20 February 2013

As we work through week 3 the school is very settled. Timetables are up and running and children are starting to get their teeth into some good learning. Teachers are well planned and the full width of our curriculum is up and running. A reminder that despite considerable national importance placed on literacy and maths we operate a full curriculum with eight learning strands that we squeeze into the 25 hours contact time.

Thank you for your attendance at the parent interviews last week. These short interviews are a nice opportunity to touch base with the teacher and start the parent/teacher relationship for the year.

At all times teachers are available to meet with you to discuss any issues you may have. Please be respectful regarding times however, especially with pop-in chats after school. A teacher's week is a busy week. On Monday teachers attend a weekly staff meeting where we collectively work on school development. On Tuesday each team meets to discuss student performance and team organisation. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday book work is marked and assessed and the following week is planned and organised, plus teachers' individual school-wide responsibilities are adhered to.

CHRISTCHURCH
I would like to offer our thoughts to the school communities in Christchurch regarding the Minister's announcement on Monday of closures of schools and mergers between schools. There has been and will be considerable change in Christchurch going forward but we at Muritai are aware of how important a role Christchurch schools play in their local communities, and in particular their remarkable response in the immediate aftermath of the February 22nd earthquakes. For many children, parents and teachers Monday was a very tough day for education in Christchurch.

ANN HARRIS
Last Friday many of the staff and students attended the funeral of our colleague Ann Harris. Ann was a wonderful friend to us all and had spent the last 2 years in the senior school working with children needing learning support to prepare them for college. Our thoughts go out to Ann's family at this difficult time

ROAD SAFETY AT SCHOOL
A reminder about road safety around our school premises. We need to be so careful in everything we do around our school as our children can be very unpredictable in their decision-making around the roads.  The police will be visiting our roads at school time once a week and tickets will be issued if your are not following the laws of our roads. Please model good behaviour at all times and please, please support our road patrollers -
  • Speed limits around school are 40kph
  • Please use the crossing on Muritai Rd
  • Please do not park in the disabled car park - that is specifically for our children with disabilities
  • Please do not double park
  • Please do not park in the bus stop between 2.30-3.00
NO MURITAI MUNCHIES 8 AND 11 MARCH
Please note there will be no Muritai Munchies on Friday 8 March and Monday 11 March as both Sandra and Francie will be away.

SENIOR SCHOOL TE PAPA TRIP
The Senior School had a great time at Te Papa last week learning about the Treaty of Waitangi. It was really interesting learning about why the Treaty was signed, the differences between the English and Maori translations  and the differing opinions people have about it now. The students of Room 22 were also lucky enough to visit the National Archives and view the original Treaty document! A special thanks to all the parents who helped out on the day.
