FRIDAY 21 AUGUST 2015

Naumai e te whanau o te kura Muritai
Kia ora koutou

Today marks the end of week 5 and we have reached the mid-point of term 3.

This week our thoughts are with our teaching colleague Ruth Hooke. Ruth’s husband Steve passed away after battling a short illness. The funeral for Steve is tomorrow at Wellesley at 3pm. Steve was a great parent and friend of Muritai and the staff. He will be sorely missed by us all. Ruth has requested privacy at this time for her and Millie and I’m sure you can respect that wish.

We have had a very productive week at Muritai. Children completed their fact-a-thon testing and are starting to turn their fundraising money in for our new science room. It has been an exciting process for most and this extra attention on basic facts at home is much appreciated by the teaching staff. Our thanks to the Home and School team for putting this together. The disco was a huge success last Friday - again thanks to the parents and staff who provided supervision.

The children are working hard in class. As I walk around the school I see each room immersed in the learning task of the time. Each class has a unique feel to it as each class is different. It really is a joy to move through the school and see the children so highly engaged, part of the process and trying to do their very best. Often you see the teacher with a child showing them how to do something or encouraging them to keep trying to get their job done, to have the belief that they can do it. As a staff we are working through development on understanding ‘Well-being at School’ and the role we play in creating classrooms where children can flourish and be confident, connected active learners. It is an interesting journey as we work through the science of it all, but extremely rewarding as we reflect on the things we do and how to make our classroom environments right for all children.

The staff are committed to lots of additional activities during the day - some involve large groups, some smaller more intimate groups with lots of activities available to the children. It is so nice to see the children at lunchtimes relaxing and reading in the school library for example. So on top of 3 lunch and play duties, staff complete an extra lunch or playtime activity with the children. We are very lucky with this extra commitment at Muritai from the staff and we enjoy the extra commitment from parents who also pop in and take groups such as sports, music etc. So Muritai, despite been a calm place to be, is also a very busy place to be!

YEAR 5-8 PRODUCTION “THE ELEMENTS”

Students are starting to work on their costumes and art works for our Production this year which is based on the four elements of fire, water, earth and air.  Performances will be on:

Thursday 17 September Evening Performance at 7pm

Tickets will be available for purchase from Tuesday next week from the school office - adults $8.00, children and seniors $5 each.

NUDE FOOD
Nude food is picking up momentum. This year as part of our Enviro work we are trying to reduce our quota of waste that goes to the landfill. We are conscious that much of today’s world is wrapped in plastic and at Muritai we would like to begin the process of reducing our waste Thank you for reducing the packaging in your child’s lunchbox.  In the next couple of weeks we will send home some information on lunch box packaging.  We would like to encourage this initiative as part of our Enviro school ethos. Thanks for your on-going support.

TOWARDS 2020.
The Board of Trustees and the staff have been working on planning ahead to develop some strategic ideas to take Muritai forward to the year 2020. The Board would like to invite parents to a ‘forward thinking session’ on Monday the 7th September from 7.30pm. If you would like to come along and be part of the process we would love to see you there.

To help start your thinking have a look at this wonderful talk on education from 2013 by Sir Ken Robinson.

EPRO8 CHALLENGE
We have two teams of year 5/6 students and two teams of year 7/8 student entered for the Epro8 Challenge which begins next week.
The Epro8 Challenge is an engineering and problem solving race and competition where school teams compete to build large sized structures, operate a real robotic arm, solve practical problems, invent machines that can complete simple tasks, complete a general knowledge test and undertake unusual experiments.  The teams are given a list of the challenges and have to choose which they will undertake.  The harder the challenge, the more points it is worth.  Strategy is required as there is not enough time to finish all the challenges.  The top four teams from each heat qualify for the Wellington wide semi-finals and finals.

We wish them all good luck.

SPORTS
Gymnastics
Rosa Blair won the Step 4 Gym competition held in Levin this weekend and the weekend prior she won the Rimutaka Step 4 Competition.  A very talented gymnast - well done Rosa.

Basketball
This year we have three basketball teams, our experienced year 7 and 8’s and year 5 and 6 team and now a year 1 and 2 team. The new year 1 and 2 team have just started and we hope they will do as well as the older teams.  We applied for funding from Pelorus Trust for new uniforms for the 3 teams as our old ones were a little shabby and have been given a grant of $900 to go towards these.  A big thank you to Pelorus Trust.  Our teams are going to look spectacular!

Soccer
On Tuesday the 18th of August at 12.15pm a group of Year 7 & 8 students went to Bishops Park to play against the Wellesley B team. The Muritai team played really well and won 7-4.  Alice McFarlane scored a hat-trick, and the other goals were scored by Matthew Jones (2), Macey Caughley and Ella Giles. Overall they really enjoyed themselves and would love to do it again. Thanks to everyone who came down and supported them!!!!
By Macey Caughley.

Yoga
The Year 5 & 6 syndicate will be doing some Yoga with Jeanne Balding-Weinstock, a 'local' resident who has expertise in children's yoga.   She will be working with each class over the rest of the term beginning in week 7.  It would be great if the students can ensure they wear comfortable clothing for their sessions.  If there are any families that have a yoga mat, it would be good if they can make that available for their children to use.  Each class teacher has the days that each class session will take place.

ARTSPLASH AND DANCESPLASH
