FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Tena koutou katoa, warm greetings to you all

Term two is underway and the learning adventures are looking exciting around the school as classes begin exploring this terms unit ‘Eureka!’.

Road Patrol and Crossing use
Please be mindful of the crossings outside Muriti School and in Eastbourne village.  We educate the students to use these crossings, and have students and parents who volunteer their own time to monitor the safe entry and exit to school as ‘road patrollers’ each day.  These messages lose there impact when we see parents and students darting through traffic just along the road, near the crossing.  Please consider the messages you send to all of our children if you dart across the road.  We want them all to arrive to school and get home safely - just as you do.

Bullying Free Week - Kia Kaha
Next week is the nationwide Bullying Free Week.  Like last year, we are promoting Bullying Free Week with a Pink Shirt Day next Friday (18th May) where students are invited to dress up wearing pink.  In New Zealand, Pink Shirt Day aims to create schools, workplaces and communities where all people feel safe, valued and respected.

We know that most bullying takes place away from adults, and that children and young people often find it difficult to talk to adults about bullying and report it. This year’s Bullying-Free NZ Week theme, Let’s Talk About It!, aims to encourage conversations between children and young people and the adults around them, and to get the whole community talking about the issue.

Next week also marks the beginning of our new school wide initiative called Kia Kaha.  This series of lessons around Kia Kaha consists of a comprehensive range of anti-bullying resources to help children and young people learn and apply a range of safe practices that they can use to build and maintain successful relationships throughout their lives.
The New Zealand Police recommends that learning activities in Kia Kaha operate within a whole-school approach as described on the Bullying-Free NZ website. In the whole-school approach, parents and whānau contribute to and support the programme.

To understand this new programme further, we are running an introductory parent session next Tuesday evening at two different times -  the first is from 3:30 - 4:30, and second is from 6-7pm in our school library.  The sessions will be the same, please attend the session that is the best time for you.  At these meetings, Constable Mark (Blue) McCaffrey will run through the Kia Kaha programme.

As part of this ongoing initiative we will be gathering student, staff and parent voice around Bullying and student wellbeing.

Gathering data, especially from students, is important to determine the level and type of bullying that occurs, whether existing efforts are working, and get a full picture of what’s going on, rather than relying on how things appear on the surface. Data can be used to suggest particular areas of focus to prevent harm, and to provide a baseline for monitoring outcomes over time. NZ Police recommend the Wellbeing@School student surveys as a useful tool to gather and analyse school data about bullying. We begin these surveys with our students from years 5-8 over the next week.

Written Reports Mid Year
With the removal of National Standards, schools are adapting their written reports.  We value your input and want to collect this parent voice in a brief survey.  Keep an eye out in your inbox for a survey on written reports at Muritai.

FROM THE SCHOOL

CROSS COUNTRY
Children are currently practicing for the School Cross Country competition which will be held on Thursday 24 May starting at HW Shortt.  Please send your child to school with sensible running shoes over the next couple of weeks.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Lucky Book Club
Issue 3 out now. Please make your orders online at https://mybookclub.scholastic.co.nz/Parent/Login.aspx or fill in the form in the catalogue and return with payment (cheques made out to Scholastic NZ) to the office by Friday 25th of May.

HEAD LICE
Unfortunately it appears that several children have head lice in the school.  Anyone can get head lice. They are a common problem and cause concern and frustration for parents and children. Catching head lice has nothing to do with poor hygiene.  People get head lice from head to head contact with someone who already has head lice which can easily happen when children play or sleep together and their heads touch.   Please check your children regularly and if you would like further information, you can ask at the office for a Regional Public Health pamphlet.

EASTBOURNE SOCCER
A 7th grade Eastbourne soccer team competed in a soccer tournament at Days Bay on Sunday 7th May 2018.  The seven children all attend Muritai school. A excellent performance by all the team saw them take out the 7th grade trophy for the first time in Tournament history.  With three wins from three in pool play they took on Karori in a tense Semi final, with time almost up on the clock a thunder bolt shot from Jac HAYES secured a brilliant win.

The final was against Petone Settlers which also went down to the final whistle, with 2 minutes to play and the score locked up at 2-2 Seb BODDEN produced a shot which ricocheted of the bar allowing Jac to hammer home another thunderbolt.

A brilliant display on defence all day by Sam CATHIE and Noah DELANY shut down any attacking threat. The mid field was dominated by Charlie HELFORD, Hannah PARK and Alfie CLENCH their skill and determination was magnificent. This allowed the attacking threat of Jac HAYES and Seb BODDEN to score the goals for victory in all five games.

A brilliant result and the school has a rich group of talent going forward.
