THURSDAY 21 MAY 2015

Kia ora koutou katoa.

Welcome to our new children that have started at Muritai School - Joe Kanjanaphat and Jagger Lisette.

As we fast approach the middle of the term we are enjoying the slightly different pace of term 2. Walking through the rooms sees a rich tapestry of quality learning - the children are well engaged and the atmosphere of each classroom is quite lovely. Each class has built a team and while some of the work being done is individual, some of the work is collaborative and team based. It is all designed to make our children grow as people.

Our junior school is as always a very busy area of the school. Some of the flow of recent activities have involved -
  • We have had all our local early learning centres (Kindy, Playcentre, Early learning centre) visiting frequently
  • Completed the third parent information evening on curriculum completing how children learn and progress in reading, writing, maths
  • Visited the Planetarium at the Carter Observatory
  • PMP (Perceptual Motor Program) has started in room 2 for this term.

DAV PILKEY

Captain Underpants author Dav Pilkey has travelled to New Zealand to be a guest at the Auckland Writers Festival.  He also visited Wellington recently to meet his fans and some of our Muritai students were lucky enough to go along and meet him.  Below is Luke Tait and Izzy Carroll’s account of their trip.
On Wednesday 20 May, twenty one Muritai students went to see Dav Pilkey.  He was talking at Eastern Hutt School in Lower Hutt.  He told us about a new book he was writing called Captain Underpants and the Sensational Saga of Sir-Stink-a-Lot.  There is also a new movie of Captain Underpants, which is animated and coming out in 2017.  Did you know why his name is ‘Dav’ but pronounced ‘Dave’?  Well he used to work in Pizza Hut.  He didn’t like his name with an E so he changed it to Dav!  He also read us a chapter of Dogman (full story) which is coming out next year!  We thoroughly enjoyed it and Dav even signed our books.

THANK YOU
Last Saturday some hardy parents worked in the gardens planting around the library and tidying up the Oroua St entrance garden. There is still some work to do but we have made good progress and it is coming together nicely. Our next tasks is to plant the trees and Matt Diederich from Quercus Landscaping is helping us with that. Thanks to Kate Brownsword for leading this process - it is going to look great is the spring!

Zone cross country
Our Y4-6 cross-country team performed with real distinction at the Zone event at Boulcott School. While placings were hard to come by a real feature was the strength of the team and with the 8 children in each of the 6 categories we managed to bring each year group team home mostly in the top 10. It was a real lift to the Muritai supporters to see the green sweep through towards to top. This top effort saw Muritai comfortably secure second place overall behind Waterloo and ahead of Eastern Hutt.
Congratulations to our placegetters…
Rosa Blair - 1st year 4 girls
Mia Campbell - 2nd year 4 girls
Great Woolloff - 2nd year 5 girls
Fraser Bellis - 3rd year 5 boys
