastbourne Pool from 12.30 onwards.  Further information will be coming out next week regarding timing of races.  We look forward to seeing you at the pools for an action packed day.

NEW PLAYGROUND MATTING
You may have noticed that at the end of last year we replaced the matting under our Junior School Playground, removing the old blue tiles and replacing it with a continuous rubber matting.  It looks wonderful and works extremely well.  We would like to recognise and thank both the Eastbourne Community Trust and Pelorus Trust for money granted to us to enable this project to be undertaken.

GIRLS FUTSAL TOURNAMENT
Earlier this week a group of Year 5/6 girls (Emily D, Marina N, Livvy K, Briar D, Poppy H, Jemima T and Una L) participated in a girls only futsal tournament at Walter Nash Stadium.

An action packed day included 8 games, each 10 minutes with four players aside. Our team played brilliantly together and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

The highlight of the day was meeting Maya Hahn, a former student of Muritai School, and other Football Ferns who recently competed in a women's world cup tournament and came 3rd.

A special thanks to all coaches and parents that supported their teams at the tournament.

The year 7/8 girls futsal team travelled to Walter Nash Stadium to play in a girls only futsal tournament. While they were there they saw Maya Harn and some other amazing futsal and football players, there to cheer the teams on. The Year 7 & 8 team had an amazing result they played eight 10 minute games; they won 7 of there games and drew the last one. They had so much fun. The team consisted of Hollie Ridley-Gibbons, Paige Bangma, Isabelle Buchanan, Isabelle Cook, Harriet Wilson and Izzy Kane. We had a great time and overall were very proud of the final result.

Guitar Lessons at Muritai School Do you want to learn to play guitar?  I am now accepting enrolments for Term 1 for pupils in years 3 to 8. The lessons are taken by Charles Hazlewood on Mondays or Fridays during school time. The tuition is held in small groups according to ability and age. It is educational, and normally a lot of fun!
The school has guitars to use at lesson time, but you will need a guitar to play at home. I am a very experienced music teacher currently teaching at several schools in Lower Hutt.

The cost will be $12 per 30 minute lesson, multiplied by the number of lessons to be held during the term. Usually there would be 8 lessons, so the term fees would be $96.
Please call Charles on 04-934-2759 or 029-9392759 or charleshazlewood1@gmail.com

Drum lessons available for Muritai students between years 3 and 8. Please email our drum tutor Andy Russell at andyrussellmusic@gmail.com for more information or to sign up.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Haere Mai and Welcome back to 2019 at Muritai School!

Yesterday was a very positive start to the year for us all as we welcomed tamariki back to school.  A special welcome to all of our new Muritai learners and families, we trust that you will quickly all be feeling settled, making new friends and launching into your learning to ‘Be the Best You Can Be’ at Muritai School.

Our Muritai staff have been working hard over the summer to design the learning that is taking place in our learning spaces this week, and taking part in days of professional learning themselves prior to the school year beginning.  Thank you to our teachers for spending so much time setting up our students for success by taking the time to create such special learning opportunities.  We certainly are a lucky school!

Thanks to Carole and Jo in our office who have been back at work since the 14th of January to ensure the whole school was ready to ‘hit the ground running’ on day one of the year.  Thanks also to Dan, Kevin, Sue and our wider support staff who have also put time and energy into creating the conditions for all of our success.  What a wonderful team!

Remember there is no school tomorrow - Wednesday the 6th February due to Waitangi Day.

I’ve visited the classes each day and can certainly report smiling, happy (and tired) faces on the children’s return to school after their summer break.

Look how happy the teachers were to be back at school!

Teacher Only Day Reminder - 15th February
Last year in our newsletters we gave advance warning of our upcoming Teacher Only Day - this is to be on Friday the 15th of February.  We are attending a professional learning day in conjunction with other Wellington schools to combine costs of a very special facilitator we have brought in from Australia - Kath Murdoch.  Kath is a renowned international expert on inquiry learning, and we feel very fortunate to get to hear her in person.  We really appreciate your support in having the teacher only day - we know that our Muritai  learners will benefit from the great ideas and professional learning our teachers will gain from the day.

Lost Property - Volunteers needed!
We have a dreadful pile of lost property after just two days at school! Our lost property often contains expensive, quality clothing that is not named and is never claimed.  We have decided to try a new strategy with our lost property in 2019 and are looking for parent or caregiver volunteers who can help us out.  Please email me at Principal@Muritai.school.nz if you are able to help.

After Drop off Walk and Talk with Bec:
Each fortnight I host a chat and a wander around Eastbourne with a coffee to follow at Hive Cafe. Our next walk and talk is on Tuesday 12th February.
Pushchairs welcome, as is skipping the walk and coming straight for a coffee around 9:30!

Learning Partnership Meetings
Each year we invite parents and caregivers to meet with the teacher to go through goals and aspirations for their children.

Our Learning Partnership parent meetings will be held on Monday 11 February 3:15 - 6.15 pm & Tuesday 19 February 3:15 - 6:15 pm. These meetings are an excellent opportunity for parents to meet the teacher and to share some thoughts and goals they may have about their child with the classroom teacher for 2019.

To help with this there is a template (below) that we recommend you complete and bring to the meeting to guide the discussion. Please note that school will finish at the normal time of 2:55.

Meetings are each set for 10 minutes. To make an appointment go to www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and enter the code x4dcj, phone Jo in the office 5628409 between 9am-3pm or email bentley@muritai.school.nz

These meetings are a great way to establish contact with your child’s teacher early in the school year, however, parents are reminded that they can arrange to meet at any time to discuss their child’s progress. The best method for doing this is to contact your child’s teacher directly by email.

We hope to see 100% of our parents and caregivers at these meetings.

Kind regards
Ngā Mihi
