FRIDAY 9 SEPTEMBER 2016

Tena Koutou katoa
Naumai e te whanau o te kura Muritai

A warm welcome to Meila Davis who has started school in room 2 and Madeleine Gilray who has joined room 1.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Spring has arrived and so has the changeable weather that it brings. The children certainly loved all the hail!
It’s all go around here this week. Final touches are being added to the Production items - the stage has arrived and the foyer is being decorated in anticipation for next week’s shows.  We have completely sold out of tickets for all our evening performances with a few left for the Tuesday matinee. You can still purchase tickets for hotdogs from our office.

Thank you so much to those parents who have helped with staging, costuming and the myriad of other things that need to be done behind the scenes to make our production a success. It is very much appreciated. You will have received information from your child’s teacher about arrival times and collection of your child before and after performances. Thank you also for your patience in collecting your child/ren so that staff could attend the union meeting yesterday to hear about the proposals.

Next week is Conservation Week so from September 10th to 18th we have an opportunity to celebrate our wonderful natural environment and make connections with our local special places. There are lots of fantastic events around Wellington so please go to www.doc.govt.nz to take part in some of the activities with your family. The overarching theme this year is
 Healthy Nature Healthy People.
As an enviroschool, we are continually wanting to reduce, reuse and recycle. One of our current foci is our nude food lunch boxes so please support this by putting your child’s morning tea and lunches into re-usuable lunchboxes and lunchwraps rather than gladwrap and other packaging.

Another Conservation idea, your child and family can do is take part in the Great Kereru Count. The Kererū also known as the New Zealand Pigeon, kūkū or kūkupa is one of New Zealand’s most valuable assets. They are essential in the regeneration of our native forests because they are the only birds left that can swallow and disperse the seeds from our largest native trees such as tawa, taraire, pūriri and matai. This count is a great opportunity for everyone to get out and about and count the kererū every day over the ten days from September 16th to 25th and report any sightings to the website greatkererucount.nz.

It is also Spring cleaning time so as a family you can sort out your garden sheds and collect your hazardous waste and take it all to the HazMobile at the Riverbank Carpark on Sunday October 30th and you can also take part in the Great DDT Muster. DDT and other pesticides containing persistent organic pollutants (POPS) haven’t been sold or used in New Zealand for many years, due to long-term impacts on health and the environment so if you have any items go to thegreatddtmuster.co.nz/ to arrange for free collection.

Tai van der Bar and Dan Walker have been doing a superb job in leading a team in the Year 7 and 8 garden. They have constructed a planting plan and are continuing to develop the layout of the garden incorporating flowers, herbs and vegetables including companion planting.

Parent and teacher conferences for students in rooms 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 will be held on September 19th and 20th only so please go online and make an appointment time as soon as possible.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the performances as you come along and see your child shine.

WINTER FUN!
Winter has hit us hard this week and the children have been having fun outside in the hail - even our seniors across the road!  It was fun watching the children running outside yesterday catching the hail as it fell.  Mr Woodhams caught the seniors on a short video which you can view on You Tube - Hail vs Students

CYBER SAFETY
The Senior School was very fortunate to be visited by Andrew Tokeley and Bruce Cook recently.  Andrew currently works for 8i and has a wide range of expertise in overseeing projects with online companies whilst Bruce is a Police Officer.
They were kind enough to take the time to share some of their experiences of online etiquette and to understand cyber safety including:
·         The importance of respect both off-line and on-line
·         Accepting differences in people – just like at school everyone is different, that’s the same when you grow up – differences are good!
·         Being aware of the impact you can have on-line, good and bad
·         How people change then they’re on-line.
Student enjoyed some cool augmented reality with ZOMBIES! Care of Andrew and Bruce showed off some of the gadgets he uses as a Police Officer.
Thanks to both Andrew and Bruce for giving up their time to talk to our students!
