FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Tena koutou Muritai families,

COVID-19 - What’s happening at Muritai School for prevention?

There have been some concerns raised about what we can do at school to avoid the COVID-19 virus being contracted by students. Please read the following for an update on what we are doing at Muritai School, as at the 6th of March.  I continue to receive daily updates from the Ministries of Education and Health around COVID -19.  I want to reassure you that I will continue to bring updates of the latest information I receive.

What are the current recommendations to avoid COVID-19? It continues to remain that the best thing to do is to practice good preventative measures, particularly good hygiene:

  • Washing hands with soap and water for 20 seconds before and after eating as well as after attending the toilet
  • Covering coughs and sneezes with clean tissues or with an elbow
  • Putting all used tissues in the bin
  • Encouraging students to stay home if they are unwell
If you can assist us with the messaging around the hand washing, we will reinforce the messaging at school too.  We provide hand sanitiser and tissues in all classrooms and soap, warm water, paper towels/hand dryers in all bathrooms.  The current recommendation is for 20 second hand washing - here is a short video as an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGJNspLRdrc
We have agreed with our cleaning company to add to their cleaning system an additional weekly clean with an antiviral, non toxic, hydrogen peroxide cleaner HyperClean®  on all hard surfaces - this has an active residue time for 28 days and is very effective at killing bacteria, viruses and pathogens.
We do have students and staff at Muritai School who have respiratory and other medical needs, and they may have further complications if they happen to pick up the virus.  We ask for your support in keeping children at home if they are unwell.

For current, further information please check out the Ministry of Education link: https://education.govt.nz/novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-3/

New Board Members
Congratulations to Lisa South who has been appointed as the new Board of Trustees’ parent representative and to Felicity Lovell appointed as our staff trustee.  Both Lisa and Felicity will take office at the next Board meeting on Tuesday 24 March.  We wish to thank Eric Janssen who also put his name forward in what was a closely run election.

Learning Partnership Meetings - (Final Week for feedback):

Thank you for the fabulous attendance rates at our recent learning partnership meetings.

If you were not able to attend either of the two afternoons, please contact your teacher directly to set up a meeting or perhaps a chat over the phone.  The learning partnership meetings are an important start to the home and school partnership that we grow over each year, and a chance for you to connect and develop a relationship with your child’s teacher.

We value your thinking and opinions on how the learning partnerships ran this year - please click on the link to provide any feedback. https://forms.gle/GU9yGTFR8PhkXWDe6

Children still need to be wearing hats during morning tea and lunchtimes, even though the days are getting cooler.  Please ensure they bring a wide brimmed hat to school and name them so that we can return them if they lose them during the day. Only Kāhu children in year 7 and 8 are able to wear caps to school.
