FRIDAY 12 AUGUST 2016

Tena Koutou katoa
Naumai e te whanau o te kura Muritai

A warm welcome to Nicolai Wilson-Gray, Isabella Andrew and Tilly Saunderson who have turned five and join room 2 this week.  We also welcome Mrs Nina Gude as a student teacher working with Michelle Hollard in Room 13.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
What an exciting week watching the Olympics and of course the Hurricanes win. Our own sport is going well too.

Well done to our newest sports team - the TiniBall and Miniball league team. The Tiniball team played their very first game and won against Korokoro 14 - 4. Our team Seb, Tom, George, Luke, Raff, Eva and Mia are now looking forward to playing their next game!

This week has been Maths Week across New Zealand. NZ Maths Week is an opportunity for students to undertake a number of fun challenges. I have also been in classes watching mathematics lessons.
Room 3 have celebrated their 100 days at school while our youngest students in room 2 have been learning to accurately write and recognise the numbers to ten.

Problem Solving is a big focus across the school and the following are some problems that the students have been involved in. Have a go and see what strategies you would use to solve these or ask your child to explain their thinking to you.

Our Year 1 and 2 work on problems such as “Noah watched the animals going into the ark. He was counting and by noon he got to 12, but he was only counting the legs of the animals.” How many creatures did he see? See if you can find other answers. Tell someone how you found your answers out.
At the Year 7 and 8 level in Room 23 they have been working on the following -
  • A floor of the Earth Tower has a car park with 46 rows for cars and each row can fit 58 cars. How many cars will fit in the car park?
  • The Sea Tower has 38 floors and each floor has 47 windows. How many windows has the Sea Tower?
  • Even Park has a stand that has 7 rows and each row has 56 seats. How many people can be seated in that stand?
  • Marti is making up Christmas Socks to sell in the local dairy. If he has 89 socks and is going to put 23 toys in each sock, how many toys will he need?
  • Gill can save $34 a week packing shelves at the supermarket. She wants to earn $2,000 for a holiday. How many days must she work to save up that much money?

If you wish to try a variety of mathematics activities at home along with Mathletics go to www.nzmaths.co.nz and go to the families section.

Staff and students are preparing for our upcoming Production. You will be receiving information about what your child is involved in and what costuming that they will be needing from your child’s teacher. If you have any questions about the Production please contact your child’s teacher or Lisa Allen.
As I am writing this the disco is in full swing so thank you so much for supporting this.
Have a great weekend.
Maureen Buckley

FROM THE SCHOOL

ENVIRO NEWS
Just a gentle reminder to keep our lunch boxes plastic free where possible.
The litter that blows around the school is made up of a lot of lunch box waste, particularly single use plastic such as snack bar wrappers and plastic chippie bags.  As an Enviro School we have tried hard in the past to reduce the amount of waste we create, and to encourage healthy eating within our school.

It would be appreciated if you could check your lunch boxes to see if you can reduce the amount of plastic waste coming to school.
Secondly, we are on the hunt for old sacks and old (even single) gardening gloves that you no longer use.  If you would like to donate them to the school we will use them when we participate in our community and beach cleanups, rather than the Council plastic bags and latex gloves which simply add to the waste we collect.  Please send any items to Ms Algar  in Room 12.
Many thanks, EnviroTeam

NETBALL
Yesterday the Year 5 and Year 6 Netball teams played in the Central Zone Netball Tournament.  The Muritai Silver Bullets (Year 5) won all their games, and were the overall winners. They only had two goals scored against them in the entire tournament!

The Year 6 Muritai Magics also played and won 2 of their games, lost 1 and drew 1.  They played well and enjoyed the Tournament.

Well done girls! A big thanks also to our parent helpers, Gretchen Campbell, Hayley Roche, Anne-Marie Miller, Tony Irvine and Nicole Manning.

      WHOLE SCHOOL PRODUCTION
Production plans are now well under way.  The school is buzzing with creativity, music, dance and different ideas.
The theme for our production this year is BROADWAY.  We have an excellent selection of musicals for you with something for everyone.
This year the children are taking leadership with the year 7 and 8 students writing the script and they have done a wonderful job. I promise that you will be fully entertained and have a few laughs too. There are even a few Dad jokes in there to make you giggle.  Two of the main actors will be playing a moody teenager. Joshua Toomath and Saxon Forbes will have you groaning and giggling. I am sure many of you will be able to relate to this teenage-like behaviour!
The senior students are also being trained to do the sound and lighting.  In the past teachers have done these roles. Students will also be taking charge of blending the music and helping to keep things smooth backstage.  Plans for the entrance are underway and students are designing artwork to make the foyer look like a New York street. They are bursting with ideas. We will have buskers, beggars and food stalls.
Don’t worry about feeding your children before they come on the night as we are busy organising a hotdog stall and popcorn.  These will be available on the night time performances only.  Although these stalls will be run by senior students we will need some parent help with these each night. (Does anyone have a spare Hot-Dog cart lying around?)  Please contact Lisa Allen is you think you could help out allen@muritai.school.nz
If you would like to help with the production, making costumes, helping the children get ready on the night etc, please contact the classroom teacher.

HEALTH INFORMATION FROM REGIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH
There are currently three cases of measles (English measles) in the Wellington region.

Measles is a highly infectious and serious illness.  If measles occurs in our school all students and staff (teaching, administration, etc) will be required to have written evidence that they have either had two doses of measles vaccine (MMR) after they were 12 months of age or doctor diagnosed measles, to be at school.  Anyone who does not have evidence of measles protection will be required to stay off school until 14 days after their last contact with the infectious person.  This may be extended if there are further cases at the school.

For further information on measles and measles immunisation, please visit the Ministry of Health website www.health.govt.nz/measles or the Immunisation Advisory Centre website www.immune.org.nz.  You can also call the Immunisation Advisory Centre toll-free on 0800 IMMUNE (0800 466 863) for advice.

CARNIVAL
Are you in a band? Can sing a bit? Play the guitar? Fancy a shot at local stardom (or know someone that does)? Eastbourne Carnival needs you. We're looking for acts that can play for between 15 and 30 minutes. We provide the stage, lights and sound....you provide the talent! If you are interested please call Chris on 02108127296.
