MONDAY 18 JUNE 2018

Kia Ora, Talofa Lava, Greetings, Malo e Lelei, Kia Orana, Bonjour, Nǐ hǎo, Hallo, Hola, Kon'nichiwa,
Namaste, G’day mate

A warm welcome to Arthur Beck and Scarlett Smithers to room 2 this week.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

We have been pleased to welcome the sun back to Eastbourne ever so briefly over the past few days!
We have wet day monitors that visit classes and help to guide and entertain children during these
ongoing  wet lunches, and they have suggested some games and puzzles would be useful. If you have
any board games or puzzles (with all pieces still intact) that your own children have grown out of,
please drop them to your classroom teacher or to the front office and we will find a happy class
recipient for these.

After Drop off Walk and Talk
The weather conditions have not been favourable  for our regular ‘Walk and Talks’ of late! Our next
scheduled Walk n Talk is scheduled for Tuesday 19th June at 9am.  If it is raining we will head to Hive
and meet upstairs for the ‘Talk’ segment only. I hope to see you there.

NZEI
Next week on Friday the 29th of June, the teachers from this school will be attending a NZEI Te Riu
Roa paid union meeting regarding the Kua Tae Te Wā - It’s Time campaign. The campaign aims to
free teachers to teach and principals to lead, by getting the additional support and staff that schools
need. The meetings will allow our teachers to discuss how the Ministry of Education has responded
to changes that the union is seeking.

Our teaching staff who are members of NZEI are legally entitled to attend this meeting. The teachers
will be leaving school in their lunch hour to attend their paid union meeting which starts at 2pm. Our
teachers will leave just prior to  1:30pm as our closest meeting is in Taita at the Walter Nash Stadium.
To reduce disruption for you, the school will remain open with a smaller staff including relievers.

You are invited to make arrangements to pick your child(ren) up from school at lunchtime on Friday
the 29th June if you would prefer.   Make sure if you are going to pick your children up that you check
out through our office. Remember if you are unable to pick your children up,  your children will be
looked after till the usual time of 2:55pm.

I appreciate that this creates some inconvenience for families. However, I encourage you to support
your teachers as they strive to achieve the changes which will safeguard quality education for all children
and ensure we make teaching an attractive profession for graduates.

Eastbourne Library Events
Our local Eastbourne library always has something wonderful going on!   Currently they are focussed on
tabletop games. If you are 10 and above you can head along on the first Thursday of each month at
3:45pm to challenge your friends and whanau. Some of our students went along to the last event and
gave high praise indeed! Some of their new games include Pandemic, Fluxx, Incan Gold and More! The
next game afternoon is on the 5th July.

Someone also let on to the Library that I was a huge Harry Potter fan, so they were sure to let me know
they were having a big display to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the
Philosopher’s Stone.  This is taking place during the last week of term. On Friday July 6th there will be
a green screen and a number of Harry Potter themed props. Children (and adults) will be able to have
photos taken of themselves in a Harry Potter theme.  The screen will be up at 3.00 till closing time 5.30
on the 6th July.

Winter Sickness and Bugs
Unfortunately we are in the midst of the winter ills and chills.  Sometimes parents ask us how long to
keep their child away from school, so we’ve included this link so you can see what the Ministry of Health
recommend.  When in doubt - we recommend you keep unwell children at home to avoid the spread
of infectious illnesses.

School Hours - What time does the bell go?
School commences at 8.50 am and concludes at 2.55 pm. Morning interval 10.30 - 10.50 am Lunch
12.30 - 1.25 pm. The first school bell is at 8:40 which signals to children that school will begin shortly
and to head to class. School begins at 8:50.

The 8:40 bell is to ensure a settled start to the day, we hope to have all learners settled and in class
when the 8:50 bell rings.  If your child arrives after the 8:50 bell, please report to the office so that
we mark them present on the roll.

Thank you!
