FRIDAY 12 JULY

Kia ora koutou,

The morning we sent out a Board of Trustees newsletter. You can access it by clicking here

Next week is week 9 and I am enjoying reading through the children’s mid year reports which come home on the Friday of week 10. The reports show good progress for the children and informs you of their strengths and weaknesses. There is of course a focus on reading, writing and maths in the report and while we do provide a wide curriculum at Muritai, the formative years of schooling mean that we track and report these areas the closest. It is interesting following the children through school over time and when I look at our year 7-8 (11-13 years old) students today I do often reflect and remember  them when they were our youngest children in Mrs Ryan’s, Mrs Buckley’s and Mrs Sullivan’s class. They are so independent and strong, self-managing and grown up and this reflects the gradual growth over time to become their own person. Everyday they grew a little bit at school and now they are our school leaders with such a wide skillset that no report template can reflect on what they have to offer our school and community. Many of you took the opportunity to see these children sharing their ‘Personal Passion Projects’ last Friday and were able to see how it all comes together towards the end of primary school.

A reminder about putting a date in your diaries for Wednesday 1st July for the Learning Celebrations from 3pm - 6pm. The children will share their portfolio of work for the first five months of the year and support the written report. It is a good record of growth and we allow the children to talk through their progress with their parent as they share what and how they learn at school.

While we don’t have formal teacher interviews at this time, a reminder that staff are always available to meet with you to provide any updates on how your child is progressing at school. Just contact them via email and negotiate a meeting time that best suits both parties.

POLYFEST
The Polyfest Performance is on Thursday June 25th at which our Kapa Haka roopu will be performing.  Mrs Algar and Mrs Hooke and the roopu have been working so hard to put together their performance and they are looking very sharp indeed.
Tickets are available from the office for $5 each and there are initially only 2 available per family to ensure all families see their children perform.  Extra tickets may become available closer to the time.

YEAR 7-8 ON TV TRIP
On Wednesday our technocraft group went to Capital E, to On TV. We had to act out a small play/news focused on the Wahine disaster. At school, before we did anything we had to learn about the Wahine disaster and some of us had to write our own scripts. The Wahine disaster happened on April 10, 1968.  Fifty one people lost their lives that day after it hit Barrett reef and capsized. Mostly everyone had deep cuts, gashes and hypothermia was one of the major problems.

On Wednesday we all met at Days Bay wharf to catch the ferry across to Wellington, from there we had to walk to the Capital E centre and to meet Kit who would help us with the props and filming. We went upstairs to get started. When we got there we were amazed at how professional the studio looked. After we settled down and Kit had talked us through what was going to happen that day, he showed us the costume room and we all got dressed into what our characters might have worn.

We had one hour to practise our lines and acting - that time went really fast!

When we knew our lines well enough and the time was up we finally started filming. We had two practices of real filming to get the hang of everything, but after that we had to start with the real stuff. It was really nerve wracking to know that we were on camera and to think we might forget our lines and ruin the filming. Finally after another mucked up show we had one last go left. With only one mishap in the middle we filmed the perfect show!

After we watched our finished product, we went to the Food Court and we all went off to find food. Slowly the table started filling up and we all talked and laughed together.

Before we went back to the ferry, we had a quick trip to the City and Sea Museum and then we slowly walked to the ferry and nearly missing it.

This is our finished product.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS
Entertainment Books should have either been returned to the office or purchased.  If you would like to purchase a book or need to return one, please do so as soon as possible. A big thank you to everyone who has purchased a book to date.

ROAD PATROL
We need some parents to help us with road patrol in the morning and afternoon. Some of our regular volunteers have changing circumstances. Rather than adding a 4th ‘duty’ onto our teaching staff we would hope that there are some parents out there that can help the teachers out by supervising road patrol for 30 minutes once a week. If you can, then please let Jo know at the office.

STEVE WREN
Sadly at the end of this term we say goodbye to our beloved drum and guitar teacher Steve Wren. Steve and his wife Debbie are heading back to the UK. Steve’s last day will be in week 10, Friday 26 July. We at Muritai have loved having Steve as part of our team and we will all miss him. Taking over Steve’s business are Charles Hazlewood (guitar) and Andy Russell (drums). Both Charles and Andy are working specifically in a number of local schools in the Hutt Valley and come highly recommended.
