Kia ora koutou

We welcome to Flynn Houston to Muritai School.

Tomorrow we have shifted our school assembly to 9.45am to accommodate the senior school debating finals in the hall at 11.00. School finishes at the normal time at 2.55pm.

At Muritai we are all looking forward to the holiday break. It has been a wonderful term but as you may know the school has been extremely busy and we have some tired children this week. We are very proud of the quality of the things we have done as a school this term – not just the flash things such as the performance activities, but also our core business around reading, writing, maths and inquiry. Our children are making great progress in their academic studies but most of all we are also particularly pleased with the way they are working with each other – which is the heart of the school.

These last 5 weeks it has been an absolute pleasure to be a part of a really strong team consisting of the kids, our teaching staff and the parent community working with a whole raft of opportunities. A special thanks to Mary-Carmel Rohloff who has been at Muritai on teaching practice for the last 7 weeks in room 24 and been a wonderful addition to the staff in that time.  Thank you all.

TALL TALES
Our school production is over. Well done to the production team who put the show together and the acting team for all their hard work not just learning and playing their lines but also the peripheral work they did with the younger students. Many adults were critical to the success of the show from teachers to support staff to parents who all put many hours in to a wonderful experience for all concerned.

HOME AND SCHOOL
A special thanks for the home and school parent group who organised the drinks and nibbles which helped fill the time between work and the show for many of our paying customers. It was well received.

BASKETBALL

Our school basketball teams have really been doing superbly this year and played in their competitions ‘finals’ winning both matches to secure two trophies.

Our year 4 team won their competition overall, being unbeaten all year and winning their final. Thanks to the supporters and to Hannah and Lincoln Moffat from our senior school who did much of the coaching.

Our year 7 basketball team, coached by Barb McKenzie, also won the Hutt Valley competition. In a very tight exciting game, and after trailing Naenae Intermediate for the entire match they won in extra time 19-18 with a ‘golden basket’ shot from the free throw line. The supporters had a very stressful and exciting time supporting the team to victory. Well done all.

BEE MOVIE
Our Bee Movie, which we recently published on Muritai TV was awarded second place in the 2014 National Beekeepers Association Bee Aware Month Video Competition. The school earns prizes from Ecostore and Palmers and all winning movies will be on the Beeaware website at www.beeaware.org.nz

EASTBOURNE’S SHINING STAR
This month it is Muritai’s turn to have a shining star and we are pleased to support the awarding of the Eastbourne Shining Star trophy to Sage Pettus.  Sage stretches herself beyond her limits, tries extra hard and pushes through her comfort zones to achieve great things in sports and the arts.

Sage recently sat her Grade 1 ABRSM Piano exam (The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) and passed with an outstanding Distinction.  Sage gained 137 marks out of the possible 150. This really is an exceptional result. Her piano teacher Vanessa Tindle says she is an exceptional pianist for her age and is a delight to teach. Sometimes it’s hard to believe she has only just turned 8!  She is always mature in her approach to learning, listens carefully to the advice and guidance given to her and , as a result, makes stunning progress. Sage also recently competed in a Women’s Artistic Gymnastics competition held at Onslow College. There were competitors from 7 different gyms in the Wellington area, with Sage representing the Hutt Valley Gym Team in the "Step 1 Over” age group.  Sage placed 1st overall.

JUMP OFF
Yesterday the junior school had their annual Jump Off Skipping event. The children were amazingly skilled at skipping, and for those that have tried skipping lately I was amazed at how fit the children were – they seemed to be able to skip for ages!  Room 4 have posted photos and writing about the event and you can access it here.

HOOKED ON BOOKS
Thank you so much to the many, many adults who have been part of our hooked on Books programme in terms 2 and 3. So many of our junior children have thoroughly enjoyed their 1:1 sessions reading, writing and spelling with their designated ‘adult’. This programme is very beneficial to give the children a boost (or an extension) and we are very grateful to our volunteers.

SALLY AND ORLA
Congratulations to Sally and Orla who won the Keep Hutt City Beautiful bag design competition. Their designs have been printed onto reusable bags and are now for sale in local stores (the Eastbourne 4 Square). This reduces the need to use plastic bags. The girls won from 560 entries with Sally winning the 13-18 category and Orla winning the 12 and under section. Their prize was a beautiful retro bike each built by BikeTec.

Leigh Sutton, Keep Hutt City Beautiful Chairman was on the judging panel and said “The winning entries had a ‘human element’ and immediate recognition of Hutt City.  They were creative, striking, eye catching and clever.  The more you looked, the more you saw. With such high calibre entries it was a difficult decision.”
