Naumai e te whanau o te kura Muritai
Tena koutou katoa,

Welcome to Noah Carian to Muritai School.

As we close in on the end of the term the school is in very good heart. Our annual sojourn into the performing arts finds us in the middle of a huge fortnight. Artsplash singing and visual art, and Dancesplash were last week and this week we have the School Production 'Tall Tales' on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Under the guidance of Raihania Chadwick it has been a really co-operative school community effort between kids, teachers and parents and we thank you all for helping us make this show happen.

Teachers have done their best to keep communicating with you over the last week or so, making you aware of details for the children for the next few days. A couple of key things...

  • Please make sure your children are dropped off in time to get ready for the show.
  • Please make sure you collect your children timely after they have performed.
  • If you are watching the show then please watch the whole show. Do not leave the show early to collect your children once they have performed.
School productions are a huge effort to put together but they are something the children remember for a long time so the effort is well worth it. With the increased emphasis on reading, writing and maths scores it is important to keep a wide curriculum in operation so all children can shine in a number of different opportunities.

STAFFING
Next week we farewell Jess Savage who goes on maternity leave from room 11 until 2016. Janelle McKay will be joining the teaching team in room 11 until the end of the year and Hayley Skilton takes over from Jess as Associate Principal for year 3-4. We wish Jess and Julian all the very best in their next life-changing journey.

ARTSPLASH

Wow! What a huge week we had with so many students involved in Artsplash.  Muritai was well and truly represented with 123 children singing in the massed choir, 12 students modelling for the Wearable Art, 68 students in Artsplash Dance and artworks from children across all year groups exhibited in the Art exhibition in the Renouf Foyer.

The choir concert was outstanding. We had students from Year 3-6 and they sang their wee hearts out ! They had sixteen songs to learn and they had all worked extremely hard to master this. Many students auditioned for the soloist / small group part and Olivia Morphew, Emma Littlefair, Pania Rolfe, Auriel Lewis, Ned Sykes and Emma Miller were successful in this.

In the Artsplash Choir concerts there is a Wearable Art section where students model their creations on stage. We had a group of students enter into this section and they looked truly stunning on stage with all the special lighting and effects from the lighting team at the Michael Fowler Centre. They also modelled and posed in the foyer as people mixed and mingled before the shows began. Our Wearable Art students were  Noah Daniel-Oakshatt, Auriel Lewis, Emma Littlefair, Mary Heath, Mila Van Der Wilt,  Shannon Humphris, Olivia Palmer-Smith, Eva Oliver, Shannyn Thompson, Rachel Vass, Ruby Wells and Milly Sherriff.

The Muritai Kapa Haka group joined forces with a group of Year 7 and 8 dancers to create an outstanding performance blending the two genres. They performed as the finale in the Friday night Dance show and were the perfect ending for the Artsplash Festival. They looked amazing in their costumes and when they ended with the Muritai Haka they were so strong and powerful. It made me have a wee lump in my throat – it was truly moving!

You can check out their performance on http://youtu.be/N5sH31egIOc

Huge congratulations to all our performers, you did us proud!

TOURNAMENT OF THE MINDS
Congratulations to our Y7-8 team who competed on Saturday 6 September at Hutt Intermediate winning an honours award for the spontaneous challenge which involved solving a tricky problem with 3 minutes to prepare. Congratulations to Charlotte, Lexi, George, Noah, Hannah, Mia and Kieran.

CALENDARS
Calendar orders are due in this Friday, 19 September.  These make excellent Christmas presents for grandparents, family and friends.  Calendars are $12 with Diaries and packs of cards at $16.  Please bring your orders to the school office.

SPORTS
Hockey
On Tuesday 2 September members of the year 5/6 syndicate took part in the Central Zones Hockey Tournament at Fraser Park.  The boy's squad played exceptionally well winning 5 out of their 6 games, scoring an average of 4 goals per game and finishing second in their grade.

The girl's squad also played remarkably well, their structured game play and skill set allowed them to out-play their opponents to finish first in their grade.

The combined efforts of both teams meant that Muritai School finished first overall retaining the Central Zone Cup for the third year in a row.  Thank you to all the parents that supported the students on the day.

Football
UNICEF NZ and Capital Football invited students to attend a Fair Play event at Memorial Park, Petone on Tuesday 9 September which was also supported by the Wellington Phoenix.

This event was an opportunity for a group of students (Lea Pummer, Evie Wilson, Roan O'Sullivan and Josh Apaapa-Preston) to meet professional sports players and learn from their experiences.  Wellington Phoenix Players shared their experiences of sport in a Q&A session followed by a football skills and games session lead by Capital Football.

Girl’s Football Festival
Last week to celebrate Girl’s and Woman’s Week a large group of year 3-8 girls attended the Girl’s Football Festival.

The festival was held at the ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie and the 6 teams from our School had the opportunity to play against other schools throughout the Wellington region.

The girls also got to meet and play alongside a number of Football Ferns such as Lucy Stotter who attended Muritai School. The girls had a fantastic time, many thanks to the parents that helped out on the day with transport and supervision.

THE SCHOOLGEN LEAD TEAM
At the beginning of this term students in the year 5/6 syndicate formed a new group called the Schoolgen Lead Team. The group was set up to promote awareness about energy efficiency and to educate Muritai School about solar energy.

There are a number of groups in the lead team that are responsible for looking after different aspects and goals for the team. There is the BEV group that work on articles for the Birds Eye View and the Energy Efficiency Sign group responsible for making signs that encourage everyone at Muritai School to turn off electronic equipment and lights that are not being used.

In 2009 Muritai School had 12 solar panels installed on room 23. Since the day they were installed they have produced 10,496kwh of electricity, which is enough energy to power 4,859 personal computers running for 1 day. Over the last 12 months our solar panels have generated 1,966kwh and saved 388kg of CO2. At the end of the year the lead team is planning on having a big celebration to celebrate 5 years since the installation of the solar panels 5, something we still haven’t celebrated yet! Stay tuned.

AC MILAN JUNIOR CAMPS
Just wanted to notify you about an incredible opportunity for football enthusiast kids that we are bringing to New Zealand - AC Milan Junior Camps, to be held in Wellington in July 2015!  We have just set up our website and are now taking expressions of interest from those wishing to attend the week long camps.

The camps are aimed at all skill levels, but there is a “scouting” element within the ACM Junior Camp environment. They are always looking to identify future talent and have mentioned that they see great potential in NZ given we excel in all sectors relative to our population base.

If your child is interested in attending, please register on the website asap, as they are launching into a nation-wide marketing campaign, and initial indications are that the limited placements will be exhausted very quickly.  If you have any queries, or require any additional information, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
