FROM THE PRINCIPAL

What an amazing couple of weeks we have had at Muritai School! If you follow our Facebook Page you’ll know our students have been involved in all sorts of amazing learning opportunities over the past fortnight.

This week I’ve been lucky enough to judge the year 5 and 6 speech competition along with esteemed judges Sue Fieldes and Emily Keddell,  where we awarded the R D Harrison trophy to the winning speech maker for 2018  - Oliver Jensen-Marshall.  Congratulations to all speakers from the Kereru finals and to those who took part in the class speech making programme.  We have a talented group of speech makers at Muritai School!

On Tuesday our superstar band members from Apollo 7 rocked the house at the Bandquest.  We were delighted to have our first band in the competition since 2012, which has been an aim of Mrs Hooke’s this year! Well done to all band members - and a special mention to Ruby who won an individual award on the night for her impressive bass playing.  A HUGE thank you to Charles and Ruth who lead our school band.

We have had so many visitors over the past weeks to our classes - including many community experts guiding our learning around sustainability in our inquiry for this term Te Ora i Te Huringa - Living the Change. We’ve had experts in everything from rat trapping to lizard houses and more! An enormous thank you for those that donate their time for our learners.

Our Board of Trustees were hosted by our Head students on Wednesday where they enjoyed a tour of the school and afternoon tea with our Heads and Deputies.  Our Head students did us proud where they sat and had a mature conversation about Muritai and their learning, and their future thinking for Muritai School, and thanked the Board for their work in helping us have a great school  - where we can all be the Best we can Be.

Please note the following for next Friday:

APOLLO 7 - MURITAI BAND
Apollo 7, Muritai’s rock band, took part in Bandquest on Tuesday night at the Little Theatre in Lower Hutt and what a wonderful night it was!
Sixteen bands competed in this event from schools throughout the greater Wellington region and the standard was unbelievably high.
Apollo 7 is made up of Kieran Kerr (drums), Theo Thompson (guitar), Fraser Neilson (keyboard), Ruby Barton-Vivien (bass) and Clara Archibald, Mila-Rose Daniel-Oakshatt and Emma Miller on vocals. They performed two songs – ‘Africa’ by Toto and ‘Come Together’ by the Beatles. Our guys truly rocked it and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Ruby won the award for best bass player – congratulations Ruby!
This band is coached by our guitar teacher Charles Hazlewood and Ruth Hooke.

Nuts
We have an increasing number of students attending our school who are severely allergic to nuts.  We are an inclusive school and want to provide all students with a safe school environment.

To support us with this, please could you consider the items that your child has in their lunchboxes for morning tea and lunch.

We ask that you do not send any peanut, cashew, brazil or obvious nut products e.g. peanut butter with your child.  If your child has eaten these before coming to school, please ensure that their face and hands have been thoroughly washed before they arrive at school.

These precautionary measures will help us ensure that the students with these allergies have less of a chance of exposure to nuts thus avoiding a life threatening reaction and meaning all of our students are able to be safe.

Artsplash
Muritai choir will be performing at Artsplash on 17 September at 7.30pm at the Michael Fowler Centre.  They are sounding fantastic.  Please get your tickets ($5 each) from the school office.

SPORT
Years 3 and 4 Muritai Meerkats
The start of the second round saw a tough opening match with Muritai working with new combinations to secure a hard fought  battle. Confidence on a high and committed training has led to three more storming wins and the Meerkats remaining undefeated for the season.

Our last match showed great sportsmanship by the Meerkats. With the opposition only having 3 payers The Meerkats stepped up and helped out, swapping around, often playing in different positions to ensure everyone got on court. You girls took it as a great  opportunity to play with some new players.

Kei runga noa atu koutou !!!

Huge thank you to Year 7 and 8 s Marshmallows. Your  support on the sideline really spurs us on !
