Naumai e te whanau o te kura Muritai
Kia ora koutou

Welcome to Guy Marshall (R3) and Logan Coby (R4) who have  joined the Muritai family this week.

The Board of Trustees looks forward to hosting interested parents on Monday as we develop our strategic planning to shape the school direction through to 2020. Primary school is many things but stripped right back we play a critical role in developing both skills and attitudes for learning and opportunities to develop skills in working with others and. At the end of the day we feed into the secondary school process and we aim for our children to carry a strong set of learning skills to successfully transition from Muritai into high school.

The content of the school day evolves across the years with innovations, world change and changing priorities keeping the bar shifting. There is always tension between the need to practice our essential skills yet learn new things to build our general knowledge. We know we have to practice things to build our competencies, but we also have to take time to learn new things to understand the world. We also have 8 key learning areas to squeeze in - english, maths, science and technology, social studies, PE, the arts and learning language. Over the 13 years children are at school the needs of society change quickly - 13 years ago our 5 years olds had one computer in each class and a computer lab. Now those students have a more powerful machine in their pocket and have a skill set and a mind set quite different to our school days in the 1970 - 80s. We know that many of the jobs that our 5 years olds will do when they are in their 20s have not been established yet and we also know that the will probably shift careers 3-4 times in their lives. It is a complex landscape to plan for!
The Board, staff and the children have done some thinking looking forward which will start the evening off and then we will have an interactive session where we gather the thoughts and ideas of our school parents and friends.
Please join us at 7.30pm in the library.

ARTPLASH 2015 (from the kids)
On Monday night, 70 excited year 3-6 Muritai children gathered at the Michael Fowler centre to be part of the musical extravaganza that is Artsplash choir. With bright red poppies on our uniforms with our handkerchiefs or flags secretly stashed in our pockets to use for the last number of the night, we filed onto stage and excitedly took our places.
The first set of songs was from Phantom of the Opera, and was expertly accompanied by a student orchestra. Next, Risha, Toby, Petra and Erin were chosen to perform in a small solo group up at the front of the stage. Representatives from all the schools sang a beautiful song called Corner of the Sky. They were very brave! This was followed by a drum and violin group, some dancey songs including Blame it on the Boogie and Quando Quando Quando, then a Crowded House favourite with accompanying ballet dancers (with Rosie), adding a visual treat.
A break in the singing allowed us to see the amazing wearable arts show on stage, including the wonderful creations of Holly, Shannon, Abby and Auriel from Muritai.
We finished the night with a medley of World War One songs that the audience heartily joined in on. For the last number, Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye, we vigorously waved our New Zealand flags and handkerchiefs above our heads and imagined that we were on a ship leaving Wellington Harbour for the war in Gallipoli.
Everyone had a fantastic time, singing their little hearts out (and trying not to turn around to see ourselves on the the big screen!) We received rapturous applause at the end and can't wait to do it all again next year.

ENVIRO-SCHOOLS GREENHOUSE
A  new greenhouse has emerged in the corner of our orchard beside the dental clinic.   This has been part of an enviro initiative where we can learn about growing plants from seed.  This areas of science learning will be supported in various ways through all levels of the school and is a hands on learning opportunity that has real purpose.  Our target plants are swan plants which are needed for our Monarch butterflies as well as attractant plants,  dune seeds which we can then gift back to the Dune restoration project, and seedlings for the soon to be planted Bee garden in the Intermediate.  The final touches of paving the base of the greenhouse  and shelving will take place over the next couple of weeks.  A wind-break is also being erected to protect the saplings while they establish themselves and to help keep balls away.

The layout of the fruit orchard and greenhouse was planned by 2 year 6 boys Leon Medcalf and Myles Futter,  as part of their maths lessons creating  scale drawings to a brief.  Great job boys!

TOWARDS 2020.
The Board of Trustees and the staff have been working on planning ahead to develop some strategic ideas to take Muritai forward to the year 2020. The Board would like to invite parents to a ‘forward thinking session’ on Monday the 7th September from 7.30pm. If you would like to come along and be part of the process we would love to see you there.

Have a look at the excellent five minute talk from Mark Osborne on modern learning practices in the 21st century….CLICK HERE. Mark explains why learning over the last 5-10 years is different to when we as adults experienced school.

MURITAI NETBALL WRAP UP 2015
A huge congratulations to all the students who played netball this season, the school has had a great season with many achievements to be celebrated.

Firstly a very big thank you must go to all the coaches, managers and parents who helped out this season. All have dedicated a huge amount of their time to the sport, including coaching sessions, tournaments, social functions, team organisation, umpiring and braving the cold on the sidelines every week.

Muritai had a total of 9 teams entered into the competition this year, our highest number yet. All the teams have performed extremely well, and achieved many personal goals along the way.
In the competitive primary and intermediate divisions the following teams won the second round of the competition and should be very proud of their achievements:
Muritai 1 Intermediate Section 6
Muritai 3 Primary Section 2
Muritai 4 Primary Section 9

Congratulations to all teams and we look forward to seeing everyone at the Muritai Netball Presentation night at the RSA on the 19th September.

Narelle, Hayley and Mikaela
