Bird's Eye View -
November 28, 2012

Naumai e te whanau o te kura Muritai
Tena koutou katoa

Welcome to our new students - Jake and Zoe Inskeep, Callista Ross and Annie Isaacs and Mathew Russell and Izzy Cooper-Kane. Our current roll is 462 pupils which is the highest it has been for many years.

As we head into the last month of school the weather is noticeably warmer and the days are longer. Please try and make sure the children are well rested. Despite EOTC weeks and swimming starting we still have learning activities to complete before the end of the year.

Congratulations to teacher Murray McMillan and his partner Kate. Their little boy Marco arrived 6 weeks early and is now home safe and well. We welcome Peter Hull back to the staff and he is teaching in year 7-8 while Lisa Allen takes some leave.

Thank you all for your contribution to our bi-annual Eastbourne Village Carnival. It was an outstanding success and a fantastic day yet again.

Our Carnival Committee, coordinated by Penny Stock and Julie Parker, should be very proud of themselves and deserve a well earned rest after the weekend.  It was wonderful to see so many families pitching in and helping out on the different stalls - there were even families who no longer have children at the school helping with cooking and having a great time.  It all helps to create a wonderful atmosphere.

It was also wonderful to see so many children involved in helping create such a successful day. We are aiming to purchase some ICT equipment with the fundraising to replenish our aging fleet of equipment.

A special thank you to the Plant Stall team for donating plants for the school butterfly gardens in the junior courtyard.  Mrs Ryan and the students will be planting these over the next few days.

GENESIS MEAN GREEN HOUSE COMPETITION

In the last Bird's Eye View we congratulated a group of our year 5-6 students on winning the Genesis Mean Green House competition.  The children involved received generous Jaycar gift vouchers to be used in-store or online.  The school also received an exciting prize pack of fun educational activities including:

- hand-crank generator
- solar car kits
- Solar eclipse glasses
- Light diffraction glasses
- uv beads
- solar electricity circuit kits

These will be used by students to support them in their learning of solar energy and sustainability.  We are looking forward to using these wonderful resources in our classrooms and being able to show you the results.

TOUCH RUGBY
Our touch teams have been playing extremely well this season and have finals this week.  Presentations will be made straight after the game.  This year each grade seems to be huge and so making the A final is extremely difficult with tries scored being vital in determining who plays the A finals. Congratulations to Muritai Sprint (Y5-6 mixed) and Muritai Hustle (Y5-6 boys) who have both made it to the B Finals. Come along and support our teams.  They are playing at Hutt Park, Seaview this Friday afternoon.

CUP STACKING WORLD RECORD

On November 15th Room 12 was involved in the WSSA's yearly attempt at breaking the Guinness World Record mark for "Most People Sport Stacking at Multiple Locations in One Day." The 'Stack Up' is  what Guinness World Records® terms the “World’s Largest Sport Stacking Event.”  During the course of the Guinness World Records Day, sport stackers from all reaches of the world will be up stacking and down stacking various pyramids in prescribed patterns at lightning speed for at least 30 minutes.  Room 12 were the first in the world to verify which was a great privilege.  You can check out the total number of stackers by going to the following website: http://www.thewssa.com/

TASMANIAN DEVIL
Oscar Zuijderwijk in room 8 entered the tearaway to Tasmania What Now competition. He made a fantastic model but unfortunately didn’t win. His Tasmanian devil was shown on TV last Sunday.  Better luck next time Oscar.
