FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Tena koutou Muritai families,

Welcome back to Term 4 at Muriati School!

Teacher Only Day - tomorrow

A reminder that our final Teacher Only Day this year is tomorrow -  Friday the 22nd of October.  We have timed this to neatly add onto Labour Weekend for our school families. We thank you all for supporting our Muritai team with this Teacher Only Day.

Wig Wednesday - Let’s have some fun!

Wig Wednesday is an annual fundraising event held across New Zealand to support the Child Cancer Foundation. Next Wednesday, October 27th, your child from Kororā, Tūī and Kererū teams are able to take part in a ‘Wacky Hair’ or ‘Wear a Wig’ to school day. Please send along a gold coin for this to your child’s teacher. The Charity Ambassadors from Year 7 and 8 will collect the donations for this cause.

Please note that the Kāhu team (Year 7 and 8) will be having their Wacky Hair Day on Thursday October 28th instead.

Production - the show will go on!

After considerable thought & consideration we have decided to move the live production performances on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Week 4 Term 4 to the filmed production - the Muritai Movie! This news is not what we wanted to share, as we were all looking forward to sharing this performance with you! I have been so impressed with the teachers' hard work and the students' amazing efforts that all have put into preparation for these evening performances…but the show will go on! We will film the production in week 4 and allow the children to still perform their production item. We will then turn the filmed items into a Production movie and make this available to whānau and children later this term.

I know this may come as a disappointment, however this last year has taught us to be resilient and innovative in our approaches to what and how we do things at school and as a school community. We will continue to bring you updates on how the movie is shaping up, and our plans on how to view the production this year.

We are also looking to see if there are people in our community with professional videography skills and equipment who would consider donating their time to create this movie.

If this sounds like you or someone you know, please get in touch, we hope to hear from you over the next week.

Thank you all for your understanding and continued support around our production.  The dancing assistance, prop / costume making and purchasing and providing will all add into the wonderful community feel of our 2021 Muritai Movie!

Alistair Blair Trust:

We are so fortunate at Muritai School to be the holders of the Alistair Blair Trust.  Alistair was a past pupil of Muritai School who sadly passed away in a tragic accident after completing his schooling at Muritai School.  His family keeps his memory alive annually by supporting the children and families of Muritai school who may be facing financial hardship.  If you or someone you know is unable to take part in a school opportunity due to financial constraints, you may like to be considered as a recipient.  Please direct all queries to myself by emailing me at Principal@Muritai.school.nz

We as a school community once again thank the Blair family for their ongoing generosity to the children of Muritai School.

I look forward to seeing you all next week, have a wonderful long weekend.

Kia pai tō mutunga wiki - Have a good weekend

Bec Power, Principal

FROM THE SCHOOL

‘Share the Shake Out’ Tiritiria te Whakahaumaru

On Thursday October 28th at 9.30 a.m. we will be having our annual Earthquake drill and Tsunami Hikoi practice which will involve everyone in the whole school. This practice is to make sure that everyone knows what to do in the event of an earthquake occurring during school hours and if there is a tsunami occurring following an earthquake.

Students will be practicing  ‘Drop, Cover, Hold’ first as if there was an earthquake and will then leave school and walk up McKenzie Road for the Tsunami practice. If we are in Alert Level 2 we will only be doing the earthquake drill at school.

Athletics

Next week we are having our annual athletics sports days for Years 3 to 8. Due to Alert Level 2, they are all being held on our school field and spread across different days and times. The Kāhu team (Year 7 and 8) will be holding their events on Thursday October 28th. The Tūī team (Year 3 and 4) will be participating in long jump and high jump following this on the same day. The Kererū team (Year 5 and 6) will have theirs on Friday October 29th, with the Tūī team completing the rest of their activities after that.  Sprints will be on Monday November 1st throughout the day.  Unfortunately at level 2 we cannot have parents on site during the day to watch children participating in the athletics.

Inter School - Inter Zone Athletics Update:

As the Wellington region is staying at Alert Level two for at least another week, LHPSSA is cancelling all Zone and Interzone events.

This is very disappointing especially after the swimming events got cancelled in term 3 but unfortunately with the current situation LHPSSA need to make sure we stay on the safe side.

The process to select athletes if the Regional Meet goes ahead will be discussed at the zone meetings this week.

Touch Rugby

We have 115 children playing touch this term. The season starts on Thursday 28th for Year 7/8 and Friday 29th for the other year groups. As we are still at Alert Level 2, there will be no spectators allowed at the games. Please arrange car pooling to get the children to the games amongst your team mates.

Please also don't forget to purchase your sports uniform from Jo in the office.
