Head Students Speech to the School
Today our Head Students presented a co-constructed speech to the school. I was so impressed by their key points, I thought I’d present a copy here for those of you who were not able to be in Assembly today to also hear what they had to say.
Millie: Kia ora, I’m Millie,
Angus: and I’m Angus and we are your head boy and girl,
Lily: Hi, I’m Lily,
Oscar: And I’m Oscar, and we are your deputies for 2017
Millie: This year we believe we have a lot to offer and feel that, as a group we can help and improve Muritai School in MANY different ways.
Angus: We would like to take a more active part around the school in activities, and spend more time with other pupils.
Oscar: Our group would also like to improve the senior school learning by listening to to all of the students ideas. Some ideas we have at the moment are getting professionals to come and assist our learning.
Lily: We will be spending more time over here in the main school so feel free to say hello and give us your opinions on some fun activities we can do around the school.
Angus: This year our senior school team would like ensure everyone has a great year across the school
Lily: We and the other leadership teams are going to help with some events for the juniors and other syndicates.
Millie: For the 4, 5 and 6’s we would like to organise a few massive games like capture the flag. We are super excited to start spending more time in the different syndicates.
Angus: As a team we would like to try and make a difference at Muritai school.
Oscar: We are going to help in classes and are going to start competitions for the majority of the school to participate in.
Lily: The only reason we wanted our role is to improve your year here at Muritai.
Oscar: This year is all about you. We want to center the attention towards your life at school, whether it’s year 1s or year 8s.
Angus: Feel free to come and talk to any of us when you see us around the school.
Millie: All of us are looking forward to a great year and hope that you are too!
Swimming Sports Celebrations
As well as our own school swimming sports being so successful two weeks ago, yesterday we had our fastest swimmers compete at the Interschool South East Zone swimming competition.
As well as some superb individual accomplishments, Muritai School students came away with three awards - the overall school highest points for participation and finish, and also were voted by all the schools to have:
"Best School Chant" - Muritai
"Fair Play Award" - Muritai
Wow! That really is ‘Being the Best you can Be”

CARING FOR OUR DUNES
This week Room 13 have been learning about the importance of preserving the Eastbourne sand dunes. We learnt the importance of caring for the plants, the different types of plants in our dunes and the importance of co-planting and weeding.
Many thanks to Judith for teaching us this important knowledge. Our next step will be to weed the dunes in preparation for the new plants Mrs Ryan and our class SchoolGen team are cultivating in our school greenhouse.
MONARCH BUTTERFLIES
Most classes have been enjoying watching the Monarch butterfly life cycle close up with swan plants and caterpillars in their classrooms. We have hatched and tagged over 50 butterflies so far and expect to tag at least another two hundred over the next few weeks. We are a part of the national butterfly monitoring programme which tracks numbers of butterflies each season and where they fly. If you sight a tagged butterfly and can get close enough to read its number contact www.mb.org.nz to register it. You will get a reply telling you where it has flown from.

FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS - YEAR 7 AND 8
Young and Cinematic
On Thursday Muritai’s senior school went on a trip to the Capital E Arts festival . As a part of the trip we went to watch 3 shows around Wellington. The second show we watched included: Roxy 5 short films ; which kids around the Wellington region made, and 2 short films ; made by kids in England and Australia.
In the Roxy 5 films you had to include: ‘ yeh nah’, a chocolate fish and a Koru.
Some of the senior school students are entering this competition, this year the film must include:a beanie,a gumboot, and the words ‘Ka Pai’
One of these Roxy 5 films was called ‘A Fishy Tale’. This short film was about a young brother and sister. The brother kept on coming in with chocolate fish and the sister wanted some too. She would ask him “Luca where did you get the chocolate fish?”. Grace, the sister decides she wants to go and find the chocolate fish, Grace, goes and searches in many different ponds for the fish.
We would recommend this short film for 5+ as it is a short but sweet, and simple.
One of the Australian films was called ‘Marble Season’. This was about a bully wanting the best marble in the collection. One day the bully chucked all of Maxie’s marbles over the sandpit and demonstrated some pretty anti social behaviour. Maxie came up with a clever plan to clear Plugger from the sandpit and good won over evil.
We recommend this short film as it has a good message.
We wish our fellow pupils good luck with entering the Roxy 5 short film competition!

Mata And The Mysterious Musical
On Thursday the 23rd of March 2017, the muritai senior school and a few other schools attended the three live shows planned out by Capital E for the National Arts Festival. I particularly enjoyed Mata And The Mysterious Musical which was about a boy who wanted to make music and sing and be famous but the ipad which he used got taken away by his parents. During the night the boy was visited by musical spirits who taught him how to play his instruments amazingly. This was held at Te Papa and was performed by a very talented Jamie Mccaskill. He played two maori instruments and a bass guitar, electric guitar, ukulele and a loop machine. It was really fun and all the audience were fully engaged. At the end he even invited some students up to play. Overall I rate it about a 7/10 and I recommend it for students aged 8 to 11 and above.
SOUTH EAST ZONE SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Our Muritai School swim team represented our school with pride at the South East Zone swimming championships on Thursday. We won the overall school points and also won the best chant and fair play awards. Well done team!

Unfortunately we won’t be sending any of Year 5 or 6 students to the Interzone event due to the Y5/6 camp taking place next week.

On 23rd of March, Muritai school entered 28 students from years 4 to 8 into the South Eastern zones swimming tournament. Pride was shown as Muritai entered Naenae pool. Determination was shown on their faces - they were ready for the challenge! At 10:30 there was a warm up but it was extremely packed with kids from 7 different schools. At 10:45 the briefing for the day began , by 11:00 the first races were under way. Muritai started quickly getting a win in our second race. The freestyle events were very quick with some good placings for Muritai . The breaststroke was good with not many people in each race. Muritai displayed a brilliant talent with good placings.
Muritai showed great enthusiasm in the backstroke races. With some placing in the top 3.
Finally the relays were held. Muritai were in all the freestyle. We got second in all year 4,5,6 and 7 but sadly there were not enough year 8s to participate. The end of the day was great with Muritai winning fair play, best chant _ proudly created by Barney Cass and the Ripper Rugby Team!
We also won the competition 502.5 points.

AFTER SCHOOL CARE CASUAL WORK
We are looking for a mature person with previous childcare experience to cover staff leave during May. There is also the possibility of permanent weekday shifts during term 2 dependant upon enrolment numbers as well as extra work during the April and future holiday programmes. APRIL HOLIDAY PROGRAMME
Some great activities are planned for the next holidays at After School Care with trips to Zealandia, H20 Xtreme and the movies. At school days will include making your own 'Funky Fabric Bookmarks', 'Ninja Eggs', an awesome 'Nebula Jar', some mad science activities and heaps of other fun stuff. TOUCH RUGBY UPDATE
Muritai Minis, Muritai Magic and Muritai Pirates have all been practising hard during the week and shown great improvement on the field with their touch rugby skills they have been learning.All the coaches are very proud of the team work and fair play the players display when on the field. All the teams have had wins with Muritai Minis being unbeatable so far! Good luck for the last 2 games touch teams!
MURITAI SCHOOL BOOK FAIR
The Muritai School Library will be holding a Scholastic Book Fair in Week 10 of Term 1, 2017. The school receives 30% of every book sale, making this a good fundraiser. Last year, at the fair we sold over $3200 worth of book stock, giving the school $974 worth of books for our library.
The timing of the Book Fair is set around the parent teacher conferences being held on the Wednesday 5th April 3-6.30pm and Thursday 6th April 3-6.30pm.
We are asking for some help to run the book fair, one hour of time would help immensely.
If you can help could you leave your name with Jo or Carole in the office. The dates are:

ICAS AND GREAT KIWI COMPETITION EXAMS
ICAS exam registration needs to be returned to the office by Wednesday 29 March. Unfortunately we cannot take late entries.
Great Kiwi Competition registration needs to be returned by Thursday 13 April.

Yoga offers children a form of movement that can be athletic or gentle and non-competitive. It builds strength of body and mind, balance and flexibility. It teaches mindfulness in stillness ( I always include some quiet meditation in class) and mindfulness in action. The yoga teachings include principles of compassion for self and others, discipline and self-study. Kids' yoga classes are playful, imaginative and age-appropriate weaving games, song and story in the practice of the poses.
