FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome 

Wow! It is already the end of the term! We have had much to celebrate over the past ten weeks with fantastic learning in all areas of the curriculum along with many fantastic achievements of students in a wide range of activities.

A warm welcome is extended to Arlow Grace in Room 3 and his whanaū who have recently moved to Eastbourne. 

We are very fortunate to have Sue Fieldes here at Muritai school as our Librarian and we recently had a special celebration for her. She has been here for twenty five years in a variety of roles including working in classrooms and the office to now running the library. She has a wealth of knowledge that all staff and students, both current and previous, have benefited greatly from. To celebrate this great milestone, we had fun with staff and students dressed up as their favourite book characters and sharing this in a parade, despite the rainy weather. During the day, staff (both teaching and support staff) read books to children across the school and also did D.E.A.R. (drop everything and read). She is not leaving us so we will continue to gain from her experience, enthusiasm and enormous expertise.

A huge thanks to Andrew Saunderson (six years) and Jeremy Buckley (three years) for their enormous contribution as Board of Trustees members. They have both brought enormous   reasoning and clarity to the many different discussions that the Board of Trustees cover. We thank them for their time and commitment to our school. Thank you to those parents who put themselves forward for the latest election. Congratulations to our new board members and commiserations to those who missed out. 

 

Our Kapa Haka ropu have been very active doing wonderful performances over these past two weeks. They have been practising since term 2 and finally had the opportunity to perform to audiences at both the Eastbourne Library and at Hutt Fest. They were outstanding. They were very polished in their movements and the singing of the waiata was so beautiful with amazing harmonies. Thank you also to Tom for speaking in front of the huge audience and giving a clear explanation of why “He Honere’ was chosen. It is the waiata we sing each year as part of the Eastbourne ANZAC day service. Thanks to Ruth Hooke, Hilary Bevin and Brooke Davis for their wonderful efforts with Kapa Haka. Thanks also to the other staff members who also gave up their time to support these events.

A huge thank you to the many parents and staff who have taken part in the Winter codes in differing roles of coach, referees and supporters of our students. We appreciate you giving up your time for our students to take part in so many different physical activities.

Gotcha Celebrations 

This week the students have been taking part in a range of activities to celebrate their gotchas that they have earned throughout the term for exhibiting our school values. Kororā team visited our local beach.

SUN SAFETY

From the start of Term 4 all students need to be wearing a named sunhat (wide brimmed) and Year 7 and 8 a cap. For those of you who ordered them through our Home and School Fundraiser these will be given to your child on the first day back. 

Please make sure that your child has sunscreen applied and if they bring some for their own use to school please ensure that it is named.

A VISITOR 

Room 10 and all Kereru rugby players were treated to a visit from George Bower on Thursday. George is a Crusader and an All Black and he spoke to the children about hard work, resilience and taking opportunities that come your way with both hands. The kids were given the chance to ask their own questions to George and they were lucky enough to get signatures and individual photos with him. Not only is George an impeccable rugby player, but he is a humble, down to earth and all round solid guy. George is a brilliant role model for the kids, especially our budding rugby players; I have no doubt they will never forget meeting him - What a great experience for Kereru!

On starting school, our youngest learners receive a book to welcome them to school and start to their learning journey at Muritai. 

TERM 4 - Week 1 

There will be a Teacher Only Day on Friday 21st October adjoining Labour Weekend so mark your diaries for a four day weekend. School will be closed for students.

Reminder

If your child or children are moving or leaving Muritai School at the end of this year could you please email me if you haven’t already done so? On another note, we are unable to offer a teacher selection option to our parents, however, I do encourage you to email me at principal@muritai.school.nz if there is something you would like us to know or consider about your child that we need to be aware of when we begin class placements. All our students have a voice in our process as well and are able to select some students they work well alongside to be in their class for next year. We begin class placement drafts early in Term 4, the deadline for any input from parents is Friday October 21st - the end of the first week back. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

I have had a wonderful time working alongside families, my colleagues these past six months as acting Principal. Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to returning to my Deputy Principal position and working once again with Stu Devenport.

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Welcome to our New Board 

Thank you to everyone who voted in the recent election.  Welcome back to our incumbent board members, Kaye Sherwin, Lisa South and Kurt Renner and to our new board members, Matt McCorkindale and Joanne Neilson. 

We wish to thank everyone who put their name forward to be considered for the Board of Trustees, Adam Edwards, Howard Grigg, Rupert Mackintosh, Suzanne Roff for what proved to be a close election.

The first board meeting will be on 2 November 2022.  Community members are welcome to attend board meetings which are open to the public but are not public meetings.  In other words, you may attend and listen but you may not speak unless you have requested to speak in advance through the Presiding Member.

Enviro Holiday Activities

Elodie Dent Y7 has been working on some fun holiday activities for fellow Muritai learners. They involve getting into nature and being creative. This is something we could add to each holidays involving new activities and ideas from other Muritai students. 

I have created an easy template that we can build on over time, creating a large resource full of environmentally friendly fun (see below)

 

AIMS Games

I was really proud to represent Muritai at the AIMS games recently. I wasn't sure what to expect but when I arrived and saw the 3km course with crazy hills, hurdles and that there were 130 kids in my race I felt quite daunted ! The event itself was incredible. It was a fun opportunity to meet  people from other schools. The race was a super fast pace with the course record being broken. I ran as best as I could and was pleased to come 23rd with a time of 12 minutes 56 seconds.

Kenzie and Elizabeth competed in the aims games up in Tauranga, where they competed in the gymnastics event representing Muritai school,  enjoying the competition with no stress and just fun. There were only seven people competing at that level, all of them from different places across New Zealand. Although there were no medals for apparatus placings, Elizabeth would have come third on beam and vault and Kenzie would have come third on bar.

Year 4 - Muritai Lakers kids-basketball team

We have had a great season with all the players contributing well. The final was a tough one against a really good opposition who had great defence. 

We played really well as a team and ended winning 12-6. 

We are expecting some contract offers from top American universities over the next few weeks.

Futsal

On Tuesday 20th September, the Year 7 Futsal team went for a day tournament at Walter Nash Sports Centre. The team included Eli Wylie, Seb Bodden, Chamber Pearce, Guy Marshall, Elodie Dent, Max Longley, Ben Mitchell and Zach Neilson. Excitement was high as we left school and made our way to Walter Nash sports Centre. Bottle flipping kept us busy while we were waiting between games, with Ben Mitchell being the best bottle flipper. We played four games against different schools from across Wellington and won all of our matches. We had great fun while we were playing and even did a couple of cool tricks. We would like to say thank you to Trish Theobald for organising our team to enter, Jane Dent who gave us coaching and all of the parents who volunteered to transport us to the tournament.

Thank you so much for supporting my school lunch business. Just to let you all know I am moving to Raumati. I would very much like to continue providing lunches for your children. 

In order to be able to do this, I will need to alter the payment structure.

What this looks like is a one-off payment per term $70.50.This would provide 10 lunches. 

If I gain enough interest, I will then look forward to continuing making sushi for your lovely children.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

It has been another busy two weeks with lots of engaging learning experiences and opportunities going on at our kura. It is Māori Language Week - Te Wiki o te Reo Māori and the students have been involved in lots of tikanga and te reo and practicing our new school karakia.

Our Kapa Haka performance group is sounding amazing and will be performing at Eastbourne Library next Tuesday September 20th at 1 p.m. I do hope you can pop in and watch them. They will be taking part in Hutt Fest alongside other schools from around the Hutt Valley the following week.

With the passing of Queen Elizabeth 2nd, we will be closing our school on Monday September 26th to enable everyone to pay their respects. 

Having the Pukutakaro programme running over the past two weeks has been great. The students have interacted with a range of different pieces of equipment. They have learnt to explore the same equipment in a variety of ways, work together and have a go. Thank you to those parents who also came along to the after school sessions.

Last week we had a WOW week which involved the students across the school taking part in a variety of art projects to beautify the spaces around our school. Among the activities were making gardens, decorating stones, painting murals and studying artists.

KAHU ART ATTACK

Refurbishing our murals to reflect our school values

During Art Attack in Term 3, we created various pieces of art to brighten up our school grounds. In this project we created murals, class signs and puzzle pieces. It was worth the time and effort because what we made was outstanding and made the school look like an art gallery. Personally, art attack has been really enjoyable, especially working with my friends and the art ambassadors who were always willing to help. Thank you to the teachers for helping us build a great school community and helping us “paint” the picture that we had in our minds.

BUDDIES

Each child across the school is either a little buddy or a big buddy. Today Rooms 3 and 9 worked together to plant some seeds. 

ONESIE / PYJAMA DAY

We raised $556.30 and the community donated lots of gifts of food, beds, toys and towels for the SPCA. These items and the money was delivered to the SPCA store in Lower Hutt who were extremely grateful and ‘blown away’ with all the donations. They wanted to thank the children of Muritai School in particular for all their kind thoughts.  A huge thank you to our Year 7 and 8 Charity ambassadors - AJ, Mia, Olivia, Kayla and Sabine for their work in organising this fun event.

DRESS UP AS YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK CHARACTER 

Next Friday we are all dressing up as a book character - this will be a fun day and there is no donation involved. Sue, our wonderful librarian, has been at Muritai for twenty five years and we are going to celebrate this amazing milestone. She is not leaving. We are so lucky to have her - she has a wealth of knowledge which she shares with every student. I wonder what you will be dressed up as?

WORKING BEE

Next Saturday September 24th we are going to have a working bee to tidy up and refresh some of the areas in our senior school. Thank you to those families who have already offered to come along and help. It will be from 10 a.m. for about an hour or so. If you have any suitable tools, spades, wheelbarrows, gloves, secateurs, etc, please bring them along.  We’ll have a cup of tea or coffee with biscuits together, after our work.

SCHOOL ASSEMBLY

Today our Tūī team hosted and shared some amazing learning that they have been involved in over this term. It was great to see the artwork, listen to poems, learn about the technology process leading up to our market day in Term 4 along with finding out where some of our staff come from when asked No hea koe?

MURITAI BAND

Muritai School band, “Lords of Confusion” performed two songs at Bandquest 2022 which was held at Sacred Heart High School on Saturday night the 3rd of September. Lords of Confusion won the “Rockstar Styles Award” with the judges commenting “we loved the outfits you rock…. you played together like a group with great movement and performance!”. Lords of Confusion were one of many bands that entered; there were many others from schools such as Hutt Intermediate and Rangikura. Thank you to Charles and Ruth for preparing us for our two songs which were Money by Berry Gordie and Home Sweet Home by Motley Crew and to the parent helpers on the night - Fitri Salma and Martin Cooper. Also a huge thanks to Rockshop who sponsored the event. Band members included Bodhi Kane, Finlaeic Forde, Eloise Mathewson, Dilyan Kusnadi, Elliott Halman, Rory Maxwell-Lamb, and Jagger Lissette.  The photo below demonstrates our great rock-style look.

CONGRATULATIONS STIRLING TITO

Stirling recently played in the 'S Series' of 3 Tennis Tournaments where he was very successful, winning his division in 2 of the 3 Tournaments and dropping only one match in the Series. 

This resulted in Stirling being named as one of 3 S series champions from the entire Series.

FUTSAL

Two teams from Kereru recently had the chance to take part in a Fun Futsal Festival run by Lower Hutt Primary School Sports Association. The focus of the event was on "having a go", with many players trying out the sport of Futsal for the first time.

Teams played 5 fast-paced games over the day at Walter Nash Stadium. The Year 5 team, Muritai PSG, finished the day with 3 wins and every member of the team getting on the scoreboard. The players adapted quickly to the fast moving style of the game, and came home keen to play again.

The Year 6 Futsal team had a great day at the tournament displaying some skilful play in retaining possession, utilising all team members and relentless defence work.

There was some exemplary sporting play both towards the opposition and each other making for some hard fought but fun contests!!  They won 3 of their games, drew 1 and lost 1.  

Kahu teams have their own Futsal Festival coming up on 20 September.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

NAUMAI, HAERE MAI, WELCOME

What another fantastic week we have had! We had a wonderful Mihi Whakatau today with our Kahu students leading this superbly. We officially welcomed thirty two students and their whānau to our school including Leela Verhaeghe, Charlotte Ashe, Tess Thomas, Harvey Tubbs and Josh Fanning who have just joined Room 3. 

We have also had an amazing turnout from parents and the wider community to our Art Exhibition. Over the past ten weeks all students have been involved in a science based inquiry around Planet Earth and Beyond where they have investigated and pursued a wide range of activities where students have learnt about the Earth’s subsystems - geoshpere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere and that they are interdependent and all are important. Students then had to create a piece of art themed around this which went on display at the Art Exhibition. Thank you everyone for supporting this event and for the positive feedback. The children were certainly very proud to share their learning with you.

The collaborative art on the canvases for the silent auction were also amazing and all so different. Thank you to those people who put bids in - if you were the highest bidder you will be contacted to come into the office to pay and collect it. 

FROM THE TEAMS

Team Kororā were very excited to go on their first trip away from school in two years. They had an amazing day at Space Place and the Cable Car. Thank you to those parents who gave up their time to accompany them. They were also excited to finally be returning to visits to East Harbour Kindergarten and being hosts to the Barnardos and Kindergarten children here at school.

Kereru Team presented a wonderful assembly of their amazing learning.  We are looking forward to Tūī team presenting at next week’s assembly. Parents of students in Tūī are warmly invited to join us for this. 

SAFETY WORK

You may have noticed that there are some different locking systems on our gates along with a new fence built between Muritai Road and Oroua Street to keep our students safe from the busy roads. 

DAFFODIL DAY 

Thank you for supporting our Year 7 and 8 Charity Ambassadors by purchasing a yellow ribbon for Daffodil Day. We received $352 in donations from children and parents.  Thank you to everyone who donated.

ONESIE / PYJAMA DAY

Next Friday September 9th the Charity Ambassadors have organised a Onesie/Pyjama day with proceeds going to the SPCA. Your child can dress up in their onesie or pyjamas and wear them at school for the day. They can either bring a gold coin donation or bring along food or toys for the animals to play with or small blankets. There will be a box in the office foyer for the items to be placed in.

DRESS UP AS YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK CHARACTER 

Sue Fieldes has worked at Muritai School for the past twenty five years and will be continuing to do so. (She is not leaving!) We want to celebrate the years of service she has already done in classrooms, in the office and latterly in the library. Sue has a wealth of knowledge and experience that we all benefit from so we want to acknowledge that. We will be having the dress up day on Friday September 23rd. 

PEER MEDIATION 

Our Year 6 students have an opportunity to become Peer Mediators and work alongside students in the playground. They develop their leadership and listening skills and support students in the playground each lunchtime. Leo Reed is one of our Peer Mediators and this week he has spent his lunchtime organising a game for over thirty students.

125th CELEBRATION

Planning is well underway for our 125th Celebration in 2023. Our next meeting will be on 

Thursday September 15th at 4 pm and you are invited to join us if you would like to be part of this committee. We will be meeting in the school staffroom. 

SCHOOL AT FIVE INFORMATION EVENING 

Next week on Thursday September 8th we are having a ‘Starting School at Five’ parent information evening for parents of preschool children in our school staffroom at 7.30 p.m.

Mask Mandate

The Muritai School BOT would like to express our gratitude to everyone for helping to keep our staff and students safe by wearing their masks.  We have noticed a significant decrease in sickness in both students and staff since we have mandatory mask wearing which we are really pleased about.  So thanks again for all of your efforts, it’s much appreciated.

Artist visiting kahu 

Kahu team were very lucky to have Jutta Chisolm come to speak to us and share her talents. Jutta grew up in Eastbourne, attended Muritai School and her two grown sons also attended Muritai School. She has been researching for many years about the difficult Turkic art form Ebru, which is a type of marbling born in central Asia. 

Jutta Chisolm came in to show us what Ebru marbling is, first she went over the 3 big questions she asks herself before creating an artwork. Artwork needs emotion so she asks herself what she wants the artwork to represent, then she asks herself what she wants to do the artwork on, and lastly she asks herself what tools to use. If she wants a cleaner result she might use a pen but if she wants a messier result she might use oil paints. 

She demonstrated how to mix pigments, and showed us how vibrant pure pigment is. She showed us all the materials she used and how she used them in her artwork. She started her art: first she poured in the liquid that will hold the pigment up once put on, it’s kind of like thick water, then she started splattering the pigment in the thick water. We watched as she made a beautiful pattern, she used blocks of wood with nails sticking out and made patterns in the water and pigment. Once looking nice she dipped in her shell. She made her shells by making clay ones and turning them into moulds by putting plaster around it and letting it dry, then she poured wax in to test, and they came out great! 

The art ambassadors got to experiment with her paints and other things she brought along. Overall we all enjoyed her presentation and learnt a lot of techniques as well as learning about some history.

Mathswell Competition Year 7 and 8 

On Tuesday the 30th of August, 6 Year 7 and 8 students traveled to HIBS for the 2022 Wellington Mathswell competition. The first part of the competition was problem solving, where a team of 3 would be given a problem and they had to solve it, they were only allowed 2 guesses per problem and if it got too hard they could pass. There were a total of 13 questions to be answered in 15 minutes. 

The second part of the competition was multi choice questions where another team of 3 had 10 minutes to answer 15 questions, 6 of those questions had to be answered within the first 5 minutes. 

There were 2 rounds of each part with the original problem solving team doing the second multi choice round and vice versa There were 40 teams from schools all over Wellington participating and having fun! The Muritai team, made up of 3 Year 7s - Ferghus, Izzy and Miriam and 3 Year 8s - Cameron, Coco and Sabine did very well, collectively scoring 43 out of 50 and finishing the competition in 14th place!

Muritai School Hip Hop dancers

There are many of our Muritai school students who currently attend Pump Dance here in Eastbourne and recently competed in the New Zealand Schools Hip Hop Regional championship which was held here in Wellington. All the dancers did really well and it was great to see so many Muritai students dancing their hearts out.

A big shout out to the following girls who made it through to the Hip Hop Nationals as a crew which will be held here in Wellington in September:  Saffi Hatcliffe, Charlotte Claridge, Olive Day, Eirinn Houston, Lucy Sherwin and Lily Manson.  Lucy and Eirinn have also made it through to Nationals in their Duo dance. Great work dancers!!

Congratulations

Congratulations to Cooper Keenan, Harper Calder and Charlie Halford who have all won a place with Hutt Valley rep basketball teams.  Well done!

Scholastic Lucky Book Club

Issue six of the Scholastic Lucky Book Club, for 2022, is now available. Orders will be closing at Noon on Monday the 12th September. Your order can be done on the following website https://my bookclub.scholastic.co.nz/Parent/Login.aspx. 

The whole school order is processed on the closing date and it usually takes approximately a week for orders to be delivered.

We greatly appreciate your support as the school is able to gain rewards through purchases you make which enables us to add books to our school library collection.

Pukutākaro

Muritai School will be hosting the Hutt City Council’s Active in the Hutt team Pukutākaro programme.  Pukutākaro is a programme designed to grow the amount of active play that our tamariki enjoy outside of classroom hours.  It is free and consists of a van full of ‘big ticket’ sports equipment and other ‘wow’ items that our young people might typically not get the opportunity to play with.  The programme will be set up at school on Monday 5 September through to Thursday 15 September for use during the lunch times. It will be lots of fun! They will also be here after school on those dates for parents to join in with a range of fun play activities with their children.

School Band

Muritai's band 'Lords Of Confusion' are playing in the Bandquest competition this coming Saturday - September 3rd. They are sounding so good!!!!!!  It would be great to have some support for them so if you are a music lover please feel free to come and be in the audience .

The show is being held at Sacred Heart , Laings Rd , Lower Hutt. It starts at 6.30pm and is expected to finish at 9.00pm. Tickets will be sold at the door from 6.00pm - $20.00 per adult , $10 for schools students and unders 6’s free (cash and EFTPOS available).Family and friends are encouraged to join and show support.

The band members are - Finlaeic Forder- bass guitar, Bodhi Kane - guitar, Rory Maxwell Lamb - kets, Jagger Lissette - drums, Eliose Mathewson - vocals, Dilyan Kusnadi - vocals, Elliott Halman - vocals.
