Tena koutou katoa, warm greetings and welcome back to Term three!
We have an action packed term full to the brim with learning opportunities and challenges, and look forward to celebrating our progress with you all.
We hope you managed to catch our national television debut that screened on Sunday morning on What Now - if you did not yet manage to see the Muritai school ‘Takeover’, we hope to bring you the link on our website and school Facebook page in the coming weeks.
Last month our Education Minister Nikki Kaye announced the launch of the new Digital Technologies Curriculum - Hangarau Matahiko, which mandates all students from years 1-10 taking part in digital technologies education in the key areas of computational thinking and designing and developing digital outcomes. The background to the changes are as quoted by the Ministry of Education’s web link “New Zealand is a digital nation. Digital technologies are transforming how we live – shaping our homes and our workplaces, and changing the way that we interact with each other and live our everyday lives. Our education system needs to change how we prepare our children and young people to participate, create and thrive in this fast-evolving digital world.”
The increasingly popular practice of coding is now widely considered to be a new type of literacy itself. As a community here in Eastbourne and of course across New Zealand, are becoming more online and digital, the language of computers and devices is becoming another language in our world. Of course not every occupation in the future will involve computer programming, but it is quite likely that all will involve computational thinking. Computational thinking is the tool of problem solvers. It combines creativity, mathematics, logic and algorithms, and teaches new ways of thinking about the world. Computational thinking tackles large problems by breaking them down into a sequence of smaller, more manageable problems. It involves creating models of the real world and tackling real life problems in diverse fields.
Over the next two terms our staff and some of our Board of Trustees will attend further professional development and consultation around the new curriculum, and as a school will begin to plan our way forward. You can have a say in how the final national curriculum document appears by taking part in the face to face workshops or the online consultation tool found here: https://education.govt.nz/ministry-of-education/consultations-and-reviews/digital-technology-consultation/
When more information becomes available, we will certainly keep you up to date.
Art Exhibition - one event to make sure is in your diary is the Muritai Art Exhibition which will be held in Week 9 this term. We will be celebrating the artistic talents of our students by hosting their art in the school hall. It will run over three days and nights from Tuesday the 19th - Thursday the 21st September. Keep your eyes peeled for more information in coming weeks!

ARTSPLASH
Our Artsplash Choir will be performing on Wednesday 20 September at the Michael Fowler Centre. A letter with a permission slip went home with every child who is participating in this yesterday. Can you please return the permission slips to the office ASAP. Tickets are on sale from the office for $5.00. Each family can purchase up to 4 tickets. Each child who is participating MUST wear a Muritai School T-shirt. If your child does not have a t-shirt they are available to purchase at the office. We may need to order some more in so we would appreciate if you could come and see us before Friday 11 August.
The Year 3/4 children are taking part in Chapter Chat over the next 5 weeks. It is a nationwide novel study where we read the book 'The Sasquatch Escape', complete comprehension activities and share learning with other classes across New Zealand. We are loving the story and the follow up activities. We can't wait to connect with other classes and discuss our learning!
LUCKY BOOK CLUB
The new Scholastic catalogue is now available. We would like to let you know about a change that Scholastic have made to their ordering system.
Many of you are already making orders online through LOOP and this is now the only way you can order if you wish to pay by credit card. LOOP is easy to use and all of the details for ordering on LOOP are included on the student order form inside the Lucky Book Club catalogue.
The student order form only needs to be filled in and returned to the school office if you are paying by cheque. Cheques need to be made out to Scholastic NZ. Even though the order form offers a cash payment, due to orders being made directly to Scholastic we are unable to accept cash payments.
The close off date for all orders, handed into the school office or made online through the LOOP system is Friday the 18th of August.
Thank you for your continued support of Lucky Book Club, which assists us in purchasing new Library books for everyone to enjoy.

COMMUNITY NOTICES
Once again Eastbourne’s Party of the Year will be taking place at the Muritai School Hall on Saturday 19 August from 7pm till midnight. Tickets are $80.00 which include a bubbles on arrival, + 2 free drinks, canapes, dinner, by Blue Carrott Catering, and sweets and a great band! This year we are fundraising to upgrade the outdoor space at the Eastbourne Sports and Services Club. Tickets are available to purchase at the Office or by contacting Jo 021 025 19479. RAISING HAPPY, CONFIDENT AND RESILIENT CHILDREN
Sacred Heart Cathedral School has teamed up with Jenny Hale from The Parenting Place to present Raising Happy, Confident and Resilient Children.
We would love to invite your school community join us for this seminar on Tuesday 1 August at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm), at 40 Hill St, Thorndon.

POSSUM CONTROL WORK IN ORONGORONGO AREA
Central Districts Pest Control Ltd will be carrying out possum control work on the Orongorongo contract from late July 2017 to the end of June 2018. The project runs directly south of Wainuiomata, east of Coast Road and down to Plumbago Stream in the south. We tendered for and won the contract from TBfree New Zealand.
Central Districts Pest Control are required to inform the community of their operation as they will be making limited use of the schedule 1 poison - Feratox (encapsulated cyanide). Any Feratox used will be up trees, out of reach of stock, in bait stations. Methods are aimed at being relatively safe & low-impact.

KULA KIDS YOGA TERM 3 - ENROLLING NOW!
Kula Kids' Yoga classes are playful and creative. Our experienced teacher, Jeanne, weaves story, song and games into the ancient art of yoga.
In this eight-week course, your young yogis will build strength of body & mind, balance, and flexibility guided by the yoga principles of kindness, honesty, commitment, and contentment.

Middle Years Toolbox parenting group – from The Parenting Place
A fun and inspiring small group parenting course for parents of children aged 6-12 years.
It’s designed to help you stay connected, teach skills and build memories.
In term 3 there are two Middle Years groups to choose from:
Newlands: Tuesdays 7pm to 9:30pm from 25 July to 5 September (no session 15 Aug)
Island Bay: Mondays 7:30pm to 9:30pm from 21 August to 25 September
Bookings are essential. Cost: $75 individual, $110couple (subsidies are available – please ask!)
Free for foster and adoptive parents and grandparents raising grandchildren, thanks to govt funding.
